TEMPORARY GUESTS – The Whitehorse Correctional Centre (above) is housing inmates from the Baffin Correctional Centre after a fire damaged that facility.

Nunavut inmates transferred to Whitehorse

The Yukon government has an agreement in place with the Nunavut government to transfer up to 20 people who are on remand or serving a territorial sentence at the Baffin Correctional Centre to the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

The Yukon government has an agreement in place with the Nunavut government to transfer up to 20 people who are on remand or serving a territorial sentence at the Baffin Correctional Centre to the Whitehorse Correctional Centre.

The arrival of the inmates from Nunavut occurred last Saturday, on a private chartered flight, the Yukon government announced Monday. Fire has damaged the Baffin facility.

Six staff members from the Nunavut government – one supervisor, four correctional officers and one registered nurse – have joined the team at Yukon Corrections.

All inmates from Nunavut are being housed in one unit to limit contact with Yukon inmates.

“Following review by the chief medical officer of health, an alternative self-isolation plan for this emergency transfer was approved by the deputy minister of Community Services,” the government said.

“The transfers are being facilitated by the Department of Justice.

“The Government of Yukon welcomes this opportunity to be able to offer assistance to the Government of Nunavut during this challenging time and until repairs can be made to the Baffin Correctional Centre.”

Hi there "eyeroll", is that your real name? Why would I be at a dinner table with strangers? That's awfully presumptuous of you.

"They likely have an SOA with Nolinor for regular prisoner transport.
Stop trying to see things where they don't exist." So, they LIKELY have.. you don't know that, just guessing. And based on your guess, you get a little pushy as well.. Stop trying to see things where they don't exist. Another guess. But, sounding a tad.. um.. bossy.
CovidBC, and DA: you go ahead and say whatever you want to say. But, nice if everyone could stay on topic. Me too. But sometimes, i feel compelled to reply to personal attacks. It's so useless trying to prevent people from having an opinion that differs from yours.

Uncivil: Thanks for the input. I did not know that. I think I thought pushers, thieves, violent people, were walking the streets because there wasn't room in the jail. So it all goes back to the courts?

WCC could house all inmates from all three territories cause leftist judges here don’t put anybody in jail. Lots of high risk people that will re offend walking the streets...it’s shameful.

@covidbc
It's not about decency, it's about security and reaction time. They likely have an SOA with Nolinor for regular prisoner transport.
Stop trying to see things where they don't exist.

@DA
All June does is complain. Be glad you aren't trapped with her at the dinner table this weekend.

Hello JJ - There would be a ton of room in the new Jail. It has been operating at 1/4-1/2 capacity for a long time in the era of people who commit crimes because: racism, mental health, neurocognitive disorders, and the social inequality imposed by the virtues of white supremacy such as accountability, responsibility, and consequences for ones criminal behaviours.

If we returned to such lofty ideals as accountability, responsibility, and consequences for criminal behaviours then we would have concerns but until then the facility will remain way under utilized.

I do not understand the ludicrous, absolutely dumb comments of some here. OF COURSE NUNAVUT WILL PAY THEIR WAY AND SOME OF THE SUPPORT STAFF WILL ASSIST OUR HOTELS!! These prisoners will be escorted back home before being released. I assume all non threatening prisoners will already have been released In Nunavut.
This will not be a short time, given the difficulty to get repair materials to Nunavut.
Their financial support will reduce Yukon costs to run the facility.

Juniper, let's be real. The inmates who moved into WCC do not negatively affect your life in any way. Yes, we have room. Yes, it is temporary. No, you do not need compensation. No, you are not a victim here. Quit whining.

Not even the decency to use a northern airline.
Nolinor is Quebec based.

Why is this even a story? So 20 inmates were transferred from Baffin Island. Who cares or is this to justify the biggest waste of money ever. This new fancy jail staffed and filled by outsiders. Now I see why we needed a jail to house so many inmates because we foresaw the future. Guaranteed none of them are drug dealers and they get the revolving door treatment.

ConAir II - Starring RoseAnne Bar as Tracey McPhee; John Cusack as John Phelps; Colm Meaney as the Superintendent of WCC; and Rachel Ticotin as the “jail guard”.

Con Air II - Escape from Accountability... A tour de force of high stakes emotionalism and the politics of identity... An eye-opener in the dumbing down of the Correctional System...

Critically acclaimed, rave reviews - I knew things were bad with the Yukon Correctional system but to see just how stupid... It’s an eye-opener for sure and every Yukoner should be afraid - It gives new meaning to, Justice Denied!

Just what we need in our beautiful land, some more good for nothing criminals. Tired of all the Lieberal handouts when we do not even look after our own. Sickening.

And? Is there any compensation for us? Hotels, transportation and meals for escorts? Surely there are some costs involved? I'm sure that most of Whitehorse will be delighted to have extra criminals to house, feed, provide medical for. Any guestimate on the length of time we will have them here for? Did we turn some of our own miscreants loose to make room for them? We really had a spare wing at the jail for them?
