The Yukon Hospital Corp. reported today that Whitehorse General Hospital and its intensive care unit remain at the red status for available inpatient beds.

Red means space is extremely limited/hospital full. Yellow means space is limited in some service areas. Green means space is available.

James Low, the corporation’s director, people services and culture, responded by email this morning to the Star’s inquiries.

“Hospital occupancy ebbs and flows daily (often on an hourly basis),” stated Low. “Currently, WGH is in ‘red’ status.

“We share the information on our website to give Yukoners a general sense of how busy we are in the hospitals. We encourage everyone to not ... delay coming to hospital if they require urgent attention.”

Low went on to explain what the red status means.

“Red status ... means we are experiencing very limited or no bed availability in key areas – at the moment we have limited or no bed availability in our inpatient units (for admitted patients).

“Our maternity unit, ICU, secure medical unit and community hospitals do have some bed availability.

“There is no single reason why we are experiencing high occupancy – we are simply going through a period of higher than expected volumes,” he added.

Low also explained what this status means to people seeking health care at the hospital.

“In periods of limited occupancy:

  • We work to ensure any patient who no longer requires hospital care, can be safely transitioned to another level of care such as a continuing care facility, or have all the supports in place to safely return home. This requires us to work closely with our health system partners.

  • Some people waiting to be admitted may have to stay longer in the Emergency Department in order to be cared for safely.

  • We may also look at using all hospital beds in the system, including those at Watson Lake and Dawson City Community Hospitals.

This means only when safe and appropriate, we may transfer a patient temporarily to one of the community hospitals.”

Red status, this a bad thing?
Red is the only colour that matters up here these days.
One could claim it's a superior colour, one that trumps all, like the first colour ever discovered...before all the mere other ...hues.
Red runs our economy...
Red runs our lan’ policies...
Red runs in our streets...
Red absolutely flows via in our monocle equipped courts, “lady justice” took off her blindfold in 1984. *team red did that
Red seems to be the bees knees, never to be questioned, challenged like ever, blind red faith seems “the way”

But now here, Red is bad?
So seems...Red will get ya dead still has traction suppose?

State of emergency on Oct 4, 2022 at 6:40 pm

@Jeff: I’m sure they are. My (then) family doctor & head of YMA was advising patients without a GP to do that 20 years ago. The number of people keeling over from blood clots, heart failure, drug overdoses and, of course, the ever present anxiety induced by climate change, just might be taking up a few more spots than usual, too.

Stop squandering health care funds on useless covid PCR tests that churn out false positives, and ineffective & risky covid jabs. Stop the fearmongering.

Use the funds to hire more nurses and promote healthy lifestyle that boosts our immune system: Vitamin C & D, daily walks in fresh air and sunshine, good nutrition, good sleep, and a positive outlook.

Sorry DL - That was a misquote. Two epidemiologists were having dinner to discuss Covid concerns - When it came time to pay the bill one doctor said, My… o… uh, card it is then. A millennial journalist thought it was all one word - Myocarditis, however the o was simply just an exclamation because the doctor could not find the card he was looking for at first.

How many of those ICU beds are covid? We never used to get reports like this. (and thanks to those Doctors and nurses, what would we do without you?)

In communities there is over a month wait to see a traveling doctor. The Whitehorse walk in clinic is closed. There is a wait list to have a family doctor. Are the people without a doctor going to the emergency room for non-emergencies since there is no other option?

The reason people would be avoiding going to the Hospital is two fold:

During COVID you conditioned people to see the Hospital as a place you shouldn't go unless absolutely necessary. Secondly you are advertising that you are full when in fact you are only busy in one sector. What did you think would be the response. Just do your job and quit Fear Mongering.
