With the Fraser Institute saying “Yukon is dimming in the eyes of mining investors,” Yukon Party mining critic Scott Kent wants to know what the government is doing about it.

“We believe that mining is going to be essential as we transition away from fossil fuels,” Energy, Mines and Resources Minister John Streicker said last Thursday.

He said the government continues to support exploration in the territory.

According to Natural Resources Canada, the Yukon can expect to see a 10-per-cent drop in overall exploration expenditures this year compared to 2023, Kent said.

A major changing coming for the industry is replacing the 100-plus year-old mining rules now in place.

“We are working in partnership with First Nations, as we agreed to do under the devolution transfer agreement, to write new minerals legislation that will be for the future of the Yukon,” Streicker said.

$10,000,000.00
That’s how much various Yukon creditors are owed by the abandoned Minto mine.
Tell me again about these great high paying jobs the Yukon needs.
Until the Yukon government politicians start demanding better of mining companies, we should just take a pass.
And I’m only speaking about the big hard rock mines, not our bread and butter placer operators.

Wasn't it the Liberals who said some time ago, "you can do all the exploration you want, but you won't be able to mine". If I were a mining company, I wouldn't do any exploration in Yukon as long as the libs and NDP are running the government.

Scott Kent wants to know what the gov is doing about it?
Well, they’re providing taxpayer funded care and maintenance to the mines the owners walked away from. And that’s including the Wolverine mine, and Mr Kent should bet that one well, as he was the EMR minister who signed off on the ridiculously low security bond for that mine.
Cmon Scott, what more are taxpayers supposed to do these mines you keep speaking of?
Cheap power, taxpayer funded roads, taxpayer funded ore terminals and taxpayers money to clean it all up when the companies walk away.

Where are the decent paying jobs coming from to support all the newcomers to the Yukon? We all can't work for the Government
