An RCMP special constable had to be extracted from an RCMP aircraft after it crashed Monday at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.
Police were notified of the crash of the Pilatus PC-12 plane at approximately 11:40 a.m.
“One RCMP employee was on board during the crash and they have been extracted safely and are being treated for injuries,” police said shortly after the crash. “Identity of the person involved will not be shared.”
“At this time, police do not believe that criminality is involved, and Yukon RCMP will assist the Transportation Safety Board of Canada as the lead investigating body,” police said.
Board staff were preparing to leave Alberta for Whitehorse later Monday.
Details such as whether the plane was taking off or landing at the time of the crash are part of the investigation, Whitehorse RCMP Const. Carlie McCann told the Star Tuesday.
The airport was temporarily closed due to the emergency.
The pilot’s injuries are non-life-threatening, McCann said.
The badly-damaged aircraft is likely a write-off.
Its loss will not reduce the Yukon RCMP’s ability to fly personnel, in-custody persons or others among northern communities or to and from the terrritory.
“We appreciate the co-operation of the staff at the airport,” McCann said of the emergency.
