Opioids epidemic has cost 14 Yukon lives in 2021

The Yukon opioid epidemic has claimed 14 lives so far this year.

By Whitehorse Star on August 31, 2021

Revised - The Yukon opioid epidemic has claimed 14 lives so far this year.

A report released Tuesday by Heather Jones, the territory’s chief coroner, stated that as of that day, the Yukon has recorded 14 lost lives due to toxic illicit drug use since the New Year’s period.

The report says this doubles the numbers seen “when we last reported at the end of April.

“All of these deaths involved opioids in various formats of fentanyl and in combination with other illicit drugs and/or alcohol.

“The Yukon, like most other Canadian jurisdictions, has suffered greatly under the strain of what has been deemed ‘the opioid crisis’, which found its way to us in the spring of 2016.”

Since that time and to date, 47 individuals – mostly men – in the Yukon have lost their lives to the illicit use of opioids. Eighty-three per cent of those deaths have involved fentanyl.

(A further 10 individuals have died as the result of non-opioid drug overdoses during that time-period. The Yukon has lost 57 lives to drug overdoses since the spring of 2016).

“As is well known, we saw a significant increase in opioid overdose deaths in 2020, with a total of 10 deaths, compared to the four investigated in 2019,” Jones said.

“2021 is already showing a 40-per-cent increase over the 2020 total, and the year will continue for another four months.

“As these numbers continue to grow so to does the burden of grief and unimaginable losses felt throughout our communities,” the coroner added.

“We have seen, many times now, that no part of our society is unaffected. These deaths are occurring in young people barely out of their teens and to those well into their 70s.

“Friends, colleagues, family members – all loved contributors to all of our Yukon communities” the coroner added.

“More and more Yukon families are being left with a devastating reality found in the wake of these lost lives. This is a pain that is now close to so many of us.”

The Yukon Coroner’s Service, she pointed out, “is mandated to speak for the dead; to give voice to our losses and bring to light messaging that can make a difference.

“The hope continues that we will all take the time to listen and really hear what these deaths are telling us.

“May we find the wisdom and compassion to support well-thought-out initiatives and to embrace struggling individuals; and together confront this continuing crisis,” the coroner concluded.

Bronte Renwick-Shields, the executive director of the Blood Ties Four Directions Centre, said her organization “is deeply saddened to hear of another seven Yukoners lost to overdose.

“The overdose deaths for this year have already exceeded those in 2020. We must take urgent action to prevent more overdose deaths; we cannot continue to lose community members to this preventable death,” she said.

“Blood Ties looks forward to the opening of the supervised consumption site in Whitehorse (see story, this page) and recognizes its importance and necessity in addressing this crisis and saving lives.

“We continue to strongly advocate for the expedient implementation of safe supply as one of the most powerful tools we have in combating the overdose crisis,” Renwick-Shields added.

“To those who are looking for support, please reach out.”

The centre’s staff are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and are with the Outreach Van from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. seven nights a week.

“This year alone, the Yukon has lost 14 people to opioid overdoses,” Dr. Brendan Hanley, the territory’s Liberal candidate for the Sept. 20 election, said on his Facebook campaign page.

“Ensuring that federal policy works to improve mental health and addictions supports is a key priority for my candidacy.”

@ Repeat Faction

That is an easy one to answer. Ask any Liberal MP. The Liberals are, and always have been, soft on crime. Harper brought in mandatory sentencing and in the last 6 years these twits have removed them.
I do agree with you. First we have to get rid of most of the left wing judges and also amend our laws "again".

I have been and remain remiss as to why the people that push the deadly dope are not charged with 2nd degree murder.

That new condo development by Helicopter Park will have lovely new neighbours and falling property values.

It all goes along with social assistance, subsidized apartments/housing, unemployment, breakdown of religion, a meaningless life, and childhood trauma. There are no real healers/therapists in Yukon capable of dealing with the injury to the parental image in the deep psyche, and its reconstruction. What happened to the promise of PhDs in trauma counselling, where are the so called 'Medicine Men' and Shamanistic soul retrievers?

The message is quite clear. Residents who don't live downtown -- open your hearts to these afflicted citizens. Downtown residents and businesses -- open your homes and stop complaining.

I find the continued misleading messaging coming from the Coroner's Office, the CMOH, government at large, and their partner NGOs to be very frustrating.

These are drug-related deaths -- which is not at all the same as saying they are "drug overdose deaths". Proving a death is due to a drug overdose is a relatively high bar compared to a finding of "drug-related death".
While it may be true that the decedents died due to an illicit drug overdose, the Coroner's Office has not provided any toxicology data with associated probabilities to support those claims. On its face, It seems highly unlikely that every one of these deaths was primarily due to an illicit drug overdose. These facts make me very skeptical about the Coroner's line.

In any case, the continued scare tactics from the Coroner and the CMOH is not working as evidenced by their own numbers.
What is curious to me is that there is zero acknowledgement by the Coroner of the role of government-mandated Covid-related restrictions on illicit drug use and subsequent drug-related deaths.

So, whats the biggest health emergency in Yukon, Opioid deaths or Covid 19? Police spend years monitoring drug dealers before arrests, Judges let the perps back on the streets with 24 hours, and Socialist government providing free drugs and a nice warm place to do them. What's wrong with this picture?

Yes, these are upstanding members of the community. Forget it no one really cares. Just drop by the Centre for Hope any day and watch what happens - by the way don’t get out of your car.

Seeing as how the Lieberals think this is such a wonderful idea, why doesn’t the government put the safe consumption house in the old library building? This way the Lieberals can be there and enable the drug users even more!

My Opinion on Aug 31, 2021 at 4:31 pm

We are only just over six months into this year and 14 Opioid deaths as well as 10 non Opioid drug overdose deaths. That is 24 in six months, compare that with 9 COVID deaths in a year and a half.

So meanwhile people vaccinated and not vaccinated have been working throughout this, doing what is needed to keep things running and at least a little bit of an economy. So are the masses thankful, No. Quite the opposite, people who have been overcome with fear are now ready to demonize unvaccinated members of our society that are often the ones who have been keeping it going.

If we really believe this is about saving peoples lives then why are they not locking down these people, and getting them off the drugs instead of putting all their effort in getting me to take drugs? Makes no sense.
The Liberal way. Pander to the takers and take from the givers.

That’s a lot of people for our small population.
Has it been considered if these people used the Fentanyl to commit suicide? Or was it by accident they over dosed?
None of my friends or people around me do drugs. So I really don’t have a clue.
It’s pretty common knowledge this stuff kills.
Just wondering.

They get no hand outs from me. You poison your body it's on you. Play stupid games and win stupid prizes. Liberals would rather give people like these free hand outs and tax the hard working Canadians than help out your everyday working man. Shameful.

Oh snap! Isn't that almost 2x more than covid deaths!? Yet here we are creating a divided society amongst the vaccinated and non vaccinated... Can't we just segregate the drug users? LOL

...and you want us to do what? Throw out a life vest to a sinking ship? When you play with fire - be expected to get burned. Take drugs you are asking for problems. Be accountable for your own actions and please stop holding society for your own stupidity...
