Yukon barely held onto its lead in the medal standings after Day 5 of the Arctic Winter Games in Wood Buffalo, Alta.

In archery, Emmet Kapaniuk again edged out Hayden Wallace in the second round of the Individual Compound 2004 Male competition, 564-549.
Juliette Greetham and Pheonix Widney again finished third and fifth, respectively, in the Individual Barebow 2004 Female competition.
Mitchell Rudolph failed to duplicate his round one first-place finish in the Barebow 2004 Male competition, coming in second in Round 2. Harrison Dolding came in third again.
Delia Therriault slipped to fourth in the second round of the Individual Compound 2004 Female competition. Riley Cyre came in sixth.
In Arctic Sports, Kate Koepke struck silver in the Alaskan High Kick Junior Female competition. Augustine Greetham also won a silver in the junior male kneel jump.
According to a Team Yukon press release, after a long day of hand games, the Dene Games team was feeling tired during the finger pull. Despite that, they still had top 10 finishes and received lots of compliments on their clean technique.
In Badminton, Winnie Zhang is playing in the 2006 Female medal round today against Methma De Silva of Alberta North for bronze after dropping a 2-0 decision to Anna Arleth of Greenland.
In 2003 Female doubles matches, Yukon dropped a 2-0 decision to Greenland and will now face Alberta North for the bronze today.
Yukon continued the pattern of battling for bronze with a semifinal loss to Alberta North in 2003 Male Doubles and will face Alaska for bronze today.
In curling, the Yukon boys lost 6-3 to Alaska but went home with bronze ulus.
In junior girls’ futsal, Yukon beat Nunavut 3-0, with Juno Hanatani, Madeleine Smith and Ella Lawrence netting singles.
They lost to Alberta North 4-0 in the semifinals today and play Sápm tonight at 6 p.m. for the bronze.
In Junior boy’s futsal, Yukon dominated Nunavut 9-0. Chris McCarron led the way with a hat trick. Cameron Birngsli contributed a brace (two goals) and Maze Clemente, Ferguson Israel, Leo Whittaker and Cy McDowell chipped in with singles. Yukon played Sápmi in the semifinals today at 1 p.m.
Yukon’s juvenile boys tied Alaska 2-2. John Chisholm and Noah Lapierre scored for Yukon.
The Yukon boys then lost 4-2 to N.W.T. in the semifinals and will now play Alaska for bronze this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
The juvenile girls came up with a big win against Alberta North, 3-1, in the semifinals. Camille Cashaback St-Laurent led the way with a brace. Super-scorer Mirai Traynor netted the other goal for the Yukon. They now play N.W.T. for the gold tomorrow at 9 a.m.
The girls’ volleyball team lost an epic battle to Greenland 3-1, with the last game coming down to a 25-23 decision for Greenland. Their hard-fought competition is now done.
The boys’ volleyball team dropped their final round robin game to Alberta North 2-0. They rallied in the semifinals against the N.W.T. 3-0 to punch their ticket to the gold ulu game. They lost to Alberta North 3-0 this morning and setttled for silver.
The girls’ basketball team played with tenacity but couldn’t get past a tough N.W.T. side, losing 71-53. Arian Batallones led the girls with a stellar 20 point effort. They tip off against N.W.T. in the semis at 2 p.m. today.
The boys’ basketball team came out on the wrong end of a N.W.T. three-point shot with two seconds remaining to fall 64-61 in a nail-biter. The boys have a rematch with N.W.T. in the semifinals today at 2 p.m..
According to the Team Yukon press release, the boys’ U16 hockey team ceded the game-winning-goal with 40 seconds left in regulation to fall to the N.W.T. 2-1. Kaelan Basnett scored the Yukon’s lone goal. They will play Nunavut for bronze on Saturday at 8 a.m.
The girls’ hockey team notched two quick goals on the N.W.T. to go up 3-2 in a semifinal yesterday. The lead was short-lived as the N.W.T. evened the game a minute later. The N.W.T scored the game-winner with three minutes to go. Emery Twardochleb and Jordan Macdonald scored the two quick goals for the Yukon. Zoe Leas notched the other goal in the second period.
The girls dominated Alaska 11-2 to take the bronze medal this morning. Zoe Leas and Callie Quaile led the way with two goals each.
All six table tennis athletes were in singles action. Melodie Qui made it to the junior female quarter-finals today, as did junior male Misa Svoboda.
In figure skating, the athletes performed their routines into Thursday evening. Results were still pending at press time.
Yukon wrestlers had an outstanding day on the mats. Liam Gishler, Kaleb Parry, Gabriel Racine, and Jaymi and Leah Hinchey captured gold ulus in their weight classes. Leah McLean and Harlan Keefer struck silver.
Speed skater Kieran Horton won his second gold ulu of the games in the juvenile 500 metre race. Lisa Freeman earned silver in her junior female 777 metre race.
Cold weather put the biathlon competition on ice until today.
The medal standings have tightened up considerably. Yukon is still in first with 85 medals (31 gold, 28 silver and 26 bronze). Alaska is only two medals behind in second with 83 ulus (28 gold, 26 silver and 29 bronze). Alberta North is in third with 61 medals (15 gold, 27 silver and 19 bronze).
