The Yukon is closing in on 500 active cases of COVID-19.
The Yukon is closing in on 500 active cases of COVID-19.
According to Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health, every recent case that’s been documented by the Yukon government is of the Omicron variant.
“There are 471 active cases today,” Elliott said during today’s weekly COVID-19 briefing. “We are averaging 92 cases a day in recent days, and 77 per day overall.”
There have been 70 cases recorded in the last 24 hours. Every community in the Yukon has cases of COVID-19.
Two people are hospitalized with the virus, although their conditions weren’t revealed.
Since the government opened the Takhini Arena as a drive-through site for people to pick up rapid tests to be used at home, 1,400 kits have been handed out.
More are on the way, Elliott said. The kits are being handed out on an “honour” basis, and Elliott said she hoped people wouldn’t hoard them.
“Take the resources you need and no more,” she said.
Elliott added she believes Yukoners will do exactly that.
“Time and again, we’ve seen that,” although she provided no examples.
She reminded people the tests are very accurate for assessing whether you have COVID-19, but are less effective for determining whether you don’t.
False negatives are a problem, she said. Anyone showing symptoms should still consider self-isolation, even with a negative test result.
As well, Elliott reiterated anyone with symptoms should presume they have the virus rather than a cold or influenza.
An outbreak has been declared at the Copper Ridge long-term care facility, with two people testing positive.
“Despite all of our measures, the numbers continue to increase,” Elliott said, adding “many” Yukoners can expect to contract the virus.
Cases continue to occur between fully-vaccinated and unvaccinated people, she said, although she didn’t prove the percentage split.
Her figures suggest people with double vaccines are 50 per cent less likely to be seriously ill, while people who have received the third booster shot are 1/5th less likely to suffer severe infections and symptoms.
Elliott estimated the outbreak here in the Yukon is at least a week or two from peaking.
The territory is one week behind the situation in British Columbia, she said, and two weeks behind Ontario, so the numbers will increase.
Interestingly, the government is not asking people using the free at-home rapid test kits to report their results, nor is it planning on doing so.
Elliott said there are more than enough data to assess the overall situation without that information.
Meanwhile, the COVID-19 rules on travel have changed.
Just before Christmas, Elliott recommended anyone returning from domestic travel outside the Yukon should self-isolate informally for three to five days by staying at home and reducing contacts, whether they had symptoms or not.
Now, Elliott is recommending that Yukoners returning from domestic travel monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and self-isolate when they are sick.
In a news release issued Tuesday evening, Elliott said this change is being made to reflect that COVID-19 activity is similar in the Yukon to that outside the territory.
The release stated, “Yukoners should use caution when travelling within Canada at this time. Many Canadian jurisdictions are experiencing higher case activity than at any other time during the pandemic and some are experiencing a strain on essential services such as transportation and health care
“If Yukoners choose to travel, they should familiarize themselves with the public health regulations, be prepared to show their proof of vaccination and accept that there may be challenges accessing services.”
Yukon communities remain at a significant risk from the current COVID-19 Omicron variant, the statement added.
Elliott continues to recommend against non-essential travel to the communities.
“Several First Nations governments and communities have travel advisories in place, so Yukoners are encouraged to check before making any travel plans.”
Elliott said, “the rapid rise of Omicron in the territory, across the country and around the world makes it unwise to travel for non-essential purposes right now.
“Travel increases your risk of getting COVID-19 due to an increase in potential and actual contacts and if you get sick and need hospital care, this puts an added burden on you, your family and the health care system at a time when most systems are stretched right now.
“Stay close to home and keep your contacts low,” she advised.
Fifteen Yukoners have died of COVID, though some had underlying health concerns as well.
A series of public exposure notices have also been issued by public health officials. They are:
• F.H. Collins Secondary School, Math 11 Foundations, Jan. 4;
• Elijah Smith Elementary School, Grades 6/7 split, Jan. 4, Jan. 5;
• Church of Nazarene Daycare, toddler group, Jan. 4, Jan. 5; preschool group, Jan. 4;
• Ecole Whitehorse Elementary School, Grade 1B, Jan. 5, Jan. 6; staff room, Jan. 4, Jan. 5, between noon and 12:30 p.m.;
• Jack Hulland Elementary School, Grade 3M, Jan. 5-7; staff room, Jan. 7, between 10 and 10:30 a.m.; and
• Petit Cheval Blanc, Les Renards group, Jan. 6.
Parents are advised to read the letter with instructions for them, guardians, the children attending the schools and the daycares, and staff.

Your description of fighting for breath, being unvaccinated, and a two time heart attack, plus 2 heart surgeries.
My son is not vaccinated, survived leukemia after two years of chemo and radiation, and we had the delta variant. The worse symptoms we had was loss of taste and smell and a fever for 4 hours. Basic vitamins, a shot of chagga twice a day and we are fine.
There are thousands of doctors who speak out about the vaccine and putting a pathogen in your body but you choose to listen to the liberal news and defend it. This virus is a virus not a plague. The news outlets, the governments worldwide promote this fear mongering crap but your question what right does a unvaccinated have to use the hospital because they don't adhere to what everyone else did and got vaccinated. That's simple. Being Canadian gives us that right. Not only that but do me a favor go get three rapid test put 5 drops of tap water into it and explain to me why it shows up positive for covid. Stop promoting a vaccine that is a pathogen and for the record there are numerous treatments for covid with far less side effects as your fake vaccine so save your fact telling to facts. It is closed minded people like you that think that you know what is better if everyone would just listen. Enjoy your Sunday.

It's really confusing to listen to all the medical reports concerning Covid. On TV or any news outlet from any nation say the same things by qualified professionals with more training and letters going behind their name than I know about. Compare those learned opinions with the Yukon contrary crowd who take one snipet of a case and say there that proves the whole thing.
Are these professionals on every channel stupid and do they have an uncovered conspiracy that Yukon contrarians are wise to? What would their end game be?
Regardless 20% of people should not be able to use up 80% of a common resource because of false heroism. (I'm talking ICU beds where the one question they all ask the doc is "Is it too late for me to get vaccinated?", as they struggle for breath.)

What are the long term side effects? on Jan 15, 2022 at 9:26 am
The UK Department of Health admits on page 23 that "No antibody levels appear to be lower in people who become infected after two doses of vaccination". It goes on to say that this drop in antibodies is essentially permanent. What does this mean?
We know that vaccines do not prevent infection or transmission of the virus (indeed, the report elsewhere shows that vaccinated adults are now much more likely to be infected than unvaccinated ones).
The British now find that the vaccine interferes with the body's ability to make antibodies after infection not only against the spike protein but also against other parts of the virus. In particular, vaccinated people do not appear to form antibodies against the nucleocapsid protein, the envelope of the virus, which is a crucial part of the response in unvaccinated people.
In the long term, the vaccinated are far more susceptible to any mutations in the spike protein, even if they have already been infected and cured once or more. The unvaccinated, on the other hand, will gain lasting, if not permanent, immunity to all strains of the alleged virus after being naturally infected with it even once.

Your simple jab was a acknowledgment of your ignorance to the truth. There are as many fully vaccinated people sick today as there are unvaccinated, that goes for hospitalization as well. You make as much sense as California staff shortage - so they allow the vaccinated staff work even though they are sick rather than the doctors and nurses who have had covid and have natural immunity to it. Your so called international knowledge is solely based on liberal beliefs and not science fact or experience. So I'll enjoy my simple life and simple friends and I hope you have a awesome weekend - stay safe wear your mask and please stay at least 6 feet away from me .

Cmon man. It was obvious to everyone that the numbers were used to simplify the point that looking just at patients in hospital and how many are vaxxed/unvaxxed is a faulty way of looking at things - because then you haven’t accounted for the fact that the vast majority of citizens have been vaccinated. It’s that last step that people are not making.
Me using 1000 vaxxed and 100 unvaxxed showed that extra step in a simple way. Yet still simple people get confused. Sorry about that.
Jeff B in here understood that. Others understood that. You did not.
If you have ever looked at a math textbook it’s full of examples that are there to teach a point and not to exactly replicate reality. “If Johnny brings two apples to the picnic and Karen brings three apples” doesn’t literally mean there is a picnic like this happening somewhere with 5 apples.
You’ll get the upvotes you need for that ego boost though so I guess there is that.

Obviously, this Omicron thing is as mild as the common cold. So, let's deal with it like the common cold. There is no emergency. Stop the testing, and all will go back to normal. Colds and flues are normal in the winter season.
CMOs and governments have been misrepresenting covid in order to compel the experimental injections on citizens. Instead, they should be telling us the numbers of severe adverse reactions and deaths following these experimental covid injections. And plainly admit that lockdowns, masks, and restrictions will NOT stop a highly transmissible respiratory virus.
Here's some wise words from Israel's top immunologist, professor Ehud Qimron:
“Doomed To Fail” – Top Immunologist Blasts Global COVID Response Driven By “False Propaganda”
https://invesbrain.com/doomed-to-fail-top-immunologist-blasts-global-covid-response-driven-by-false-propaganda/
Quoting just a small portion of professor Qimron's letter: "Two years late, you finally realize that a respiratory virus cannot be defeated and that any such attempt is doomed to fail. You do not admit it, because you have admitted almost no mistake in the last two years, but in retrospect it is clear that you have failed miserably in almost all of your actions, and even the media is already having a hard time covering your shame."
Great letter, and a must read. Why isn't Canadian mainstream media talking about such statements from honest immunologists...

I took math
With today's Alberta numbers
if 1000 vaccinated catch covid - 9 go to hospital
if 1000 partially vaxxed catch covid - 35 go to hospital
if 1000 unvaccinated catch covid - 27 go to hospital
But it isn't that simple. At the moment you have a higher chance of catching covid if you are vaccinated. 81% of cases are fully vaccinated, 17.5% of cases are unvaccinated, but 73.3% of people are fully vaccinated and 20.2% of people are unvaccinated.
Out of the total number of people, not just the cases, the chances of being in the hospital right now are:
Vaccinated 1 in 7000.
Unvaccinated 1 in 3000.
These numbers are a far cry from what I see in the mainstream news.
So at the moment it's twice as likely people will be hospitalized if unvaccinated. Obviously this puts strain on the system, but let's not forget how many healthcare workers were fired. How much strain has that put on the system? From the people I know in healthcare, they are strained because so many healthcare workers are off work with covid. Why isn't that a news headline? "Healthcare workers overloaded with covid because they all have covid".
The stats:
vaxxed 50,864 cases, 462 hospitalized
partially 862 cases, 31 hospitalized
unvaxxed 11,007 cases, 292 hospitalized
Alberta has 4,443,000 people.
73.3% of Alberta is fully vaxxed, 3,256,719 people.
6.5% is partially, 288,795 people.
20.2% is unvaccinated, 897,486 people.

Where the hell do you get your math skills from? And the supposed facts you just spewed 1000 vaccinated 20 go to hospital, but 10 out of every 100 unvaccinated go to hospital. Those are both lies exaggerated crap that you've made up to make yourself sound like you are in the know. Right now in Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec the hospitalization count for vaccinated and unvaccinated are about 50/50 and death rates cannot be fairly assessed in Canada because the liberals are counting everyone who died while having covid not because of covid. So set your facts straight and stop correcting everyone. The liberals sell this vaccine like the cure all. Funny - I think the triple vaccinated people who are sick with covid right now would disagree.

JFC again you guys need some math lessons
1000 vaccinated people - 20 go into hospital with covid
100 unvaccinated people - 10 go into hospital
You guys would get all frothy about there being “twice as many people in hospital are vaccinated!” 20 vs 10! Checkmate!
Meanwhile if you had paid attention in grade 8 math you’d be able to take it the next step and see that 2% of vaccinated people went into hospital in my example versus 10% of unvaccinated.
Now go take a Tylenol for the headache I just gave you.
And Jeff B - False Negatives are a real problem with rapid tests. You internet doctors will go to a superspreader party at night and then take a rapid test the next morning (which of course will be negative as it takes a few days for the virus levels to get to the point where the test turns positive) and then you’ll give yourself the all clear and head off to work or to go see Grandma in Copper Ridge. And when she gets covid you’ll be like “cant of been me - I tested negative!”
That’s Elliots concern with rapid tests. False negatives giving people false reassurance.
Either you understand all this and are just pretending you don’t to score internet upvotes.
Or you don’t understand it - which makes Dr Elliot right that we can’t trust a lot of people in the public to have the brainpower to interpret something as simple as a home pregnancy test.

Re: The drive-thru pickup site for the test kits.
What about those who don't drive and have no car? Many of us use public transit and have no vehicle. There needs to be a walk-in place to pick up a kit. OR, do what Great Britain did - MAIL a kit to each household. This would reach those who have mobility issues and can't go standing outside in -40 to pick up.
Yet another example of how Whitehorse excludes. The very people you need to reach with these kits include the homeless, elders, and the poor - and the vast majority of those have no transportation to go to a drive-in to pick up a test kit.

"She reminded people the tests are very accurate for assessing whether you have COVID-19, but are less effective for determining whether you don’t" 60% of the time, it works every time. A test with an absurd number of false positives would be quite bad at determining if you don't have Covid.
"Fifteen Yukoners have died of COVID, though some had underlying health concerns as well."
Go on, expand upon this statement, just let it out. And what were their ages? And how many people died of the flu last year compared to a pre-covid year? The CDC director admitted that 75% of omicron deaths are of people with 4 comorbidities. That's 4.
"Cases continue to occur between fully-vaccinated and unvaccinated people"
The government, and citizens, threw everything they had at covid: discrimination, segregation, surveillance, human rights violations, civil rights violations, experimental medical treatments, censorship, a cult like adherence to "science", and the creation of a two tiered society. But it just wasn't enough. Maybe if more lives were ruined we could have kept the cases down.
Remind me again why people were fired for not taking an experimental treatment. Did everyone get the results they were expecting? Are you safe at work now?
It is coming out from the medical "leaders" everywhere that the case numbers are flawed and the tests are flawed. Many places will stop counting hospital patients as covid if they came in for a non covid reasons. This is an excuse/reason to lower the case numbers. Ok fine, but this technique has been used to blow up the numbers for the last year to justify tyranny. If the way cases are counted changes it should be done to past cases as well. What will this do to the Yukon's death count?
What is the future of boosters now that everyone is getting covid? Should people be forced to take a shot when they have natural immunity? No. The answer is no. No one should be forced to inject anything into their body.
In the last week the hospitalizations in Alberta have increased 30% for unvaccinated and 85% for vaccinated. If this trend continues, proportionally the hospitalization of vaccinated will out number the unvaccinated by next week. Obviously this is bad and I hope for all cases to go down.
Perhaps as everyone sits at home for the next week, sick, they should reflect on how far we, as a society, have sunk. What was accomplished by all of the awful things that have transpired in the Yukon over the last year.

80% of Yukoners have been vaxxed. So, who is spreading the virus? Sounds to me, the vaxxed are spreading it to the unvaxxed. So, let's lock down the vaxxed and let the unvaxxed go about their business. And, mask wearing, social distancing and staying home, are not solving the problem. Maybe wearing those dirty masks are causing more problems than solving them. I have seen some people's mask so dirty I wouldn't use them to wipe up dirt on my floor.
