Yukoner celebrates $1-million lottery win

Yukoner Johnathan Kolot had what Western Canada Lottery Corp. officials call a completely acceptable reaction to winning $1 million in the Dec. 10, 2022 LOTTO 6/49 draw.

By Whitehorse Star on December 14, 2023

Yukoner Johnathan Kolot had what Western Canada Lottery Corp. officials call a completely acceptable reaction to winning $1 million in the Dec. 10, 2022 LOTTO 6/49 draw.

He had no reaction at all.

“I checked my numbers on Western Canada Lottery Corporation’s website just after the draw,” Kolot said Wednesday.

“I saw what I had won and was unbelievably calm. Shockingly calm.”

The winner only claimed his prize in October.

He said he decided to wait to claim it so he could get his affairs in order before officially becoming a millionaire.

Kolot said he hasn’t made any plans for his windfall yet. He said he plans to take some time deciding what to do with his winnings.

“It’s fantastic,” he said. “A complete miracle, and such a huge relief!”

Kolot bought his winning LOTTO 6/49 ticket from the Save on Foods store in Whitehorse. He is the first Yukoner to take home a million-dollar prize this year.

Hey Moose, since Covid, almost every lottery winner has been wearing a mask, Have a look around on the old internet. Who cares if he's wearing a mask, mind your own business! If I won I'd wear a mask too if they let me. Too many lowlifes in this town now.

The timing of the moderation in this Comment section seemed to be about the same time or very shortly after Jackies death... If this is the "New Normal" let it RIP along with Jackie.

I’m back just check the lottery site on winning big in Canada a photo is mandatory.

If you go to the Lottery Canada website it specifically says winners are “NOT “allowed to wear a mask at the much-publicized photo shoot.

@ Annie

Likely hired someone from CBC - ever seen how ruthless CBC is at rejecting posts ? I cancelled my subscription to the paper when I saw what was going on - and told them why. Sad...

Charlie's Aunt, I agree with you. My guess is that, at some point, the Star decided to moderate comments, but I seem to have missed that announcement. I think I also missed the article where they set out criteria, so that we could know what is acceptable. I sure would appreciate that information.

@ YT, I agree with your comment on the moderating. I notice many regulars are no longer posted so possibly their messages have received same fate as some of mine. I do not believe I have been rude or offensive but several of my messages have gone unpublished. I have always enjoyed this blog, whether I agreed with poster or not. To me, it used to be one of the best parts of the on-line paper.

@Moose101 he doesn't want you knowing who he is and asking him for money.

@Moose101 it's so people like you don't stop him in the street and ask him stupid questions, like "can you spare some change?"

He's also smart for not claiming right away... He's probably going to make this last. Many people who win the lottery do the complete opposite.

Seriously Whitehorse Star?
I’m sure you received lots of positive comments on this story (mine included) and this one from Moose is the one you chose to publish?
I guess you can do what you want, but Jesus Christ, your new comment moderation practices are inconsistent at best.
I’m a long time Star supporter and always buy copy but as of late, I’ve been reconsidering this.
