LONE SOLDIER – Dr. Brendan Hanley, seen during a March 10 news conference, handled Wednesday’s COVID-19 briefing alone due to the cabinet ministers being involved in the territorial election campaign.
Dr. Brendan Hanley returned from a week off on Wednesday with his weekly COVID-19 briefing.
Dr. Brendan Hanley returned from a week off on Wednesday with his weekly COVID-19 briefing.
Hanley was flying solo during this news conference due to the ongoing territorial election campaign.
As there continue to be no new COVID-19 cases, Hanley talked up the continuing need for vaccines.
He also touched on a troubling trend showing younger people aren’t lining up for their vaccines with the same enthusiasm as their older cohorts.
Hanley said he would have figures available for next week on the topic, shedding a better light on the phenomenon.
He noted “older people” – though he didn’t quantify the age range – have been much better at getting their inoculations.
Vaccine hesitancy continues to be a bit of a concern as well, Hanley said. Education efforts will continue to work at reducing that, he added.
Hanley was dismissive of recent news reports and studies indicating that anyone who had contracted COVID-19 in the past year might have a much stronger and more debilitating reaction to the initial dose of the Moderna virus being used in the Yukon.
On Tuesday, the National Post published a lengthy news story documenting the phenomenon. It quoted various studies that suggest anyone with an abnormally strong reaction to either the Moderna shot or the Pfizer version is almost certain to have had COVID.
Last week, Yahoo News ran a very similar story with the same facts.
“With over 40 million Americans now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, it’s no secret that the shots can lead to unpleasant side effects such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue,” the Yahoo story read.
“But while initial research suggested that individuals were more likely to experience these symptoms after the second dose, experts now say that those who previously had COVID-19 — whether knowingly or not — may end up reacting more strongly to the first dose,” the Yahoo story read.
“One study released in early February from Bar-Ilan University in Israel found that the immune response created after the first dose of vaccine in those who previously had COVID-19 was ‘so effective’ that it ‘opens the debate as to whether one dose of the vaccine may suffice.’
“Another study published in the Lancet found a 140-fold increase in antibodies after the first vaccine among those who had previously had a COVID-19 infection versus those who hadn't.”
The National Post story stated “Several recent small studies suggest that a single dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna shots can launch a rapid immune response in people previously infected with the pandemic virus.
“The response is so strong, people with a known history of COVID are reporting vaccine side effects — fever, headache, chills and muscle and joint pain — more frequently than the never infected after the first dose. Normally, the second dose tends to be more prone to side effects.
“‘Somebody who has had COVID before seems to respond very quickly to a dose of vaccine,’ said Dr. Caroline Quach-Thanh, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the University of Montreal and co-chair of Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization, or NACI.”
On Wednesday, Hanley didn’t give much indication that he was familiar with the literature.
He suggested the strong after-effects experienced by those previously infected by the virus were “too unpredictable” to be of much use, and didn’t reach the stage of issuing an advisory.
Hanley also downplayed the notion such reactions could be used to increase the knowledge of how extensively the COVID-19 virus had spread in the Yukon and around the world.
Similar effects are being found in people who weren’t aware they had COVID, or who had never been officially diagnosed.
Hanley said he doubted there had been many undetected cases in the territory that could be tracked by people experiencing the over-the-top reactions.
“I don’t think we have had significantly more exposures undetected,” he said.
In response to reporters’ questions, Hanley also said there is no definitive answer as to when so-called “herd immunity” will be reached.
“There’s no definitive number,” he said. “We may never have one.”
No loosening of the health restrictions are yet in the offing, Hanley said.
He declined to speculate on a date when that might happen in favour of simply saying “soon.”
Hanley said he is still worried about the variants on the original COVID virus and their potential to cause problems.
The Brazilian variant is poised to become the dominant strain in Canada, he said. Fortunately, the existing vaccines will handle that particular variant, he said.
The variants are significantly more contagious than the original version, and potentially more lethal, although that hasn’t been established firmly as yet.
As of Tuesday, the COVID-19 case count for Yukon was 72. Seventy-one people have recovered, one person died in Watson Lake in late 2020, and there are no active cases.
From March 17 to the past Tuesday, there were 43 people tested at the COVID-19 Testing and Assessment Centre.
Monday marked the one-year anniversary of Yukon’s first two COVID-19 cases.
Vaccination rollout progress:
As of Monday, there were 33,443 doses of the Moderna vaccine administered in Yukon.
This number includes 22,795 first doses and 10,648 second doses.
By region, the percentage of residents who have received a first dose is: 69 per cent in north Yukon; 78 per cent in west Yukon; 52 per cent in central Yukon; 56 per cent in southeast Yukon; and 65 per cent in Whitehorse.
By region, the percentage of residents who have received a second dose is: 60 per cent in north Yukon; 69 per cent in West Yukon; 41 per cent in Central Yukon; 47 per cent in Southeast Yukon; 24 per cent in Whitehorse.
Enforcement statistics, as of Tuesday:
• The government has received 1,610 complaints;
• Failure to self-isolate: 909;
• Gatherings over 10 inside or 50 outside: 40;
• Failure to transit through the Yukon in 24 hours or stay on their designated route: 444;
• Businesses failing to comply with orders: 14;
• Failure to abide by declaration form: 35;
• Failure to wear a mask: 128; and
• Failure to physically distance: 40.
There have been no new charges since March 16.
There has been a total of 58 charges and 47 people charged under the Civil Emergency Measures Act.
The number of total incoming travellers was 74,533, including 20,033 resident travellers, 16,014 B.C. residents and 511 N.W.T. residents.

I know I'm not infected with Covid. I want to know if I'm immune to Covid. Canadian company LifeLabs www.lifelabs.com developed an internationally recognized antibody test for Covid immunity. Millions of tests have been done. However the CMO will not permit this test for Yukoners. Why isn't the Covid immunity test available here?

Best you can hope for is a couple folks with Grade 10. Most unable to hold down a job and spend their days chirping on the internet about things they can't even comprehend.
You can find them in the mornings at Tim Hortons or at the YP convention.

Tried to get ivermectin ordered from a local clinic but the guy said he can't give a prescription unless the government approves it. We are living in a medical tyranny but you can always order from India. Vitamin D, Zinc, Quercetin, Selenium and Ivermectin if you get sick. Clinically proven to help at all stages of the disease so why bother with an experimental mrna shot?

It doesn’t take a medical degree to think that getting injected with a concoction that was never approved by anyone with a medical degree (FDA) to seem utterly stupid. I’ll sit back and watch the willing lab rats line up to get injected with something they can’t even guarantee will even work.

I would not normally be bothered responding to folks whose arguments are on such shaky foundations that they feel compelled to resort to childish name calling and insults. However, to the person who wrote that the vaccines have "never been tested on humans" that is simply not accurate.

@Anie..please enlighten me. How can taking the vaccine save the life of someone else? The vaccine is to protect yourself but you can still carry the virus and infect others. I see the vaccine recipients as those who are afraid of the virus (sheople)or those who are legitimately compromised and should take the vaccine to protect themselves, that makes sense. Those of us who prefer to build natural immunity and combat virus through homegrown antibodies should be commended for our efforts. In the long run we will save lives. So please tell me how take the vaccine can save someone else’s life.

I'm on Nicky B's side. People like Anie who think they are "saving the life of someone else" by injecting an experimental mrna vaccine that has never been tested on humans can go and do just that.
It's nice to see that some people still have critical thinking skills like Nicky. But you will always have sheep and puppets like Anie who have no critical thinking skills whatsoever and will obey and consume everything that comes from MSM, government and these so called top doctors LMAO.
Anie I will take my chances with catching convid 1984 and whatever other BS variants that come along with it and fight it with my own immune system. This experiment is going to do way more harm than good. I promise.

When are they going to quit calling it a "vaccine", and call it what it really is....experimental gene therapy. There is no amount of the pathogen in this shot, therefore it is NOT a vaccine. Top Docs have already admitted it is designed to boost your immune system. Hence, experimental gene therapy.

@DL is right. Those who don’t have the best immunity can boost it with vitamins D3 & C, some exercise outside in the sun and fresh air without a mask, and healthy eating.
If the position of CMO was filled by experienced doctors practicing medicine instead of paid political shills, then they would be advising people to boost their immune systems instead of fearmongering and urging them to inject untested drugs into their bodies.
We have been lied to by politicians continually moving the goal-posts to keep their "emergency" going and retain authoritarian control of our lives.
This must stop; make your vote count for change.

I'm impressed. The Yukon appears to have more medical experts per capita than any place else in Canada. Just look at how many are sharing their expertise here. The Yukon received more vaccine per capita than any other place in Canada - somebody should have told Ottawa to give it to Canadians who really want it.

A medical doctor worthy of this title would advocate proven ways to boost one's immune system: good nutrition, Vitamin D, daily walks in fresh air & sunshine, plenty of rest, positive outlook and kindness. It really works.

Many folks won't take this experimental vaccine that hasn't been tried for long-term risks. I'm way more concerned about this vaccine than of covid, which has a low fatality rate, and can be prevented with proven & cheap therapeutics that the mainstream media never talks about, thanks to big pharma's censorship.
Reporters should be asking Hanley about these therapeutics for covid. These are effective, widely available, cheap treatments like Vitamin D and Ivermectin. Look up the site named "Frontline Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance", organized by USA doctors, for lists of medical studies and protocols for successfully treating covid.

'The variants are significantly more contagious than the original version, and potentially more lethal, although that hasn’t been established firmly as yet.'
Why is Hanley running his mouth like this? If it hasn't been firmly established, why is it being promoted as SIGNIFICANTLY? Just another fear tactic?
To what end? We know that Trudeau wants to put everyone on a "basic income", eliminate SA, OAS, later CPP, to fund that program. Is keeping us locked down, so that nearly everyone has to be on some kind of assistance part of that plan? Hanley, talks like a Liberal, acts like a Liberal. hmmm. In the face of reports that Hanley doesn't appear to be reading... why are we still on lockdown? This is just one of, I am sure, many, many conspiracy theories. Anyone care to put another conspiracy theory up?

Wrong statistic. The relevant statistic should be the "percentage of residents 18 and older" since the Moderna vaccine is not approved for <18.
“There’s no definitive number,” he said. “We may never have one.”
A full year after the initial restrictions/lockdowns were imposed, we have the vaccine, fully half the population has been vaccinated, and Hanley is essentially telling us this "emergency" may last forever.

The Wuhan Flu started in September 2019. That's accepted literature. You can even say October 2019. I know more than a few people who went to hospital in December with severe flu like symptoms (Maybe the Yukon Hospital foundation could check the admittance levels to WGH to track if there was an increase between October 2019 and March 2020? that was extraordinary?)
These "health officials" are happy touting the same information from day 1 and speaking to the same talking points that are RELEASED to them. Hanley isn't researching outside of the information that is fed to him from the fed. The argument is that "other" information isn't vetted and the information he receives is "official."
Until people start "thinking" again and doing their research from sound sources, we'll live in a world where one group receives information from meme's and facebooks links, while the other doesn't research because it comes from a "vetted federal source"
Pathetic is an understatement,

There are a lot of Yukoners like me who DO NOT intend to get the so-called 'vaccine'. I have a healthy immune system that makes me IMMUNE to Covid, and the "vaccine" does not. Besides, numerous medical science studies and epidemiological evidence shows that 85% of the healthy population is naturally immune to Covid.
People not wanting the vaccine? Maybe it has to do with these facts:
- It’s not even a vaccine under the CDC own definition. It’s gene therapy.
- It does not provide immunity and does not stop you from getting or spreading it. It just lessens the effects of Covid up to 50%.
- This type of “vaccine” has never been used before so no one knows what the long term effects are.
- It alters the function of your DNA which makes you produce the spike protein.
- None are FDA approved. Only authorized.
- A fun fact about Moderna- they have never successfully developed any product for treatment for any disease.
Why would a young person who has a 99.7% survival rate take an experimental vaccine that will only lessen the effects of Covid?

As a fully vaccinated citizen, the government no longer has a legal justification to restrict my movements or contacts. Vaccination returns us to a normal and acceptable level of risk. The vaccine is available to those that want it and those that don’t have made their choice.
Wearing a mask in public is no big loss and I’ll probably keep that habit through flu seasons. However, the automatic two-week solitary confinement required after travel is no longer justifiable for fully vaccinated citizens. Locals and tourists both.
All that being said, the reaction to the vaccine was fairly standard and on par with my previous experience with travel vaccines for things like Yellow Fever. Have a feeling a lot of the hype is from folks who hype as a habit.

It's nice to see a journalist in Yukon asking real questions and challenging people in government. I think Hanley has been nicely moderate but also way behind the news and developments outside Yukon, evidenced by how long it took him to start advocating masks.
I'm in a younger demographic and haven't taken the vaccine. I don't doubt its efficacy and safety. But I also don't fear COVID, and I like having ownership over my body and what goes into it.
