Thursday’s high winds had ATCO Electric Yukon crews scrambling to keep the power flowing in some areas.

Multiple unplanned outages and power bumps occurred, mainly due to searing winds and trees contacting power lines, ATCO reported.

The affected areas included the Alaska Highway/Ibex Valley, where crews responding to an outage found a tree on a power line as the culprit.

Crews also found and removed a tree over a line in the Two Mile Road area of the North Klondike Highway, where power had also been disrupted.

Workers encountered similar situations in the Mary Lake subdivision and in Watson Lake.

“We have received reports of power bumps in Porter Creek on Maple Street and Wann Road,” ATCO said Thursday afternoon on social media.

“If you spot a low-hanging power line or downed power line, maintain a safe distance of at least 10 metres.

“Always assume it’s energized and do not attempt to remove trees yourself.”

The windstorm was expected to be followed by snowfall this afternoon in the Whitehorse area, though – consistent with the trend through early 2024 – no major accumulation is anticipated.
