While Internet services were restored throughout the territory and across the North by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Northwestel Inc. spokeswoman Anne Kennedy says some customers still experiencing problems may have to reset their modems to get back on-line.
'Some customers may find no connection,' she said in an interview this morning.
Internet services failed across the Yukon yesterday due to a problem with a router in Edmonton.
Staff at Bell Canada (which provides Internet services to Northwestel, which serves the Yukon) had to manually reset a fibre cable switch before service was restored.
The situation also saw some credit card and debit services available only off-and-on throughout the day.
Yukoners were back on-line sporadically throughout Wednesday afternoon until the system was again stable in the early evening.
During the day, Northwestel had 1,100 calls to its repair branch. Of those, the 10 staff members spoke with about 600 people, Kennedy said.
Updates of the situation were also provided through voicemail when customers phoned in.
Kennedy was expecting fewer calls today, but still anticipated some as customers may have issues with their modems.
It's recommended users try restarting their modems first. Instructions on how to do that are provided on page 23 of the current Northwestel phone book, as well as the Northwestel website at www.nwtel.ca.
If customers still can't access the Internet after restarting their modem, they can contact Northwestel repair by dialing 611.
The cause of the router's problem remains a mystery for the time being, but manufacturer Nortel is looking at it.
'They are investigating,' Kennedy said.
