Broken Social Scene has had to cancel its planned concert for the Yukon Arts Centre’s Sept. 10 Birthday Bash celebration at Shipyards Park.

Instead, the centre will bring up the Canadian band The Strumbellas, along with the previously announced Serena Ryder, also a Canadian performer.

“Music has always been a pillar of the Yukon Arts Centre’s annual programming, and we feel it is very fitting to kick off our anniversary season with an iconic line-up of artists at Shipyards Park and thanks to a special grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage it is free for everyone to enjoy,” Casey Prescott, the centre’s CEO, said this week.

The Strumbellas are Simon Ward (lead vocals/acoustic), Jeremy Drury (drums/percussion), Isabel Ritchie (strings), Jon Hembrey (guitar) and Darryl James (Close Kicks - bass).

The Canadian collective had been riding high in 2019 on the success of its fourth album, Rattlesnake, with performances across the globe, including festival slots and a rendition of lead single Salvation on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Their album, We Still Move on Dance Floors, won a 2014 Juno Award in the Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group category.

On April 21, 2016, the band members were the featured performers on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The band’s song Spirits won the 2017 Juno Award for Single of the Year.

Singer-songwriter Ryder is a multi-instrumentalist who is well-known for her soulful and emotional sound.

She has won seven Juno Awards, a Canadian Screen Award and a SOCAN Award.

Ryder also received the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour from Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2021. Her 2012 hit, Stompa, earned triple platinum in Canada.

She will perform at 5 p.m., followed by The Strumbellas at 6:30 p.m.

Throughout the day, there will be family arts and crafts activities, with roaming performers and performances by Tiny Islands Brass Band, stilt walker Nikolai, Local Boy, Rising Sun Singers, Soir de Semaine, B-Trippers with Dave Haddock and the Vanstones.

Food trucks will also be available throughout the day. The festival hours will be 11a.m. to 8 p.m.

“We are so excited to be to able thank the Yukon community for supporting the Yukon Arts Centre for the last 30 years by having this very special day for everyone to enjoy,” said Michele Emslie, the centre’s director of programming.
