The City of Whitehorse will temporarily close Main Street and Second Avenue on Saturday to support the Council of Yukon First Nations’ procession to honour those impacted by residential schools.

Saturday is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The procession will begin at 11 a.m. from the Healing Totem near Front Street and will proceed along Main Street, turn north on Second Avenue and continue to Black Street, where the march will end at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.

Bylaw Services will provide traffic control and barriers at intersections along the route.

“Please drive with care, reduce speed, and follow traffic controllers and signage,” the city said Thursday.

Transit services along Second Avenue will be affected during this time.

Commuters should use the bus stops at Second and Shipyards Park, or Second and Hanson/Lambert streets during this time. Buses will be rerouted along Fourth Avenue.

“We thank you for your patience and co-operation to accommodate this closure,” the city said.
