The RCMP are seeking public assistance in locating Freddy Frost in the Old Crow area.
Revised - The search for a missing Old Crow elder continued Tuesday as more resources and people are joining in.
Freddy Frost, the 78-year-old uncle of Vuntut Gwitch’in First Nation Chief Pauline Frost, has been missing for more than a week.
He was last seen on Oct. 10 heading out on a red ATV pulling a red trailer toward Crow Mountain.
His absence was only reported to the RCMP last Saturday.
A detailed update on the search was posted Tuesday evening on the Vuntut Gwitch’in Facebook page.
“Today, a large number of searchers and good weather conditions early in the day allowed a significant land area to be covered in the search for for elder Freddy Frost,” the post said
“A total of 51 personnel were organized into 13 different teams throughout the day, all with different objectives.”
The government said two more Yukon Search and Rescue technical experts joined the search today.
The Yukon RCMP Search and Rescue manager and 11 community members from Fort McPherson, N.W.T. also arrived in Old Crow on a charter to assist with the search effort.
Frost was last seen west of the quarry on Crow Mountain.
Bad weather last Sunday precluded a helicopter search, but since then, a chopper has been used for grid searches near the mountain.
A search co-ordinator has been appointed to organize the searchers and their resources.
With snow on the ground in northern Yukon, snowmobile teams were also assigned search duties. Five teams searched on foot.
Crow Mountain remains closed to travel and hunting as the search continues.
Searchers are encouraged by Frost’s decades of experience with the wilderness and his survival skills, and the red colouring of his ATV and trailer, making them easier to detect from a helicopter.
The First Nations male is described as slender in build, with brown eyes and brown hair.
When last seen, he was wearing a blue and black plaid shirt.
