Rev. Dr. Donald Gwynn Lewis
1927 - 2022
Don passed peacefully in his 95th year, October 28, 2022, in Red Deer, Alberta. He was born to Bill and Ina Lewis who farmed near Claresholm, Alberta.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years Isobel Lewis (Campbell), brother Wayne, and special companion Mildred Hoppins. He is lovingly remembered by daughter Joanne; sons Jim (Hazel), and Glen (Beth); grandchildren Vic, Colin, Misha and Stephane; extended family; and friends.
The land and creation were at the heart of his life view and theology. Dad's creative spirit was evident in his writing and art. Ordained a United Church Minister in 1963, he received his honourary Doctor of Divinity from St. Stephen's College (University of Alberta) in 1979. With Isobel, he ministered for 22 years at Whitehorse United Church; and several years in Alberta communities. Serving people and community were central to Dad's life. In Whitehorse, he directed Braeburn Christian Camp; and was a friend to AA. In both Whitehorse and Red Deer, he was a Rotarian and a Canadian Legion Chaplain.
The Lewis family thank the Hamlets at Red Deer staff for their care and compassion. Dad, we thank you for the gifts of life and love.
A Celebration of Life will be held and livestreamed on Facebook from Whitehorse United Church, November 24, 2:00 PM. In Red Deer, a service will be held and livestreamed from Sunnybrook United Church, November 19, 2:00 PM. Donations in Don’s memory would be welcomed by a charity of your choice or Whitehorse United Church. Condolences may be left for the family at http://www.eventidefuneralchapels.com
