Yukoners laud Biden’s move to protect the ANWR

Yukon MP Larry Bagnell and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation are hailing the new Biden administration’s move to prohibit oil and natural gas leasing activities in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

“I want to first congratulate President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris who took office yesterday,” Bagnell said Thursday.

“The actions they have already taken show Canada and the world that the United States will once again join us in leading the fight against climate change.

“I would also like to applaud President Biden for taking swift action to prevent drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

“One of the actions on his first day in the Oval Office was to use an executive order to place a temporary moratorium on all oil and natural gas leasing activities in ANWR. This mark a substantial shift in policy that I hope will lead to long-term protection.”

The Canadian government, Bagnell added, “continues to fight to ensure the protection of ANWR, the jointly shared Porcupine caribou herd, and the Gwich’in way of life.

“Last night, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also stated his support for the move.

“Although there are significant steps still to take, after decades of lobbying, this is the first time I see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Bagnell added.

The Vuntut Gwitchin government is also celebrating Biden’s action.

“The president’s support honours the Gwich’in way of life and his swift action sends a clear message that the voices of the elders of our nation, and the lives of the children and grandchildren of our nation, matter,” Chief Dana Tizya-Tramm of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation said Wednesday from Old Crow.

“On behalf of our nation, Hai choo’ to President Biden and Vice-President Harris for making this a priority.

“There is still a lot of work ahead, and we will not stop until our sacred lands are permanently protected, but today we are taking a moment to breathe a sigh of relief.”

Elder Lorraine Netro, a former Yukon NDP MLA, said she is “feeling so very relieved and elated on the news that President Biden is taking action to protect Iizhik Gwats’an Gwandaii Goodlit.

“Today, I am remembering our ancestors, all of our partners, and those who never gave up,” Netro said.

“This moment belongs to all of us, and I know we will all be taking some time to celebrate today and to reflect on the journey which has led us here.”

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management on Tuesday said it has issued leases covering nearly 685 square miles (1,770 square kilometres) in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The move was denounced by critics in the waning hours of former president Donald Trump’s administration.

Disappointing to see people support Trump up here. Say all you want about how he did in America, last I checked, I'm Canadian, and he hasn't done much for us besides tax our exports and destroy NAFTA. If you like how Trump ran things, Alaska is right next door and I'm sure they'd love to have you.

@Matthew It's not just "The left" that's euphoric about getting rid of Trump, it's all decent people period. Even Currie Dixon (local conservative leader) was on the radio the other day talking about how great it is that Biden is now President and how damaging Trump and his band of crazy right wingers were to the US overall.

Oil and Gas is on its way out--? on Jan 22, 2021 at 4:51 pm

Yet here we are at record consumption. The world is more plastic than ever. And we're doing more and more to use more oil. We may not burn it in engines as much (we actually burn more than ever), but it will always be in production.

Patti Eyre: You're right, Canada is a different country today. And Canada is no longer first. And by the way, I fought for my country many years ago. What did you do? And I personally don't know any wealthy neighbours.

Nathan: Actually it's President by theft Biden. Obama is the real President. His command centre is only 2 blocks from the WH. Since my retirement, I am able to keep up with what's really going on. And believe me, its not for optimism. When there comes the need for 25,000 military troops and a razor wire fence to protect those at a presidential inauguration, you know it's not to protect the truth. Someday, those that read this will remember that I said, that January 20, 2021 was the beginning of the "Fall of the American Empire". Canada fell, October 19, 2015.

JC it’s a different country, how about you put Canada first instead of your wealthy American neighbours!

Good stuff and hopefully it is completely protected. O&G is slowly on its way out, you can read in between the lines when you see O&G invest in the renewable energy sector. They know it's coming and they are adapting.

High paying jobs in Canada for ANWR, that is truly delusional as believing the national debt fairy tale. The modern monetary theory is new ground and has yet to be travelled. There is no credit limit with MMT, money is an afterthought and inflation doesn't fit into the model but is a side note. FIAT currency is where it's at and stop dreaming of the gold standard.

Gwichin way of life? on Jan 21, 2021 at 8:09 pm

You realize we're all in a capitalist western society? There is no more "culture." We're just finding new ways to create jobs and milk money from the fed. Everywhere I look I just see western. Even buses are wrapped in "modern" vinyl with images that are created via computer. Just because something has a native logo on it doesn't mean it is at all traditional. I'm sick of pretending that my culture is still alive here.

Oh, and LB, when you're talking to your boss in Ottawa, ask him how he enjoyed his vacation on the beaches of Barbados over the Xmas and New Year holidays, while the rest of were told to stay home.

LB, I'm a Yukoner, and I'm not lauding this. And neither is a lot of my friends. So, don't make it sound like all Yukoners are doing a happy dance over this. Many thousands of high paying jobs are going to be lost to so call protect a few Cariboo. My only joy in all this is that your children, to the at least, 10th generation are going to have to pay off the trillion plus dollar debt and almost half a trillion dollar deficit. Cause I won't be around to help. Would love to hear you explain that to them.

Biden is so delusional, listen to him talk.. I'm shocked he is actually the president, and people actually voted for him. You can already see the hatred the left has towards everyone. I bet the media won't have a single bad article about Biden, just how they didn't have a single good article about Trump.. funny isn't it.

Yeah, great... Biden also cancelled Keystone XL pipeline.
If you think US was divided under Trump, just wait a few months once the lefty euphoria subsides and real life creeps back in.
