AN AMBITIOUS AGENDA – Tackling climate change and growing the territorial economy are two of Premier Sandy Silver's political resolutions for 2022.

‘The future looks good,’ premier says of 2022

Ed. note: the leaders of the Liberal Party, the Yukon Party and the NDP reflected on 2021 and 2022 with the Star shortly before the Christmas-New Year’s break. Their thoughts are presented in political analyses here and on p. 5.

Premier Sandy Silver is an optimistic sort of dude.

Last year saw his Liberal party lose its majority status after a spring election, and oversee a cantankerous fall session where two of his higher-profile ministers took a pummelling from the opposition parties over the Hidden Valley School sex abuse scandal.

Silver was definitely preferring to look at whatever “silver” linings he could find when he was talked to the Star in a year-end interview.

Not surprisingly, citing what stood out for him in 2021, the first thing he mentioned was the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccines a year ago.

He spent much of the year talking up the shots as the way out of the pandemic with what – at times – seemed a nigh-religious fervour.

“At this time last year (2020), we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the vaccines,” the premier recalled.

It was last January, of course, that the vaccines were first made available to the public.

The government and Yukon public health officials started with seniors in long-term care homes, then expanded clinics to the communities in short order.

Of course, that led to the appalling Beaver Creek incident where two wealthy people from British Columbia scammed their way into receiving shots.

That perhaps wasn’t the most auspicious start to the program, and neither were the initial difficulties in booking shots efficiently at the clinics.

That, however, didn’t deter the optimistic perspective of the premier.

“We were finishing up vaccines before the rest of Canada got started,” Silver boasted.

He also pointed to the introduction of universal child care as one of his highlights.

That announcement came not long before he pulled the trigger on the territorial election in March, amidst a flurry of other announcements.

The territory was one of the earlier jurisdictions in Canada to sign on to a partnership with the federal government to offer the service as part of its “$10-a-day” policy initiative.

“Child-care is extremely important,” Silver said, pointing to the $25 million a year funding promise his Yukon government made.

As well, during the summer, Silver attended the demolition of a former residential school in Lower Post, B.C., just south of the Yukon border. He called that a “historic occasion”, the memory of which will linger with him.

“The ceremony had so much weight,” he said. “And there are many families and survivors of that school in the Yukon. Now it will be converted into a place where the community will gather.”

Silver also pointed to the Yukon’s economy, which is thriving in most ways compared to the rest of Canada.

The territory was one of only two jurisdictions in the country where the economy grew last year, Silver noted.

“We’re in a really good place here in the Yukon, in spite of the chaos that COVID brings,” Silver said. “We had the best growth in Canada.”

That assertion came in the face of the suffering travel and tourism sectors, along with hospitality and accommodations.

It also suggested that Silver was glossing over the glaring problems with housing, and many hundreds of Yukoners unable to find doctors, among other issues.

He didn’t show the same propensity when he discussed the so-called opioid crisis that saw multiple deaths again in 2021. (On Nov. 26, the Yukon Coroner’s Service reported 21 lost lives due to toxic illicit drug use since Jan. 1 of last year, with more deaths currently under investigation.)

Silver pointed to the establishment of rural health-care hubs and the improvement they have brought to the communities, particularly in mental-health services.

More work is needed, he said, but there are now more than 20 workers, where there used to be two.

“Those are major improvements.”

Silver also touched on the historic flooding in the southern Yukon during the past summer. He still sounded astounded that such a “100-year flood” could occur so soon after the 2007 flooding had been awarded the same sobriquet.

“What a season,” he said. “Climate change is in there, with two 100-year floods seen twice in the last two decades.

“It was so powerful to see it. It could have been very devastating.”

Looking to the future, Silver said he is focused on seeing the improvement to social services and health care that implementing the Putting People First policies will bring.

He is also focusing on tackling climate change and growing the economy.

The premier said he is intent on continuing to improve the relationships between the government and Yukon First Nations via avenues such as the Yukon Forum. He revived those gatherings in 2017 after they had lapsed under former premier Darrell Pasloski’s 2011-16 Yukon Party regime.

“There’s a lot of work ahead, and we have to sponsor the right projects,” Silver said. “The future looks good.”

@TMYK "The department actively hid the incident" - How would you know, are you some kind of insider? That's quite the accusation against department of Education staff! I find it ironic that the YP accused the Liberals of not knowing what was going in the department and now their exact defense seems to be that they didn't know what was going in the department when they were in power. Surely even a staunch YP guy like yourself must see the irony as well.

"The Libs and the department only had the pedophile fired because of pressure from the public and the YP" - Why are you lying? The pedophile was fired in Nov. 2019 but the first CBC story (nevermind the YP jumping on board later) came in July of 2021. So what pressure was there before 2019? This whole thing is an issue BECAUSE they didn't tell anyone about him for 2 years - but he was long gone. Just in case someone reading this doesn't know who to believe, here is a link to the story confirming my timeline: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/hidden-valley-yukon-rcmp-timeline-1.6249866

"Were more children abused because of the department and the Libs? Yes." -BS. The pedophile was gone as soon as the the first parent came forward in 2019. So how were more children abused by him? Was he abusing them at his house or something? If you have information that no one else knows about, you should be going to the police instead of posting it here.

It was under the YP time in office when the first incident happened back in 2014-2015. If they had gotten rid of him then, none of this would ever have happened. This is especially true for Brad Cathers who was both MLA for the area and Minister of Justice. How could he have known nothing?

@Roy Do you know that the govt & medical mafia define unvaccinated as anyone who is up to 14 days past the 3rd booster? So what this means for your reference of ICU unvaccinated, is that they are really vaccinated all the way up to their third shot. Probably in ICU from vaccine injury or cytokine storm from exposure to the virus. These people are not truly unvaccinated. The ones who choose not to be experimented on are actually very healthy & thriving.
Soon there will be a new culling at the govt for all those who have not gotten the 3rd shot. Fun times in clown world.

They don't seem to be aware of the untold millions in road work coming into the Territory or the price of copper by itself. What do they think about?

@Snowman. Nice try. The department actively hid the incident. They didn’t inform parents, the Minister at the time or the general public. The Libs and the department only had the pedophile fired because of pressure from the public and the YP. Did the Libs fire anyone responsible for hiding the information? No. Did they do any investigations before the YP put pressure on them? No. Were more children abused because of the department and the Libs? Yes.

Dear Roy - Most people are unable to engage the process of reasoning. They respond emotionally through feelings which they then advance as fact. These are attempts to control their world by attacking the things that make them uncomfortable. They jealously guard their belief system lest it destroy their sense of self, the identity with which they have come to understand the world around.

They are provoked at the thought of being wronged. It is the nature of such opinion platforms to advance opinion over facts. Don’t worry about it and don’t respond to it. It is the essence of monkey’s to monkey around making monkey noises. When you respond to their provocations you have figuratively given the monkey a banana.

Do not feed the monkeys!

On the farmers who were dragged from there homes and killed because the people were told it was the farmers fault food costs were too high. @TMYK you are joking right? The sexual abuse started in 2014-15 but the Liberals only started in power around Dec.2016 or Jan.2017. So under the Yukon Party when the first 'incidents' happened, it was swept under the rug and the pedophile was allowed to stay working at the school. I dare say that is far from laughable.

As for the reports, the Liberals hired a lawyer to do one out of the how many...4? 5? reports. Do you not trust the police or the ombudsman in writing their own reports? And if you think they will all be soft on the liberals, consider this; Annette King who is the Child Advocate is writing a report.

The Liberals messed up by not communicating in a timely manner on this but at least the pedophile was immediately turfed under their watch and not allowed to continue working with our children for many years to come as happened under the Yukon Party from 2014-2016.

Easy to fudge numbers. It is like allowing the mafia to conduct a crime study and then out right believing we need no more police because the mafia says it's safe. Hey BJ

You guys keep stepping up to the plate and striking out.
NDP? Me? You mean the party that has zero chance of ever getting into power here so therefore can promise the world during a campaign - knowing they’ll never have to actually follow through. Yeah, no thanks.

They’re ok as an opposition party to criticize those in power - at least in that role they have a smidgen of credibility. They should vet their candidates better though…

The YP pretends that they are effective opposition - but all their criticisms fall flat because they just accuse the Liberals of doing exactly what the YP did when they were in power. Then they trade juvenile text messages amongst themselves like a bunch of gossipy teenage girls in junior high and embarrass the territory with their behavior.

So no BJ I am not an NDP. Again you are wrong with your assumptions - and like others on here you should let this mistake trigger some self defection about what other erroneous assumptions you are making.
But I doubt, based off what you’ve posted, that you have the insight to do that.

Joe, if you think the Liberal pensions will be bad, just check and see how large of a pension the career politicians in the Yukon Party are getting! Brad Cathers and Scott Kent likely have massive ones now and are laughing all the way to the bank. Currie Dixon will now have one as big as any of the Liberals even though he has already gotten rich from a lifetime of working for government and doesn't need it.

Speaking of which, I heard he just bought a second house out on Marsh Lake. Must be nice to have a solid pension plus 2 houses and a few trucks before the age of 40! I guess the lesson is that if you want to get rich quick, you just need to make a career of working for government like Currie.

I just don't see it. I don't see a great deal of positivity right now. We're not even starting to see the effects of the poorly planned and thought out vaccine mandate yet. And you know that the 'crats aren't going to back down on that, and they're going to keep pushing the issue and burying one badly thought out and poorly executed smoke and mirrors show with another.
We're going to start seeing YG middle managers retiring early and leaving, because they're the ones who have to answer to the crats for why things aren't happening because of decisions they made. Then what happens when seasonal staff are supposed to return in spring. Oh yeah.... we're also going to jeopardize our own supply chain by demanding that unvaccinated American truckers become vaccinated to allow them to continue doing business with Canada.
There's also some pretty strong hints coming from the federal health minister that a mandate will happen for the general population soon. Sorry Sandy, don't share your positivity.

Sandy didn't need to call an election.
In fact he threw the territory into a state of emergency and shut down the economy then a week later called an election forcing people to go door to door.

If that isn't political opportunism then I don't know what is.
It blew up in his face.
He lost his Health Minister and 3 other MLAs.
He lost his majority.
He ended up in a coalition with the NDP implementing their platform.
This one decision by Sandy Silver to call an unnecessary election last spring is the defining political moment in the Yukon for the entire year of 2021.

Everything from March onward can be traced back to this foolish and politically motivated decision.
Every talking point of Sandy can be entirely identified as hypocritical due to this decision (we only follow the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer...Really? Did he tell you to call a snap election a week after you increased restrictions and declared a State of Emergency?).

This one decision will have impacts on this territory for years as we now have rent control followed by a significant amount of evictions along with many other NDP policies being implemented.

You would think the the Whitehorse Star, if they actually wanted to provide analysis beyond snark, would maybe provide a bit of analysis on this one decision by him.

Any political analysis of 2021 that does not look at why Sandy called the snap election when he did and the results of the snap election on the future of the territory is severely lacking and a disservice to Yukoners from a journalistic perspective.

It appears that we have reached the level of public angst that has caused a new direction in messages from the governments. Trudeau has also shifted gears and is speaking positively about our futures in light of the pandemic and resultant job losses and the finacial impacts to many hundreds of thousands of Canadians who are fed up with government's draconian methods.
We've rounded the corner. Things are getting better. We're winning the battle against COVID. There will be programs to help those financially impacted. And on and on with zero evidence to support these claims.
We are also at a time and place where the dichotomy of the labour force is in a bright light for all to see the difference between well paid government workers and the private sector operators that have been shuttered as a result of government policy. Remember: we're all in this together.
I hope there is a detailed review of the CERB and its many failures before another attempt is made to off-set the financial problems being experienced by Canadians of all ages.
Also missing from this story is the future date when the MLAs meet the requirement for their pension programs to qualify.

With your government taking Yukon $352 million into debt with no path on how to pay it back other than increasing taxes on every one. Creating more poor people who can't afford to live.

With political mismanagement of government departments and not giving proper direction to staff on where we are going in the Yukon resulting in many failures in our Yukon government services in these areas:

We are absolutely reliving the darkest chapter in Canada’s history, the subjugation of our entire population...less the special ones.

I had someone read this to me, seems the Yukon Premier and I have something in common.
If what he says is actually true Vs. political obligation speak?
Then I might pursue a new career as a NASCAR driver in Brandonland.
The fourth Reich must fall, even I can see that necessity.

In Alberta today (Jan 7) in the ICU

vaccinated ICU patients = 12
unvaccinated = 48

20% of their population is unvaccinated - yet the unvaccinated take up 80% of the ICU beds...things that make you go Hmmmmmmmm

Can anyone explain why the unvaccinated are the ones taking up the ICU beds? What makes them so special?
If covid is only a cold or flu and that is only dangerous to the old and sick (who you say should be the only ones needing vaccines and restrictions) then why oh why are the ICU beds occupied by unvaccinated patients?

By the way - the majority of the covid ICU patients are in the 50 to 70 age range... yep.... that's your age range. Sorry.
https://www.alberta.ca/stats/covid-19-alberta-statistics.htm

You guys should count yourselves lucky that we live in the Yukon - the silence from the government about stats (which is stupid by the way - they should post all the same details as the other areas of the country) - well at least this allows you to make up conspiracies to trade amongst your fellow friends of the fringe 5%.
That is as long as you don't take the time to look at the posted stats from outside our little corner. That will ruin your mood.

Hey Clint, If you actually looked into it, you would realize that Yukon's daycare program came into place well before the federal one. I know you really want to credit Trudeau instead of Silver, but it is what it is.

Yukon is an Economic Success Story on Jan 7, 2022 at 7:49 pm

The Yukon was one of only TWO jurisdictions in the country to grow its economy last year. That is definitely an accomplishment.

As proof of this achievement, one only needs to look at this comment section with its conservative commenters twisting themselves into pretzels trying to explain this away and claim the economy is actually bad or that it's the federal Liberals that are making our economy so great etc etc.

Ask yourself this, how many people do you know currently looking for work but unable to find any? Literally everyone I know is working flat out right now in the private sector (aside from the service industry currently dealing with pandemic restrictions). If anyone is not working right now, they simply don't want to work.

It's odd how the myth persists that conservatives are best at driving the economy or paying down debt when it's demonstrably not the case here or federally.

Keep the economy running hot Mr. Premier!

The 5% minority is angry. The 5% minority thinks they are smarter than the other 95% - that's a bold statement.

BozoJoe this one is for you:

let's take a thousand people that are vaccinated
and one hundred people who are not

1000 vaxxed
100 not

Let's say 20 vaccinated people need to be hospitalized for covid
And only 10 of the unvaxxed need to be in hospital
20 vaxxed in hospital vs 10 unvaxxed

Your spongebrain would tell you that you have twice the chance of being hospitalized with covid if you are vaxxed!! 20 vaxxed vs 10 unvaxxed!!
What you are missing is the final step of that calculation - in the above example 2% of vaccinated people ended up in hospital vs 10% of unvaxxed

20 out of 1000 is 2%
10 out of 100 is 10%

That's the step a lot of you internet geniuses are missing. The majority of Canadians are vaccinated now. Since Omicron is causing breakthrough covid in vaccinated people the majority of covid cases are in the vaccinated - all that says is that omicron is doing a good job of getting past the vaccine.

It does not mean you have a higher chance of getting covid if vaccinated - if you think that, you need to go back to school.

The liberals outlawed conversion therapy, extortion and bullying are illegal also unless you are a current sitting premier and the prime minister…no vax, no job, no access to tax payer paid for facilities, no access to EI and liquor stores and the weed stores… how long before they are banning people from grocery stores and buying gas or diesel ????

Sandy is possibly the worst leader we've had since Pat Duncan. The Liberals got the votes they did because Silvers has been importing Ontarians by the 100's and Trudeaus refugee's. 7000 newcomers without housing, many without jobs. We have a great Guaranteed Income program in the Yukon. It's call Welfare.. ummm..ok.. rebranded to Social Assistance. The economy is.. well..the future is looking good? If your looking at politician's bank accounts. Hey..if the future is looking that good, how about paying for my hearing aids? Oh.. and while you are at it, how about paying for senior drugs. Not the 50 year old ones, gov covers those. I mean the ones the specialists give to keep a person alive? And will ya' stop promoting programs that kill people? You are responsible for Terry.

I forgot, ‘The future looks good,’ premier says of 2022". Yeah, for him with his incredible generous teachers pension and his huge Premier's pay and later pension. The strange thing about Prime Ministers and Premiers, financial wise they always come out smelling like a rose win or lose. While the rest of us suffer from their screw ups.

At least 21 opioid deaths and possibly more last year vs 15 total deaths in the last two years over covid. And no solution for either problem. Nor any solution in sight. Hope Silver and his Libs aren't doing a happy dance.
“We were finishing up vaccines before the rest of Canada got started,” Silver boasted. The vaccination scam turned out to be a dud. Most covid cases are among the vaccinated.
Silver also pointed to the Yukon’s economy, which is thriving in most ways compared to the rest of Canada. How come we the citizens didn't know about the thriving economy? And how come so many Yukoners can't afford rent? Let alone trying to find a rental accommodation?
Silver is also focusing on tackling climate change and growing the economy. How about forgetting climate change for awhile and focus on growing the economy? So far the climate change program has taken away economical growth.
And finally, Silver attended the demolition of a former residential school in Power Post, B.C. Lovely, very nice. Does this mean now we can put the residential school thing to rest? Because for me - a residential school survivor - is kinda tired of the whole thing.
So, am I optimistic about the future direction the Libs are taking the Yukon? I'll give you 3 guesses and the first two don't count.

I'm fly-in-fly out worker who lost their job because of the mandates. The future does not look good. You do this to us, after working through the last 2 years of the pandemic while others stayed at home and collected CERB. This, after being deemed an 'essential' worker. It must be nice knowing that the 'pandemic' has magically disappeared now myself and others are unemployed for refusing to undergo genetic therapy disguised as a vaccine.

Forced to Comply on Jan 7, 2022 at 3:27 pm

What a joke, this loser has no clue what he is doing. Flooding twice, how about this coming season? We have record snow already piling up, are you thinking in advance and preparing for more flooding? Unlikely. You're too smug and arrogant to think that way. Vaccine roll out is nothing to pat your own back over. I resent your mandate and only complied as I have a mortgage to pay in this ridiculous housing market. The divisiveness and destruction of the actual private sector is disgusting and the only reason our "economy" grew is because of government spending, welcome to communist Yukon! You have destroyed this Territory with poor policy and lack of accountability in your government.

What about the elephant in the room Silver?
You fired scores of public servants for exercising their choice of not being vaccinated.
They and their families are languishing trying to make ends meet not being eligible for EI.
You had the option of giving them covid rapid tests, like many including the Calgary police do.
You and yours are heartless.
