Wednesday marks the one-year anniversary of a double murder that shattered the residents of Faro.
Saengduean Honchaiyaphum, 42, and Patrick McCracken, 73, were killed by a gunman.
Another man was critically injured.
Honchaiyaphum was the estranged wife of her accused killer, Ralph Bernard Shaw, 63, who remains jailed. The charges against him include first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault.
“That terrible day forever touched the lives of everyone in our community – some deeply and forever,” town council said in a statement Monday.
“Faro Town Council recognizes that there may be people from outside the community who are interested in how the residents have responded a year after those tragic events.
“First, we ask that everyone respect the privacy of the residents, because the cycle of mourning is not the same for everyone.
“Some Faro residents are still deeply sensitive, so we ask everyone to be especially kind, respectful, and considerate of others during this time.”
Council said it appreciates the support the community and the impacted families have received.
“Expressions of love and caring poured in from across Canada,” council said.
“The Yukon government provided immediate support, not only to those who experienced loss, but also for those who responded to the calls for assistance.
Faro town council especially appreciates how leaders from Ross River demonstrated their caring by coming to Faro to provide spiritual and moral support.
“The Feeding of the Fire, for almost a week, was a sacred demonstration of love and support for all of our community. The beating of the drums shall echo in the hearts of Faro residents forever.”
Council also thanked the many volunteers “who have worked to ease the stress from those memories, and for their time and energy to help us to return to the wonderful community that we all want to remember.
“It is only in time of adversity that we find out who our real friends are. The Town of Faro is grateful for the many, many friends that we have.”
