YG ‘buried’ report on tourism industry damage: Yukon Party
New data estimate that the plummet in tourism caused by COVID-19 will contribute to thousands of job losses and a minimum six-per-cent drop in the business sector GDP in the Yukon.
“It is quite unprecedented,” Bishnu Saha, the director of the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, told the Star this morning.
“Tourism is one of the sectors which is the hardest-hit of the sectors in the Yukon economy … (and) the contribution of tourism to GDP in Yukon is quite high.”
The six-page research report is titled “Yukon in COVID-19 Pandemic: Decline in Tourism Activities and the Impact on the Economy”. It was published to the Yukon government’s website on June 8.
It was prepared by Statistics Canada in collaboration with the Yukon statistics bureau.
The report found that international tourist arrivals had already dropped 25 per cent in the first three months of 2020.
It’s estimated that at the end of 2020, tourism activities will drop between 67.4 and 96 per cent, depending on when the border opens.
The report outlines three scenarios that will affect the Yukon’s economy.
Scenario one assumes that travel restrictions will start to be lifted and national borders will be opened in early July.
The annual drop in tourism activities would be 67.4 per cent in this scenario. This would likely result in 1,995 job losses and a 6.3-per-cent drop in the business sector GDP.
Scenario two assumes that borders will be opened in early September, with an 86.9 per cent drop in tourism activities. In this case, there would be 2,572 lost jobs, and an 8.1-per-cent drop in business sector GDP.
Scenario three assumes that borders will be opened in early December and there would be a 96-per-cent drop in tourism activities.
Scenario three estimates 2,841 lost jobs and an 8.9-per-cent drop in the business sector GDP.
According to Saha, the ratio of employed to the number of jobs is 80 per cent. This means that in the best-case scenario, 1,995 job losses would translate to 1,600 unemployed Yukoners.
The business sector GDP accounts for approximately half of the Yukon’s total GDP. This means that the drop in tourism is likely to cause a minimum 3.4 per cent drop in the territory’s total GDP.
The statistics bureau will publish a business survey report next week that estimates an overall GDP drop of five per cent, Saha said.
Even when borders do open, the impact on the tourism industry will be substantial.
“Tourism patterns are likely to be substantially different from what they have been in previous years,” Saha said.
He noted that it’s “out of the scope of this paper” to estimate whether tourism will be buoyed by open borders this summer. The industry may be further impacted by other factors, he said.
The statistics also don’t consider government business support, meaning some jobs may be saved by federal and territorial funds, Saha explained.
Tourism activities account for 18.4 per cent of the Yukon’s business sector jobs, which is three times more than in the rest of Canada. More than half of these jobs are in the accommodation and restaurant industries.
These data were commissioned by the statistics bureau in May. They were prepared by Weimin Wang, principal researcher in the Economic Analysis Division of Statistics Canada.
The Yukon government announced its plan to open the Yukon border to B.C. on May 29. That is planned for July 1.
Yukon Party MLA, Scott Kent said today he is concerned that the government didn’t share the report more openly with the public.
“I’m surprised the government wasn’t very forthright in bringing this forward; it’s important modelling,” Kent told the Star.
“I think that businesses need to see (this) but the document was buried on Yukon.ca.”
Kent said the numbers are concerning for the tourism industry, as they more clearly show what many Yukoners have heard anecdotally since the beginning of the pandemic.
“We’ve seen many businesses struggling; they’ve had to either lay off staff or close their doors, some of them permanently,” Kent said.
“This study certainly shows that.”
The Yukon Party has publicly pressed the government to reconvene the legislative assembly so elected officials can debate the COVID-19 restrictions.
“I think it goes back again to that all-party committee we suggested earlier on in the spring sitting that would have looked at all the economic impacts and come up with some recommendations of programming to support businesses,” Kent said.
“This government is quickly becoming one of the most secretive and undemocratic in the history of the territory.”

@woodcutter - that's funny. All your " directions" for the YP to follow is exactly what they have been doing these last number of years. Pretty sure they are the most "electable" of the bunch.

@Brent. The Yukon Party is a big tent party with many left leaning conservatives and right leaning liberals. So yes Kent is a Liberal.

If COW wants to make the City more safer from fire remove some of the spruce trees and replace them with evergreens which don't burn. That was not my idea but a City employee but our mayor will not listen to them according to them. The point is evergreens are great as fire protection like birch popular etc.

@wilf carter - we in forestry do not say, can't see the forest for the trees. We say, look at all those trees, I am rich.
@JC I've heard the doom and gloom about deficits, history has proven most of the deficit has been built up by the conservative governments, since I was in grade 9, or about 40 years now, and here we are, funding you while you putter on the back 9.
Juniper, you really must make a point, your long winded drivel is incoherent and I believe most folks give up reading, such I have, before the end of the second paragraph.
I can tell from the vast majority of comments, that all the YP voters have gathered to deny the existence of a pandemic, similarly as the deny climate change. Word of advice, if you ever want to be in the drivers seat again, come up with a platform that responds to the voters, purge the radical right that you have courted, tone down your social conservative values and get an electable leader...wait, then you would be in the center of the political spectrum and you would be accused of being a liberal.

No matter what numbers or statistics! We need a very strong digital marketing team in the tourism bureau. Non stop promoting Yukon and also tourism for sure! Don't waste money on useless promotion! Advertising on Google search/Facebook/twitter.

Statistics are not infallible. We live in age of statistics, every person is a statistic, but no human being fits the statistical average. Wait and see if the stats ring true. Why they hid it, who knows.

Despite the tourism industry being devastated, Tourism Yukon had zero layoffs or pay cuts.
Yet they have done ZERO marketing to promote travel within the territory (announced May 29) and ZERO marketing promoting BC opening on July 1st.
What is this bloated, over paid team doing with their time?? Not helping the industry that's for sure!

I think one of the last people that should be slammed in the comment section is Scott Kent. He is my MLA, and we have NEVER seen such a dedicated individual go to bat for us. This guy not only works hard for constituents - he works hard for anyone who needs his assistance. I haven’t heard of a single instance in which he has not at least tried to help. That guy is there real deal and I will fight to keep him as our MLA. You want to call someone down, pick someone who actually deserves it. Thank you for all you do, Scott.

Such garbage. Could anyone not know if folks can't travel that tourism will suffer?
Just loser type drivel from the YP's and Kent is the best (meaning the worst) at spewing.
This Territory is full of whiny saps, more and more evident when the chips are down. I expect YP will win the next election.

"You got to accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative. Latch on to the affirmative." As Bing Crosby and the Andrew Sisters promoted, create your own view of the world and be content with your mistakes and failures; rose-coloured glasses are optional.
Contrary to YG's practice of issuing a media release to indicate they really are doing things in that big building next to the river and elsewhere, they did not announce this report in their typical fashion. They didn't bury it, they just looked the other way.
You don't need to be a genius to understand why it is an elementary problem with a very predictable outcome: Close the country to international visitors, halt inter province travel, prohibit people from entering the Yukon and our tourism sector will crash.
If I was whispering into Mr. Kent's ear, I'd be encouraging him to ask how government - who knew this result was coming, is planning to off-set the financial impacts that are also going to happen as forecast. I wonder if they create models for analyzing these situations? I'd love to see them if they do.

Scott Kent is doing a good job bringing this report to our attention.
Scott advocates for his constituants and Yukoners. It's so easy for people to continue to trash the Yukon Party. Scott is of course part of that party but he beat two good candidates and represents his riding in a very positive way.

If you read my posts, you know that I believe that we should be much more opened up. We have no covid in the Yukon! However, Covid exists in abundance elsewhere. I cannot imagine us opening our doors to Americans.
I would propose that we set a standard, a threshold of Covid activity that allows us to trust outsiders to come visit. If we decided that any location that has fewer than 1 daily new case of Covid per 100,000 people, we would open up to all of Canada except Ontario and Quebec. (Both are nearing that threshold.) We could also open up to most of Europe. I believe that at this level we could have some amount of tourism, and reasonable protection from Covid.

Yukoners the liberals are resorting to total lying. I wonder who that might be in liberals. Wilf Carter sensible twin I did not post. Yukoners governing is totally over the local liberals heads. Let's take one MLA who used to work for Yukon News and got fired as he told me. He used call down mining and any resource's work as killing Yukon environment. All we need is federal government money to live on but going to be reduced because our country is on the edge of going down the tubes. So folks get ready to plant your own food and keep your guns for gathering food. No more police. Yukon liberals did not stand up for our RCMP but supported Trudeau calling them systemic racist!!!!

Let's face it Yukoners liberals in the Yukon and Federal did not know how to handle CV19 and support our economy at the same time. They acted like a group of people who can't see the forest for the trees as we say in forestry.

Everyone gets an opinion. After reliable information started coming out, I was quite hard on people that drank "liberally" of the government fear campaign. Until a member of my family screamed at me. She is genuinely terrified. Even though she knows covid does not attack healthy children, she can't let her child out of her sight. Ok.. stay home. It's ok. Everyone, do as you think best, but don't deride or ridicule others for disagreeing.
I just want to point out, that National borders were never closed. Illegals are still coming in at Roxham, Montreal, Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver airports remain open to international travel. While somewhat limited, Air North is still flying, (no meals). Road borders have not been closed. Last I read, here in the Star, 2,000 people came down the highway and 16 were turned back. I suppose, the border was closed to 16 people.
I don't care what people choose to do. But, politician's? You are supposed to be protecting US, not staying home cowering on your sofa. Go out here and there to talk somberly to the press. You are not supposed to be directing me, my actions, my money, without legislative debate. As i have said before.. I want Legislature convened..I want over sight committee's doing their jobs.. how did this government DOUBLE their borrowing power to 800 million dollars without any debate? Without someone saying, WTH? The Yukon Gov already owes $210 million with what? 23% of the Yukon working age on welfare, and less than 20K working taxpayers. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/yukon-debt-limit-doubles-800-million-1.5615085#:~:text=Yukon%20Premier%20Sandy%20Silver%20says%20his%20government%20could%20use%20some,debt%20stands%20at%20%24210%20million.
The Liberals are noted right through Canada, for diversion, outright lying, hedging the truth or hiding it. Someone is going to say.. and the Conservatives weren't? That's Liberal diversion. The Conservatives are gone 4 years..it's THIS government who is responsible. Something happens to people once they are elected. They become someone else, the King of frogs on this lily pad. I voted for that person that presented with honestly, integrity, and I got..well..the above description. Parliament, federally, is supposed to sit 135 days a year. The parties are NOT over worked. In the last 12 months, Parliament sat 39 days with another 3 months of full pay, no work. I forgot to ask, but with leaders around the world taking pay cuts in solidarity with people who are losing everything.. Did Sandy order pay cuts for himself and his cartel? Just asking.

Its just the way the Liberals do business. They lie to the people, deceive them and fool them. What the the people don't know won't hurt them. Justin Trudeau does it all the time. When he promised "transparency, he meant for the Conservatives. Smoke and mirrors. The Left invented this trick. And it will go on and on. When they get caught, they find a way to blame the Conservatives. And the sheep will keep following them - right to the wolf den.
