No apology heard from couple
The British Columbia couple who fraudulently obtained doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in Beaver Creek on Jan. 21 have allegedly tested negative for the virus.
The British Columbia couple who fraudulently obtained doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in Beaver Creek on Jan. 21 have allegedly tested negative for the virus.
That’s the word from the White River First Nation (WRFN).
Janet Vander Meer, the WRFN’s COVID-19 Inter-Agency Team Volunteer Lead, said she spoke with a lawyer representing Rodney and Ekaterina Baker over the weekend.
Vander Meer said she received a call from Whitehorse lawyer Jennie Cunningham, who said she is representing the couple.
The lawyer did not respond to the Star’s requests for comment this morning.
“It was a very brief conversation,” Vander Meer said. “She told me the Bakers had both been tested on Jan. 29, with the results being obtained on Jan. 30.
“It was a relief to hear the results,” she said – while noting the tests were carried out a week after the couple visited the tiny community.
“It’s like the community was holding its breath waiting for them.”
Vander Meer said she was somewhat skeptical about the worth of the tests coming a week later.
She speculated the Bakers are starting to sketch out a defence for their alleged actions, and are trying to ameliorate the astonishingly bad press they’re been subject to.
During that brief conversation, Vander Meer said there was no hint of an apology for the couple’s behaviour.
Since the incident, the story has gone world-wide and the WRFN has been besieged by media from all over the globe.
“I even had a call from Russia,” she said in disbelief. “I guess she’s a Russian actress or something; I don’t know. I don’t have time to go reading up on them.”
(Last week, complete with a graphic, CNN erroneously reported the Bakers’ trip had been to the territory of Yukon in Ukraine.)
Vander Meer said bluntly she’s getting tired of dealing with the incident, as the WRFN struggles to handle the pandemic.
She said she’s more than familiar with the question of border jumping, since many of the local residents in the Beaver Creek area are still crossing into Alaska and returning, and vice-versa.
The bonds of family and community between the region are stronger than an arbitrary political border, and the situation takes a lot of time to address, Vander Meer said.
She did say, though, that she was personally offended by the Bakers.
Vander Meer said her mother, who is battling cancer, was at the vaccination clinic at the same time as the Bakers.
“She’s been out of her home maybe two or three times in 10 months only for this to happen,” she said, her voice trailing off.
“How the Bakers could have looked at someone like that, perhaps the most vulnerable population in the community, and not said, ‘we’re leaving, we can’t do this,’ I don’t understand.
“That’s disgusting to me... and a very personal moment.”
Vander Meer said she’s busy preparing now for the second clinic, keeping what the Bakers did in mind as she does so.
“That’s what’s keeping my attention right now.”

Even if the couple did apologize, would the Yukon be gracious and accept that apology? I would hope so, and yet I wouldn't put my money on it.

@ My opinion. I agree with your comment. I love the irony about the sign last summer telling people to stay out of Atlin, then I see every Atlin resident in Whitehorse all the time. Goofy.

Groucho - Agreed! Apologizing admits guilt. It won't work to their advantage in court. It's all just strategic moves.

Look up this article by Trial Site News entitled:
"In Far-Flung Places, COVID-19 Is Being Treated Early And Well. Here’s Why Americans Don’t Know This."
Excerpt:
"It has occurred to us all. Somewhere in this plague-ridden world is a way to manage COVID-19 that works. Somebody must be getting this right.
Indeed, at isolated hospitals and nursing homes, in parts of India and Africa, in countries like Bangladesh and Egypt, and even in a few American doctors’ offices, COVID-19 is quietly and effectively being managed. Fewer patients in those places go to hospitals. Those admitted don’t stay as long. Fewer die, according to preliminary but impressive studies.
The typical American, however, has heard none of this — not heard that COVID can be prevented, not that it can be treated early, not that we can relieve the suffering and, potentially, the long-term damage. They have not heard that there is a drug called ivermectin.
Here’s why they don’t know.
— Politics in the United States has distorted and undermined the treatment debate here and worldwide. " ...

Please get real, this story is a storm in a teacup. The real issue is that our politicians imposed harmful covid restrictions on us in a dictatorial manner, they follow the WHO’s dictates that we never voted for, while the WHO is obviously engaged in conflicts of interest with big pharma funders who profit enormously from vaccine sales.
And these politicians claim these covid restrictions will only be lifted when we all take this experimental vaccine, which has a record of adverse effects for many, plus other potential long-term effects that might only show up months later, we don’t know because they skipped the animal testing. No matter, as long as big pharma rakes in several more billions $$$...
Government controlled mainstream media is censoring dissenting health professionals who try to warn us against the harms caused by lockdowns. MSM is also completely silent on inexpensive anti-viral treatments that have proved very effective (e.g. Ivermectin) for covid, apparently because there’s no profit in it for big pharma. MSM has also been used to terrorize the population with out-of-context stories of ‘increasing covid cases’, while ignoring the fact that the PCR tests are incorrectly used for covid mass testing because they result in false positives.
All this for a covid virus with which most infected people only have mild or no symptoms. Meanwhile shuttered businesses have gone bankrupt, rates of depression, suicides and overdoses are way up. Canada has amassed an enormous debt that will be burdening tax payers for decades to come, and the 1% billionaires have gotten wealthier.
People, wake up.

I think it is a little rich that all the small communities in the Yukon are so concerned about anyone going to them when they themselves are in Whitehorse continually.
Big fuss about the danger of these guys flying to Whitehorse yet many people fly here every day. From all over Canada, it isn't illegal. Where these guys broke the rules was skipping the self isolation. Nothing else the way I see it.
People have to CHILL a bit.

Hey didn’t Sandy Silver fly or drive to Dawson to get his shot? After all he now lives in Whitehorse does he not? Sorta like Pauline Frost flying to Old Crow for hers then spouts off about climate change! Am I the only one that sees the hypocrisy?

It's hard to believe Covid hasn't already made the rounds through the community months ago and still circulating amongst a population that has built up some immunity.
Point being people shouldn't worry so much about these two outsiders putting Yukoners "at risk". What they did was dumb and contemptible but certainly not worthy of vigilante justice by Yukoners.

Some would interpret an apology as an admission of guilt. I suspect lawyers would advise against this prior to going to court.

Maybe they feel the blood they left on the floor in this barroom brawl is apology enough.
The "government" is paying for all our tests and vaccines. What makes us so special that some feel entitled, MLAs included, to gather round and pitch rocks, I really don't know.
And by the way, if distancing and masking still makes us so vulnerable that the few minutes these two crossed any of our paths represent this huge threat, why are we doing it?

I think the federal and territorial governments should apologize for the preferential treatment Yukoners have for getting the covid vaccine.
We are so lucky and special for some inexplicable reason then people want to hang someone who takes advantage of our privilege.

Politicization of the justice system is an enormously bad idea. The WRFN have been actively pressuring government to jail these folks, and the pitch-fork mob is out in full force. The media is definitely not helping the situation.
As Hanley himself pointed out, there was minimal risk to the community.
These two accounted for a grand total of 2 shots. That's right, folks. TWO shots. I bet that the "vacc team" left the community with a considerable number of unused doses.
And now there is evidence that they tested negative for the "covid".
Jail time simply is not warranted and the government will spend a lot of time and money to prosecute these folks for a relatively minor administrative offence.
Time for the media to put the brakes on the hysteria.

So, we have people zipping in and out of all our communities, and across provincial-territorial borders, national borders, with many individuals crossing borders themselves as indicated in the article. ALL - Putting others at risk. We have politicians travelling everywhere for this that and the other thing and even for photo ops. Unfeckingbelievable the amount of hypocrisy that can be leveraged for some faux outrage.
Furthermore, you, we, me are all complicit in the this campaign of global terror that has seen many people doing things similarly around the globe. The most likely explanation is that they are scared too. Thank goodness you all have settled down on the toilet paper.
We have become an emotionally dysregulated society and this is a very bad place to be in. You want to know what a trait of narcissistic psychopathology is - Judgment of others, especially when there are very little facts on the table.

Well..at least they were honest about this. I also don't make false apologies. Why would they be sorry? They spent a lot of time, AND a lot of money on this plan. If they weren't so arrogant they likely wouldn't even have gotten caught.
I can't even imagine the hoopla had either one of them tested positive for Covid.
