THINGS LOOKING WELL – ‘Yukon is in a good place right now,’ Dr. Brendan Hanley, the territory’s chief medical officer of health, said in a statement released last Friday afternoon.
A surprise decision to loosen some of the territory’s COVID-19 health restrictions has caught people by surprise.
A surprise decision to loosen some of the territory’s COVID-19 health restrictions has caught people by surprise.
The date for revising group gathering sizes was announced early last Friday afternoon.
A possible increase in gathering sizes and social bubbles had been announced the previous Wednesday during the weekly COVID-19 briefing with Premier Sandy Silver and the chief medical officer of health, Dr. Brendan Hanley.
Under the new rules,
• bars and restaurants will be able to return to full capacity for table service;
• social bubbles can increase to 20 individuals;
• social gathering sizes can increase with physical distancing;
• indoor gatherings can be up to 20 individuals with mask use;
• outdoor gatherings can be up to 100 individuals;
• organized indoor and outdoor gatherings and events can expand to 200 individuals with physical distancing provided the venue or space can accommodate that ;
• funerals, weddings and faith-based services can increase to 200 individuals with physical distancing provided the venue or space can accommodate that;
• gyms and recreation centres can expand to 200 individuals with physical distancing provided the venue or space can accommodate that; and
• camps and recreational programs can increase to 20 individuals indoors with physical distancing and mask use and 100 individuals outdoors with physical distancing.
The changes coincide with today’s relaxation of rules for fully-vaccinated Canadian travellers entering the territory.
“These individuals will need to sign a declaration that they have been fully vaccinated and will also need to provide consent for the verification of their vaccination status in order to be exempt from self-isolation requirements,” a news release from the government stated.
If an individual provides consent for the verification of his or her vaccination status, personal health information will only be accessed by Department of Health and Social Services staff who are authorized under the Health Information Protection and Management Act.
“If an individual does not want to consent to providing that information, they can still enter the territory as long as they self-isolate for 14 days.”
Household hosts of those travellers who self-isolate must also self-isolate unless the hosts are fully vaccinated.
“These changes are based on recommendations from (Hanley) and are guided by ‘A Path Forward: Yukon’s plan for lifting COVID-19 restrictions,’” the news release stated.
Yukoners are still required to follow the Safe 6 plus 1, which means wearing a mask in indoor public places.
“Yukon is in a good place right now, and our risk levels are much lower than just a few weeks ago,” Hanley said.
“I believe that based on our current risk levels, we can support the easing of some public health measures while ensuring the well-being and safety of Yukoners remains top of mind.”
As of last Thursday, 27,381 first doses of vaccine have been provided to Yukoners and 24,153 second doses.
Tim Kucharuk, a communications manager for the Yukon Party, wasn’t unduly impressed at the news.
“During the election, the Yukon Party was the only party promising to release a clear path forward towards reopening that included timelines and benchmarks,” he said.
“At the time, the Liberals said that this was dangerous. In fact, the premier and the now-deputy premier (Tracy-Anne McPhee) held a press conference in the last days of the election to denounce such an action.”
Kucharuk and the party weren’t altogether negative in their reactions.
“Measures to relax restrictions for bars and restaurants or to make travel easier will hopefully go a long way to supporting our hospitality and tourism sectors,” he said.
However, he criticized the announcement for its timing and its lack of clarity.
“Unfortunately, their most recent announcement still lacks many details,” Kucharuk said.
“Further, this information was released on a Friday afternoon before a long weekend – and the new rules took effect today.
“This last-minute approach to the release of information has become a trend under the Liberals and NDP, and all it does is create confusion,” Kucharuk added.
“Over the weekend, we heard from many businesses that were seeking more clarity on how this will all work as they were unable to get information from the government.
“While some restrictions are being lifted, we encourage all people to continue following the latest advice from public health officials.”
No one from the NDP was made available to the Star before press time this afternoon to comment on the changes.

The population in Ontario that have been fully vaccinated is extremely low. There is no way to get around the 14-16 wk wait for second dose, especially now they are vaccinating 12-15 yr olds. At Ontario’s snail pace, it will be fall before most families would qualify without the quarantine. Why can’t we have our first shot and wear a mask, like we have to do in Ontario, until we all get fully vaccinated? No one wants COVID and no one wants to infect others. We have learned ways to socialize while keeping ourselves and those around us safe. Please make it fair for our other provinces... not everyone in the Yukon has had their second, or even first shot, and yet they can get together in small groups. There has to be a measure of fairness when it comes to visiting a family member. Mental health is a very big killer itself, and isolation from family is a big factor.

Mathew: Maybe we should just fill the jails with maskless citizens. Now, they will have to decide who they let go first - the cons or the elderly citizens.

Drag out the rules and regulations as long as possible so the "great reset" will look normal. It's been said that almost all behaviour will look normal if one is exposed enough to it". A typical Marxist tactic. My question though, is how long freedom loving people will put up with it. My guess, not much longer. I want to see the look on the commie Liberal/NDP and the doc's face when the rebellion comes.

Question: In the past, someone was definitely messing with the thumbs up and down on a regular basis. I haven't seen that in quite a while, but someone could be doing it again.
PS - I am for removing restrictions! Not like I care a whole lot because I'm doing what I want anyway for the most part, but the face masks make my nose run like a tap, and the whole thing is stupid when we have zero cases in the Yukon and a 75% vaccination rate.

Tim Caricature the Communications officer (Uhara) for the lost ship (Yukon-Party) should realize that the Covid situation is changing across the country and elsewhere on a daily basis. Try and keep up.

Half of the people in the box store I was in today had their masks around their chin and were visiting in the line up. "Bubbles" asked if anyone was abiding by the rules anymore? I never did. When I saw what the government was doing to people, using fear and threats to control them, I wanted no part of that from the get go. So I'm pretty happy to see people wandering around connecting with each other again. We are social souls, for the most part, we like each other.
Again, my opinion, and as usual, i speak only for myself, I think Shut down the Emergency Measures Act, get back to kissing, hugging, talking. lunching, working, with each other, business as usual. People who want to mask. Do. People who want to stay home? People who want to stand 6, 8, 10, ft, around the corner, do it. Live your life any way you want to live it.

Another tell tale sign that this is happening is on May 25, 2021 at 5:01 pm
Assuming that most people vote on "all" comments that are in favour of a certain idea. It doesn't make sense that certain numbers are extremely close together, while other comments see giant differentiations.
Maybe the "killchain" is proving that votes can be changed?

Question about script; on May 25, 2021 at 4:48 pm
I've been trying this a little bit and it "seems" as if there is a script being run on the thumbs up/thumbs down. As soon as you click thumbs up on some comments it instantly adds one for thumbs down. For example; "Enoughs" comment. I refreshed and removed cookies but each time I click thumbs up, a thumbs down automatically matches it.
I've seen this on a few comments (typically those that are in support of removing COVID measures or talk against vaccines). I've also tried at random hours (say 2am) and it still happens. Or, I'm completely incorrect.

I had a little laugh reading the rules for private social gatherings and 'bubbles'. Is anyone actually doing this anymore? I lost track of it a long time ago, and knowing that there are zero cases in the Yukon, and that almost all of my friends are vaccinated, I have been completely ignoring all of it. I assume most everyone else is as well and that Hanley and Silver are rushing to get to the front of the parade. lol

I want to hear from elected MLA's whose job it is to hold government accountable, not from Tim Kucharuk who's not going to agree to anything anyone from another party says or does, ever - come on Tim, step aside and let the elected people do their jobs.

Ordinarily, I would associate this kind of spontaneous announcement of positive things as an indicator of an election on the horizon. Still some further clarity would be a nice thing to know as well. For example: "As of last Thursday, 27,381 first doses of vaccine have been provided to Yukoners and 24,153 second doses." So what are these figures translated into the percentage of Yukoners vaccinated first dose and second doses? Further, I see on the news BC is responding to public desires to carve back restrictions there too. So what is the short and long term plans for the borders?
I'd like to see a listing, perhaps printed in the paper about what will change and when, looking forward the next 90 days so some planning can be at least roughed out for those of us in the tourism sector.

More whining and complaining from the YP.

Here's the solution you're looking for : Just move on already, we've reached herd immunity, those whose choose not to vaccinate do so of their own choice so why spend millions of dollars and infringe on privacy rights trying to convince a few when it makes no difference at all.

Here's some more clarity: Say NO to vaccine passport, and ditch the ridiculous mask mandate. Healthy people should not be forced to wear masks. These mask mandates have been especially harmful to school children. Increased rates of depression, health issues, etc.
Look up Texas and Florida: they opened up completely months ago, no restriction of any kind, no mask mandate, and their covid cases plummeted and stayed low. And they have a much lower rate of vaccination than the Yukon.
Fact is, most people with covid only have mild or no symptoms. All 82 cases in the Yukon recovered at home. This is definitely not an emergency. Two persons died of other, pre-existing, conditions, and it is wrong to label these unfortunate deaths as 'covid deaths'. Skewering statistics like that only raises mistrust. Stop it.
Adults can go ahead and take that experimental injection which has not been tested for long-term adverse effects. But there should never be any coercion, and vaccine passports are all about COERCION. Also, this experimental injection should not be given to youth under 18 years of age, who cannot provide informed consent.

From Hanley? on May 25, 2021 at 3:09 pm
Who receives his info from an email
Why don't you ask him?
It's a chain of authority that defers responsibility.
These changes have nothing to do with the unique situation of the Yukon. They are pushed federally. That's why we see provinces/territories acting in unison.
You think Hanley is sitting there, "Hey Canada, since the Yukon is the role model we'll lead the way!"
Ha!
He's a puppet. Same hand up inside of everyone in gov.
