A popular Whitehorse-area woman is reeling after a cabin fire left her homeless last weekend.

Lindsay Caskenette, who works at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve as head of visitor services, also lost two of her five dogs in the fire that struck her Takhini River Road residence last Sunday night.

Details are scanty so far, but she has received an outpouring of support on social media.

“I’m so overwhelmed with grief and gratitude,” Caskenette wrote on her Facebook page.

“Thank you every single person that has taken time to call, text, provide offerings of all kinds, including the gofundme support.”

Caskenette called her loss “horrific.

“It feels pretty insurmountable. Please know I read every one of your messages and appreciate every single one deeply but right now, I can’t respond and am not able to take all the calls.

“Keep sending us your love and thoughts of resilience – we really really need it.”

Jake Paleczny, the preserve’s executive director, told the Star this morning, “I’m not co-ordinating the fundraising – just a supporter (like so many other people).

“We’re just making sure she’s got the time and space to work through all this without having to worry about something like work. And lots of our staff are personally supporting her through things like the gofundme.”

Palezcny said the loss has been “devastating” for Caskenette, who has worked at the preserve for approximately 10 years.

“It’s kind of unimaginable, and we’re thinking a lot about her.

“It’s devastating circumstances,” he said during his emotional conversation with the Star.

“The response has been incredible, though, and we’re so pleased.”

Virginia Sarrazin has started the gofundme account for Caskanette, with a $35,000-goal.

So far, $36,310 has been raised since Monday, with 275 donations rolling in.

The initial goal was to raise $20,000, but the donations quickly blew past that limit.

The cause of the fire has yet to be officially determined.
