A CHANGE IN DIRECTION – Premier Sandy Silver, Mary Tiesen, the Yukon government’s American sign language interpreter, and Dr. Brendan Hanley are seen left to right at this morning’s weekly COVID-19 news conference.
In a change of philosophy, the Yukon government and territorial health officials are moving to loosen the pandemic health restrictions that so many people have been chafing under.
In a change of philosophy, the Yukon government and territorial health officials are moving to loosen the pandemic health restrictions that so many people have been chafing under.
Premier Sandy Silver and Dr. Brendan Hanley, the chief medical officer of health, announced this morning during the weekly COVID-19 briefing that Grades 10-12 high school students in Whitehorse will be returning to full-time studies in April.
The two men also mentioned further relaxations of the health measures could be in the offing – possibly including expansions of social bubbles and the re-establishment of travel bubbles outside the territory.
Both Silver and Hanley expressed puzzlement that anyone would call the decisions an “about-face” and major change in direction from what they have been saying for months.
“I find that perplexing,” Silver said.
“I’m not sure when that turnabout happened,” Hanley said.
Interestingly, Yukon University students will not be returning to in-person classes until next fall at the earliest.
Hanley said he has heard repeatedly from parents of senior high school students that their children were struggling under the half-day regime.
“We know students learn best in face-to-face learning,” he said.
Hanley said he had weighed the evidence from other jurisdictions that hadn’t imposed such restrictions.
He was satisfied the pandemic health measures were ingrained well enough in Yukoners that it would be safe to return to full-time classroom learning for the rest of the year... which amounts to less than three months. The two-week March break will begin next week.
“We’re very pleased with this,” Silver said.
“This is great news on the surface,” Ted Hupé, the president of the Yukon Teachers’ Association, told the Star early this afternoon.
“However, I have as many details as you do. As soon as I get some more information, I will get back to you.
“So far there is no information as to how this will happen,” Hupé noted.
“There are a lot of logistical and planning hurdles that have to be overcome.
“I know many conversations will be taking place over the next two days.”
The territory’s schools closed after the COVID crisis exploded in the spring of 2020. Since last September, Grades 10-12 students in Whitehorse have been attending class half-time and doing their remaining studies online.
Silver and Hanley offered no details as to when the social bubbles will be expanded.
As for the travel bubbles, Silver and Hanley said an announcement could be coming in May or June. Other than that, not many details were available on that concept either.
Hanley did say the territory would not necessarily simply resume the travel bubble with British Columbia. Instead, everything is on the table, he explained.
Both men continued to emphasize the importance of vaccine uptake all over the territory.
Other than the high schools, any further decrease in restrictions are largely dependent on the rate of immunizations.
According to the government figures, vaccine rates in the central and southwestern regions of the Yukon aren’t as high as they could be (see separate coverage, p. 5). The central region currently features a 44 per cent uptake rate, while the southwest is at 51 per cent.
Neither man wished to discuss that situation in detail this morning, saying they weren’t going to “pit communities against each other.
“It’s not a competition,” Hanley said.
He added that in some cases, the communities were waiting for a second visit from the mobile teams. Hanley expected rates to rise in the coming weeks.
While he and the government won’t commit themselves to a firm benchmark that would have a good chance of establishing so-called herd immunity, Hanley pointed to the 75-per-cent mark as the usual benchmark needed.
He said the government does have interest in the newly-approved vaccine from Johnson&Johnson for use in rural areas.
Its formula is stable and doesn’t require sophisticated techniques for refrigeration.
It’s also a one-dose vaccine, making it more appealing in some ways than the Moderna vaccine currently being offered.
There continue to be no active cases of COVID-19 in the territory.
There will be no COVID-19 briefing next week due to the spring school break. Hanley will not be available, according to spokesperson Pat Living.

@kathy
Clearly you're another flat earth denier of science.
56% of Yukoners have had their first shot, we are leading the nation in that category so clearly we are headed in a favourable direction to lift restrictions. We'll have herd immunity before the snow is all melted. A sense of normalcy is on the horizon.
Try to look beyond your blind hatred (red team bad/blue team good) and look at the actual science.

Spring break was expanded to 2 weeks under the YuCon Party to coincide with AWG/CWG to allow kids to participate and travel.
Believe it or not, not everything is about your wants and needs.

Silver knows he’s losing the election, that's why the about-face. And as someone said last week, how Hanley can look anyone in the eye is beyond the pale. Ignore them-maybe they’ll both go away.

The lack of leadership is pathetic. I expressed vaccine hesitancy as we have been getting mixed information as it appears even if vaccinated we still need to adhere to wearing masks, 14 day isolation upon return, safe 6, etc. When I questioned this I was then attacked by fearful individuals, called an anti-vaxxer and told I was being selfish. This reaction has made me even more hesitant (I am also not an anti-vaxxer, I simply want to know more about the vaccine as there is so much misinformation and people demanding this of me). In my view, they should be giving as much information to us as possible not drip feeding and changing their tune randomly. The fastest vaccine prior to this took 4 years to complete, you can't blame some of us for hesitating and having questions we would like answered first.

Maybe it should be a competition. Put the numbers up and let us participate in them. Sometimes the vaccine is promoted as the end game for this, so why not embrace the urgency.
Of course, sometimes the vaccine is downplayed, as in Hanley is reluctant to commit to a figure for herd immunity, or we still have to see what's happening with variants, or we have to wait for a vaccine for children, all equivocations which might be encouraging procrastination.
But in those brief moments where Silver and Hanley think vaccines are important again, why not get fully engaged with the statistics.

I agree on Mar 11, 2021 at 12:12 pm
I totally agree with More of the Same and At Home in the Yukon. What pray tell is the incentive for those of us that got vaccinated? What is the incentive for those who have not been vaccinated yet? Rapid testing is out there. How about a rapid test upon arrival to Yukon, self isolate for say 3 days and then another rapid test. If all clear, you’re good to go. All you are doing is pissing people off more and more, that is between your outrageous vote-buying gimmicks!

Quoting: “Neither man wished to discuss that situation in detail this morning, saying they weren’t going to “pit communities against each other.”
Actually, you are setting us up for conflicts. First you have incited irrational fear about covid with made up ‘cases’ based on faulty PCR tests that experts say provide way too many false positives. Then you ratchet up the pressure about taking the vaccine by stating the lockdown will remain in place until a 75% threshold has been reached. This is coercion, and it is bound to create conflicts between people. You know darn well that many informed people just won’t take this experimental injection that has not gone through long-term testing.
Fact is, you have no idea what the herd immunity threshold really is, and it may well be that natural herd immunity has already been reached. The reality is that no one is even sick, and yet you are still forcing us into harmful lockdowns to suit your agenda. Your carrot and stick tricks are obvious. You have lost all credibility.

Grades 10-12--not political toys!! on Mar 10, 2021 at 5:47 pm
I want grades 10-12 back in school full time--however, to announce this out of the blue, no notice to teachers, administrators or anybody else, YTA should grieve this. Liberals response is that admin can figure out the logistics of bringing everybody back over spring break. Teachers and students are on a schedule that should play out until end of school year--then have return to school full time in Sept.
Grades 8-9 have been full time so how are you now supposed to schedule that for teachers who teach 10-12 and grade 8-9? What about grade 8 at Wood St--are you putting them back at FH because if it's political votes you're looking for, better do that too!!!! Return the other Wood St programs to their school. And while you're at, let these grade 12's have a real grad this year. They did it without Handley's consent last year anyways--might as well plan an outdoor grad. These ad hoc decisions are driving everybody crazy and not doing anything for your re-elect. I predict a minority government and likely not Liberal.

Sad that high school students are being used to help with electioneering for the Liberals. This decision could have been made long ago.

While we're on the subject, why is "spring" break 2 weeks in winter? There is literally nothing for kids to do except sit around the house for 2 weeks. It's not like we can travel anywhere, the two weeks would have been better spent added on to summer vacation.

Still can't grasp the fact that all this mess is for 0.0005% of Canadians dead.. a survival rate of over 99%. Over 80% were old people who had several other diseases with a compromised immune system.. people are acting as if you're going to drop dead if you sneeze, only thing dead is the economy.

According to the Onion News Network the good doctor and the person who leads the Liberal Party (not Slippery Sandy Silver) were overheard as they left the news conference saying something to the effect of “let them eat cake”.

Yet again Slippery Sandy Silver and Handy Andy Hanley have demonstrated complete arrogance ... we will know what we can do when they feel like telling us - so in the meantime be good little boys and girls and do as you’re told. I am so fed up with Silver and Hanley and their “we are the parent and you are the child” approach ... it is appalling. Please call an election so we can be rid of both of them.

More of the same on Mar 10, 2021 at 2:30 pm
Listened with gritted teeth again to the same pandering. No dates, no details just carry on like good soldiers.
May or June we may get some news about travel bubbles.
What about Yukoners that have been vaccinated? Are we all to wait till the vaccine reluctant step forward? Till the government is satisfied we’re safe?
Many of us have been separated from elderly loved ones in BC, and from our children for a year now.
Some of us are going quietly crazy waiting to be let loose.
Some of us have reoccurring medical travel and no government job that allows us 2 weeks to relax on sick leave upon return.
Enough is enough!

I applaud the relaxation of the rules. As far as interfacing with the outside world, I think we should draw the line at vaccinations. I suggest that those that have been vaccinated should be able to come into the Yukon from the outside. I think an exemption should be given for those who cannot be vaccinated for REAL medical reasons, and for children who cannot yet be vaccinated. If we take this approach, people will see real benefit to being vaccinated, and we will get more cooperation with vaccination programs. Now that there are open vaccination appointments, this kind of vaccination privilege is reasonable.

What way is the political liberal wind bellowing today??? Last week we were put into another 90 days on EMG.
Now we are into removal of restrictions.
How is it possible for 90 days of EMG but remove restrictions according to Yukon and Federal EMG acts. This makes no sense at all other than liberals wanting to have full control over how we live.
Yukoners do you want that?
Are the governments using EMG acts to take control of Yukoners?
