Yukoners can now book seasonal COVID and flu vaccinations – but RSV vaccines will not be available in the territory this fall.
RSV – or respiratory syncytial virus – causes lung infections, and is particularly bad for infants, children and older adults.
According to Canada’s public health agency website, the Arexvy RSV vaccine is approved for use in adults over 60.
It has yet to be fully reviewed by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) for use in all age groups.
A spokesperson from the Yukon Department of Health and Social Services told the Star they are awaiting guidance from NACI before making the vaccine available in the territory.
“The situation will be reassessed as new evidence becomes available, to make informed decisions on the vaccine distribution in the future,” department spokesperson Zachary Burke said in an email.
COVID and flu vaccines can be done at the same time, and appointments can be booked at Yukon.ca.
Dr. Sudit Ranade, the chief medical officer of health, told the Star earlier this fall he doubted there would be a significant RSV vaccine program in the territory for this fall-winter.
