Yukoner recovering from virus outside of the territory: doctor

A Yukon resident currently outside of the territory has tested positive for COVID-19.

By Whitehorse Star on July 24, 2020

A Yukon resident currently outside of the territory has tested positive for COVID-19.

The new case has been confirmed by Dr. Brendan Hanley, the territory’s chief medical officer of health, the Yukon government said today.

The individual, whose name and location are not being publicly specified, acquired the disease and was tested outside the territory.

This brings Yukon’s total case count to 14, three of whom contracted the disease and were diagnosed outside of the Yukon. These cases were all diagnosed after July 1.

Yukon Communicable Disease Control is working closely with the provincial health authority to ensure the individual is receiving the appropriate care and to co-ordinate contact tracing.

“This person began experiencing symptoms while out of the territory, was tested and is now recovering in self-isolation,” Hanley said.

“They will not return to Yukon until they are no longer infectious.

“This is a good reminder that we must all continue to take the same precautions when travelling that we would take at home. The Safe Six becomes even more important.”

Provinces and territories work closely to co-ordinate care for patients who are not in their home jurisdictions so patients receive the care they need and the public is protected.

All provinces and territories have an agreement to report on the case count based on permanent residency.

The Safe Six include proper hand hygiene, physical distancing, small gatherings, staying home when sick and being respectful when travelling.

Man there are nosey Nellie/Nelsons reporting folks on here and why the concern adding 3 cases to 11 when the folks are from here....you'll no doubt retract objection where the higher number affords some benefit in misery.
If folks could stop fighting any approach to the pandemic and just be mindful of the humans involved I think humaity would be well served

AXA. I think most if not all BC visitors are from Atlin. They need to shop in Whitehorse. So, they should be included in our population.

@AXM
That’s because there's enough of Yukon population with independent water sources which has allowed our bodies to develop stronger natural antibodies that give us a higher level or immunity to serious infection.
Versus the mass population where these outbreaks are occurring who survive off treated water.

To all those misinformed people on this discussion thread complaining about this and the other two cases being counted as 'Yukon' cases, you may want to read the following articles.

It is well-documented that some people infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus which causes the disease known as COVID-19) are experiencing cases of re-occurrence where they either become re-infected with the virus (and in some cases, the disease), or the virus has remained dormant and re-emerges and they once again test positive for the virus.

THIS is why the last 3 cases have been counted as 'Yukon' cases - because it is to be expected that once these people clear quarantine, they will RETURN to the Yukon and live here. If they relapse (as some have been known to do), they will (once again) be counted among Yukon cases.

Stop getting your 'information' from Internet memes and through word-of-mouth and start reading peer-reviewed Scientific journals. Only then will you be informed of what is happening during this global Pandemic.

Everyday we hear of new cases in B.C. and yet our border is OPEN to them !? Why are we letting B.C. residents into the Yukon ???

I found it interesting when you call the COVID hotline they out sourced it to British Columbia. When I called about people camping (hiding) down in Miles Canyon they asked me if that was near Dawson City. I assumed there are enough people in the Yukon that can do this service. I did not bother after that. If we all follow the safe 6, that is your best option.

Blah, blah, blah is what all this amounts to when you have bleach bottle motor homes parked and shopping at Walmart from epic centers of corona virus in the lower 48 clearly breaking their mandated and agreed to rules when they crossed the border.
Enforce or let someone else handle the reality of this situation because ignoring it like you two want to do is obviously not an acceptable solution. They were parked and attempted to be reported on afternoon of Jul 22 2020. This brings up another problem; try phoning in a plate number and see if you can get anyone to care about it.
Mass Ostrich like behavior here as everyone wants a pay check but like having heads beneath sand. Who will accept info and what will they do about it? Please wake-up bureaucracy !

If the diagnoses were made outside of territory, then it should not count as a Yukon number, it becomes very misleading.

As this was not IN the Territory. No community spread involved. Why are you inflating the numbers of cases that are actually in the Territory. I have a friend who moved to Arizona some 25 years ago. But lived here a short while. If she contracts the virus, going to count her as a Yukon stat?

Dr. Brennan, the Yukon has 11 cases of Covid19, not 14. The 3 that were outside the Yukon do not count. I repeat, do not count. So, let's keep the count right.

So, the Yukoner was exposed outside the territory and was tested outside the territory and is self-isolating outside the territory. When this person returns to the Yukon, they will be covid-free.

Why are we counting this case in Yukon's statistics? Gotta keep the scare meme going?
