Yukon MLAs have stayed put, parties say

With politicians and government staff members under fire all over Canada for ignoring health provisions pleading against non-essential travel, it appears as if the Yukon has avoided the imbroglio so far.

With politicians and government staff members under fire all over Canada for ignoring health provisions pleading against non-essential travel, it appears as if the Yukon has avoided the imbroglio so far.

All three parties – the governing Liberals, the official Opposition Yukon Party and the – NDP were asked by the Star this week if any of their members have travelled outside the Yukon or Canada recently.

“I can speak to the Yukon Liberal MLAs and confirm that none of them have left the country since the pandemic hit,” senior communications advisor Matthew Cameron said.

“Premier Silver travelled to B.C. when the bubble was open. Ministers (Tracy-Anne) McPhee, (Pauline) Frost, (Richard) Mostyn and (Jeanie) McLean each travelled to B.C. when the bubble was open, but otherwise our team has been in the territory.”

The Yukon Party relayed similar information by email via Tim Kucharek, its communications specialist.

“No Yukon Party MLAs or staff have left the territory in recent weeks,” he said.

“MLA Patti McLeod went to Victoria, British Columbia from November 5th to the 9th to be with an immediate relative who was terminally ill.

“The BC Bubble was still open at this time. MLA McLeod followed all public health guidance and rules during her time in the province, and upon her return.”

Francois Picard, the NDP’s chief of staff, had a good chuckle over the question.

“Well, since I’m the only staff and Liz (Hanson) and Kate (White) have spent the holidays here, I’m positive we have not,” he wrote in an email to the Star.

Late last month, then-Ontario finance minister Rod Philips resigned after his vacation in the Caribbean became publicly known.

On Monday, Alberta’s then-minister of Municipal Affairs, Tracy Allard, resigned after a family trip to Hawaii.

Premier Jason Kenney’s chief of staff, Jamie Huckabay, was asked to resign following a trip outside the country.

On the federal front, NDP MP Niki Ashton was stripped of her cabinet critic positions following a trip to Greece to visit an ailing family member.

Trying to stir up trouble Wilf? Currie is around town every day. Why are you concerned with him anyway? He isn't even elected. Be more concerned about the government and their border-crossing visitors and significant others who they should have to isolate with.

Following Trudeau's $600 million buy off of Canadian media, it's becoming more difficult to know who is in the Liberal pocket and who is reporting unvarnished truth.

Fact: so many politicians breaking the 'rules' show they themselves know that covid is NOT a significant threat to their health or families'. Ask yourself why that is. They're the ones who are provided with first-hand information about covid, in order to devise policies.

Can the Liberal party please tell us where the DM of Tourism went? I'm pretty sure it wasn't BC.

Interesting that the vast majority across the country who got caught traveling during the pandemic were conservatives.
Better double check our local conservatives aka "Yukon Party"!

Oh nothing to see here, just the usual "Rules for the classes, and rules for the masses" pretty much democracy summed up.
