Some schools may face disruptions, YG concedes

Masking and physical distancing will not be required in schools nor early learning and child care centres, the Yukon government confirmed this morning.

By Whitehorse Star on August 17, 2022

Masking and physical distancing will not be required in schools nor early learning and child care centres, the Yukon government confirmed this morning.

Nor will students riding the school buses have to wear face coverings.

Most students will return to classes on Monday of next week.

Those include pupils in Dawson City, where the school year had originally been intended to start tomorrow. Multiple construction projects have delayed the year’s start.

“The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone, including children,” Dr. Sudit Ranade, the chief medical officer of health, said in a statement.

“Kids need to be able to socialize, learn, play and interact with their peers in order to get the most out of their learning environment – both in school and in early learning and child care programs, which stay open year-round.

“It is more important than ever for students to return to a near-normal school routine to support their mental health and well-being,” Ranade added.

“Good hand and respiratory hygiene, regular cleaning and disinfection, and staying home when sick continue to play an important role in keeping these spaces safe.”

Parents and caregivers, Ranade said, “should use common sense to determine whether a child is well enough to attend school, early learning and child care programs or other activities.

“Children who are ill, regardless of symptoms, should stay home to rest and recover and avoid infecting others.

“Observe and talk to your child frequently to see if they have new or worsening symptoms.”

The territory is shifting from the acute stage of the pandemic to “learning to live” with the virus, he said.

“We have the opportunity to make decisions based on our personal risk. The decision to wear a mask at school, on the bus or in any public setting, is a personal one.

“Students, teachers and staff should consider their personal risk and take steps to protect themselves. I encourage everyone to respect each other’s personal prevention measures,” Ranade said.

Vaccination remains the best way to protect against severe outcomes from COVID-19, he stressed.

“I encourage all Yukoners aged six months and over to stay up to date with their vaccines.”

Vaccination appointments can be booked online or by contacting local health centres.

Ranade said he will continue to work closely with the Department of Education and Yukon Communicable Disease Control to monitor the impacts of COVID-19, and other communicable diseases, and update recommendations and guidance as needed.

“Each community and place of learning is unique,” the top doctor said.

“By working together, we can support the best interests of our children, schools and communities.”

Many of those points were re-emphasized during a media briefing held this morning by Ranade and Nicole Morgan, the deputy minister of Education.

“Kids need to be able to socialize,” Ranade told reporters, adding a balanced approach to controlling COVID-19 can ensure that goal is met. Medical practitioners are finding the virus remains “highly transmissible but far less severe.”

He later noted, “There are going to be people who choose to wear a mask as a personal choice; it is an acceptable choice, and it is important that be respected.”

Morgan said the overall goal is to “provide safe, inclusive, supportive environments” in the schools, which she described as “an immense challenge.”

The “optimal” environment, she said, is for students to learn in person in schools, not virtually from home.

At the same time, she said, “we acknowledge there may be interruptions to operations of schools.”

Depending on circumstances, Morgan said, “we may have to look at short-term, targeted remote learning; our intent will be for the least amount of time possible.”

Educational facilities are controlled environments, she noted. “Schools are different environments than, say, Walmart.”

All schools’ ventilation systems have been inspected, Morgan said, and 397 HEPA filter units (high-efficiency, particulate-absorbing filters) have been installed system-wide.

Precautions such as hand hygiene will be followed, and students showing any symptoms of illness will be asked to stay home.

Nevertheless, absences are the norm at the start of every school year, Morgan said.

“We do expect to see some higher numbers of student absenteeism. We expect COVID will be a part of the mix.

“We expect schools will be ready to pivot to remote learning if needed.” That would be done on an individual basis only, she added.

The pandemic has taken a toll on students, staff and parents, the deputy minister pointed out.

“Our approach is similar to where we left off at the end of the (2021-22) school year.”

A serious change in the public health situation could affect plans, she added.

“Right now, nothing has changed on that front.”

As for the staffing scenario, Morgan said, “When staff have to stay away because they are ill, it can create the potential for some schools to have a reduction in their operational capacity ... our priority is that learning continue for the students.”

The department is attempting to fill a variety of positions throughout the system, particularly in some communities, where a shortage of housing only exacerbates the challenges.

To help ensure that learning continues, Morgan said, the department has teachers on call, and is trying to recruit more of them.

When all options have been exhausted, “that is when we have discussions with the school community and the school council.”

Certified staff members specializing in such areas as counselling and reading recovery could also help deal with the problem of absent teachers, she added.

Ultimately, she said, “we need to be able to have enough staff on site to ensure we are welcoming students to a safe environment.”

Generally, Morgan noted, the two-year recovery plan has included tracking COVID’s impacts on learning and on students’ mental wellness.

She pointed out that students who were in Grade 5 in 2019 are now entering secondary school.

“Our high school staff will be working directly with those students,” she said.

@Jeff

Did you just say “the truckers saved us”?
That is the funniest thing I’ve heard in a year of funny things!

All that those fringe truckers accomplished (and yeah they were the fringe minority of truck drivers) is embarrass themselves. They achieved nothing. That’s why they are still in Ottawa trying to remain relevant as the world passes them by! They couldn’t pay their rent on their HQ this month - oops they got evicted.

And I like how you say increased deaths are from the vaccine - yet someone else here “heard” that it will be 5 years from now before these vaccines activate to ruin our immune systems. I’d love to know the science behind that line of thinking.

You guys must be so excited - just struggle and be unsuccessful for 5 more years and then you get to inherit the earth.

And for George - try to keep up - I don’t like the Liberal party. They suck.
You were wrong about that despite being so sure. Maybe look at what other ideas you are so sure about.

I feel sorry for you Roy. Why even bother commenting here? You parrot the same msm talking points everytime you are on here. And, it seems like you always try and boil it down to loyalty to a political party. You try and fit everyone in a "Left-wing" or a Right-wing" box because you cannot think outside of their paradigm. Your physche has been captured.
They are playing people against each other to control, exploit, and distract us from the real problem.

You know what they say? It's ok for you to believe what you believe. BUT, it is NOT ok for you to force me to believe what you believe.

There is a lot of force being used with regards to covid and vaccines. On both sides of that fence.

It's the math on Aug 19, 2022 at 6:35 pm

@jeff bikaboom, you got one thing right. You are correct in saying that unvaccinated people are not having adverse reactions to vaccines.

Jeff Bikaboom on Aug 18, 2022 at 8:40 pm

@ again, with the math

"But there still seems to be those that look at those numbers, and insist that vaccinations 'cause' deaths and cases. Sigh"

Proportionally there are more vaccinated people dying and being hospitalized from covid than unvaccinated. If 85 percent of people are vaccinated and 92 percent of hospitalizations are of vaccinated people, then we are not seeing the efficacy that the "experts" and "science" promised. We are seeing negative efficacy. That means people are worse off if vaccinated. The vaccines are not 95 percent effective, they are not just ineffective, their effectiveness is negative. i.e. a failure.

A quote from this article:
"I encourage all Yukoners aged six months and over to stay up to date with their vaccines.”
Why? The vaccines are not working. Many recent Canadian court cases prove they shots were never effective to begin with, and that this information was known during the entire time they were promoted as effective. Get off the horse, the horse is dead.

The unvaccinated are taking up less beds in hospitals, dying less, and suffer zero adverse reactions to covid vaccines. Why isn't this being promoted?

According to the government directory (by department). Not all of those are teachers or former teachers, but surely there are enough that can be re-assigned to working in the classroom so that the kids can be assured of having classroom learning this year? And no additional cost, since all of these folks are already being paid.

Up 33 Down 15

again, it's the math on Aug 18, 2022 at 1:35 pm

if 0% of the population is vaccinated, then 100% of the cases and deaths will be among the unvaccinated. If 90% of the population is vaccinated, a corresponding higher percentage of cases and deaths will be among the vaccinated. That's just the way it is, with math and this virus. But there still seems to be those that look at those numbers, and insist that vaccinations 'cause' deaths and cases. Sigh

@ Roy

"No this is not what Star commentators told me was going to happen. They said all these power grabs were permanent. "

They would have been permanent if the truckers didn't save us. We are not in the clear as the vax pass is transitioning to Digital ID.

"They also told me my immune system should have shut off by now - which would mean I would die pretty quickly - along with 90% of North Americans. "

There is a 30 percent increase in Yukon deaths since the vaccines were rolled out. You can see this in the Yukon Monthly Statistical Review. These numbers are holding strong and not letting up. So much death they are building a larger morgue at the hospital. All provinces show the same thing with higher deaths in the vaccinated. This is why they have been removing the statistics from all of the covid reporting websites. Luckily we have the Wayback Machine to look back at the numbers.

Sad stuff. I am not sure what political rants have to do with it.

At the end of the school year, I would like to see the numbers on teacher attendance. People got really used to working from home, in their Jammie bottoms, not paying for day care, or gas to get to work, or professional clothing, plus, government employee's got their internet bills paid, and got tax deductions for it. That's pretty hard to resist, and if I had had that train to get on, I would be "sick" a lot too. The governmental response to covid has left a lot 'damage'. Seniors, but not just seniors, losing connections with society, withdrawing, others drinking too much, others, drugs. So many lost and wandering now.

That being said, it is well known, not new news, that children need to be "socialized" to be healthy in mind and body. They need friends to love and have fun with, and to the the boundaries of acceptability. The government conveniently ignored this. We were doomed the instant covid stopped being a medical issue and started being a political football. We have a failed grade B actor, a substitute drama teacher, a divisive, black-faced, trying to tell us what to eat, how to think, where to go, where we can't go, and, what to do with a medical issue, then blaming any backlash on.. 'we're just taking medical advice.." hmmm is ArrivCan a medical advice directive? I don't think so. And neither was the damage to society.

Kids need to be able to socialize? No sh**, Sherlock. They also enjoy oxygen and learning to speak properly and playing sports and hugging and living free from hysterical phobia over a flu that won’t kill them and not having strokes and heart attacks. So do all of their parents. You’re not getting away with this unfounded reversal of policy just like that. Those of us who are semiconscious will have no choice but to conclude the implementation of these Draconian mandates was equally unfounded. Don’t let it fizzle to bygones, folks. This ate up 2.5 years of our lives, divided people on each other, pretty much crushed the middle class and maimed and killed countless. Never mind today’s scraps of freedom. Some folks need to answer for taking it away unlawfully.

90% of North Americans are going to die as their immune systems shut down any day now. It was supposed to be last year but I guess it's been postponed - the 5G Bill Gates gene therapy must be just taking it's time.

Remember you're not going to be able to vote for Currie Dixon or Pierre Poilievre as they will have succumbed to the vaccines they got along with the rest of us.

Time to choose a new leader - maybe Romana Didulo? The "queen" who is telling her followers to arrest the police - she seems like your type. She will appreciate the laughable pickup truck parades you like to have.

"Vaccination remains the best way to protect against severe outcomes from COVID-19, he stressed."

Nope. The statistics say otherwise. Even with bias testing that focuses on inflating the unvaccined numbers, the vaccinated are worse off. This was shown quite clearly with the Ontario statistics which were removed July 23rd. Also shown in the Alberta statistics which were removed the same week. Also shown in BC statistics which, last I checked, were in the process of being removed / adjusted.

Lots has changed in the last 2 weeks. It seems the antiscience whack jobs were right all along. It it too obvious to hide anymore. Yet the Canadian government pushes on. The fifth shot was just announced in Quebec. At this point it is beyond sinister.

What was the vaccine uptake for the toddlers? Did it cross the 1.5% mark?

Hopefully the teachers will act with integrity and set an example for the kids moving forward. I suspect there will be a lot of sick days coming up for staff, on account of most teachers are vaccinated.
