FONDLY REMEMBERED – Flags are being flown at half-mast at the Canada Games Centre (CGC) today to honour Kelly Patrick (above), a swim instructor who died Thursday.
Kelly Patrick's enthusiasm for swimming and just being in the water was evident whether she was playing Fishy In The Middle with a group of toddlers or leading a seniors' aquafit class.
Kelly Patrick's enthusiasm for swimming and just being in the water was evident whether she was playing Fishy In The Middle with a group of toddlers or leading a seniors' aquafit class.
Today, the swim instructor and lifeguard of more than 20 years with the city is being remembered as "a larger than life” figure who passed that enthusiasm on to her many students.
Patrick died last night. The cause has not been made public.
Flags are being flown at half-mast at the Canada Games Centre (CGC) today.
The pool at the recreation centre will remain closed today to give her co-workers time to take in the news. A counsellor with the Employees Assistance Program is also on-hand to assist employees at the CGC.
Linda Rapp, the city's director of community and recreation services, said this morning Patrick's passing is a huge loss for the entire community.
"She was treasured by so many people,” said Rapp, who was already working for the city when Patrick started working at the old Whitehorse Lion's Pool off Fourth Avenue.
Most parents in Whitehorse who have kids who were in swimming lessons were likely taught to swim at some point by Patrick, whether it was at the former Lion's Pool or at the CGC.
"She loved her job,” Rapp said as she recalled Patrick seeming to remember the names of every child she had taught to swim.
Patrick would see kids she taught years later and still remember them, Rapp said.
While Patrick brought her enthusiasm to the "whole range” of swimmers in the pool, Rapp said, "her joy and passion was with the kids.”
She brought enthusiasm to all her classes, said Rapp.
She remembered Patrick up on the deck of the pool making all the motions to instruct fun aquafit classes.
Patrick was part of the transition from the downtown lane pool to the large aquatic centre in 2002 which includes the lane pool, leisure pool, lazy river and so many other features Whitehorse residents now expect.
"That was huge,” Rapp said.
Patrick's excitement for the new facility was evident.
As the facility grew into the Canada Games Centre with the flexihall, running track, arenas and field house, among other features, Patrick and her two boys became a big part of the entire recreation complex, Rapp said.
"Kelly's vibrance and impact on the community cannot be understated,” Rapp said.
"She had such positive relationships with so many people who knew her through swimming programs and lessons. She was synonymous with the pool. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family, friends and co-workers.”
Patrick had been on a short leave from work when she died.
Rapp was at the CGC with staff today, and she said workers were supporting one another.
"It's hard,” she said, noting that while memorial plans have not yet been made, there will likely be an event for city staff to celebrate Patrick's life and a public opportunity of some sort for city residents to remember the long-time swim instructor.
Patrick is survived by her two sons.
Family from Outside were making travel arrangements to come to the territory.

I am so sorry to hear of Kelly's passing. I knew Kelly when she had just arrived in the Yukon (1990), brimming with life and vitality, as she always did. I spent a weekend with her and her then-beau Michael skiing in Juneau. We had a fantastic time and we were all just so impressed with Kelly's vivaciousness and clear vision of what she wanted out of life, namely working in fitness with children, and having children! Her love for her boys was apparent from miles away. And she gave so much encouragement and goodwill to so many. God rest your soul Kelly. We are richer for having had you in our lives.

COW: I'd venture to say that there is not a soul in the entire city of Whitehorse that opposes this. That said I would really like to see how fast we can cut through the red tape and BS and get this done.

Kelly's mum and I were together in Victoria when we received the incomprehensible news. Kelly had such a beautiful spirit. As the Beatles sang, All you need is love. Kelly's love for her family, friends and students will go on forever in the love and forgiveness we show one another. Kelly, I know you are still shining like the sun.
Love always from Auntie Jenny

I'm so sorry to hear the news. Kelly was my first swimming instructor. She was always so enthusiastic and vibrant. It was easy to see she loved her job. I feel so sorry for her family. I support the idea of naming the aquatic centre after her.

I was terrified of water before Kelly taught me to swim. She was patient and let me take my time.
While I am still not a strong swimmer without her help I would probably still be afraid of water to this day.
Rest in peace, Kelly- you were the best swimming instructor! Your laughter, smile and great sense of humor will be missed so much!!

Kelly was simply "A RAY OF SUNSHINE!" Everyone who met Kelly was left with a huge smile on their faces and some still chuckling. She was such a free spirited woman who loved her boys, and her children that she taught each day. Kelly, you touched many hearts and I wish we spent more time with each other. The most memorable memory that will stay with me is the day Kelly came into the store wearing mismatched boots. I asked "Do you have the other pair at home?" Chuckling which she replied "Yes I do." "Each boot belongs to my boys". I am honoured to have known Kelly and will miss her dearly.
My sympathies and Condolences to all her family and friends.

Kelly always told me and my kids that they were the best and I was so pleased that someone else saw it too. Reading everyone's words above I see that she was more fabulous than I even thought. She knew that everyone's kids were the best things to walk the planet. I feel so sad for the kids who won't have a chance to swim with Kelly. I feel so sad for her family and for her co-workers. And I am so grateful to have known her and to know that she left a ripple of love that has spread so far and wide in our community. I'll miss you, Kelly. Peace.

"There is no deeper sorrow than the loss of a child".
It is still hard to comprehend this incredible tragedy. The outpouring of love and support that my sister and her husband will feel today when they arrive in Whitehorse will truly help them at this unbelieveably difficult time. For Kelly's sons Baron and Rainor, her brother Greg, nieces Samantha and Erica and the rest of her Family our heartfelt sympathy to each of you.
One very special woman has been taken far too early in her life. Rest in peace, Kelly.

Jerry and Wendy Patrick: Kelly's Parents on Mar 9, 2014 at 5:31 am
We have been overwhelmed by the love and support we have received by phone, card, e-mail....and public news and display.
Life was never easy for Kelly. She was born prematurely with weak muscle tone and poor coordination....but with such a strong independent spirit, such a drive to get going in life, shaking the bars of her playpen to get out!
Sadly though her Grade One teacher pinpointed her future educational challenges, "That child would give anything to sit still and pay attention, but her nervous system won't let her..." And it never could.
So her gifts never shone in school settings where focus was the key. In 1989 she realized she needed a new, free life and drove her car with Lindsey Russell all the way to Whitehorse. There, her unique unfettered gifts had the fresh clean air and space to thrive and bloom. She discovered that she was born to teach little ones....actively!
Kelly swam "like a fish" so her job at the Pool was made for her....and became her cherished career. Her sparkling, up-beat personality, boundless energy, enthusiasm, hilarious sense of humor were only exceeded by her love she felt for every child whose life she touched....
She never knew she was a hero...
She was everything she could ever be...
She could fly higher than an Eagle
She was the wind beneath our wings....
Love to you all,
Kelly's Mum and Dad
We will be in Whitehorse this evening.

We are so sad. Kelly was a wonderful young woman who in her teenage years, in Kamloops, was a favourite babysitter of our daughter, Jenna. Our hearts go out to her boys, parents, brother and all of her good friends.

The sad news of Kelly's death has reached my family here in SE Asia. Our hearts open to this sorrow. Kelly has touched so many lives. Over the decades I have taken many students to the CGC for lessons, Kelly has always been a welcoming and warm beacon. She taught my son his first rounds of swimming lessons. I appreciated her, not only her strong ability to teach swimming skills, but also for her ability to do it with humour and playfulness. She will be greatly missed.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Kelly in the early 90's at the Whitehorse Lion's pool and then continue to work with Kelly at the beautiful Canada Games Pool. Kelly was full of energy and laughter. I was fortunate to be invited by the City of Whitehorse to facilitate Vertical Water Training courses and workshops for the team of instructors. Kelly completed her CALA Certification in the Group Aquafitness Specialty and the Healing Waters: Aquatic Post Rehabilitation Specialty. Kelly also integrated aqua kick box into her classes to motivate and inspire community members. Kelly's sense of humour permeated everything she did, including her classes on deck. During the courses and workshops that I facilitated, I often would burst into uncontrollable laughter at a comment Kelly would make. I certainly enjoyed watching Kelly teach on deck. Kelly created a a welcoming environment. She encouraged people of all fitness levels to do their best and to keep on moving! I will miss Kelly. Every time I arrived in Whitehorse, I would be greeted with a warm, generous hug and a huge smile. Kelly certainly showed her love of life and shared her unique approach to living with everyone who crossed her path. We definitely need more people like Kelly in this world. She was not afraid to let the love flow and the laughter spring forth. Kelly, I will miss your wonderful smile and your vibrant spirit. You deserve to be happy, serene and to rest in peace.

Kelly will be remembered by all the parents that had her as an instructor, she will be missed by and always remembered by me and all the parents that took their kids to a lesson with her. I love her she was a true human that understood kids and parents at the same time. Wherever you are now Kelly know that we care for you.

I go to the games center maybe once a year, and there would be Kelly saying, "Hi Susie!". She really made you feel like a friend, not just by remembering your name but by her smile and easy, open manner. This is really hard news. She was special, no doubt about it. The world could use a lot more Kelly Patricks, and now she's gone. Hard to believe.

I will miss Kelly so much. She was the first person to welcome me to the pool and Aquafit class and was my friend.
Kelly was a warm, loving, thoughtful person and a truly gifted instructor. Many days I watched her teaching the little tadpoles and often teased her about being a Mama Duck with her little ducklings.
She enriched our lives. Rest in Peace Kelly, I will miss you.

So sorry to hear such sad news. I worked with Kelly years ago at the Klondike Inn and continued to see her at the pool. She was always such a positive and helpful person. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and her boys at this sad time.

I will always remember Kelly, as a cheerful, friendly person who went out of her way to connect with other people and be helpful and kind. I first met her when I moved up here many years ago, when she worked behind the desk of Peak Fitness in the old days, when Marcello owned it. At the end of a hard days work, there was nothing like Kelly's welcoming smile and words when I came in, to help me feel better, and not quite so alone. I won't forget those kind words you said to me, and that big friendly smile. May God bless you Kelly.

Kelly will be deeply missed by all. Every child in her swim class was made to feel special, she encouraged them and always praised them and let their parents/grandparents know just how special that child was. She was encouraging and entertaining. It is very sad.
