A new Youth Mental Wellness Grant is now available for youth-serving organizations in the territory through the Youth Directorate and Aboriginal Relations.

The amount of $300,000 will be provided to four local youth organizations.

They are the Boys & Girls Club of Yukon, BYTE – Empowering Youth Society, the Heart of Riverdale Community Centre and the Youth of Today Society.

In addition, $100,000 is available for other local youth-serving organizations across the Yukon for smaller projects valued between $10,000 and $20,000.

The grant will help cover eligible programing expenses for initiatives that address mental wellness issues for youth that are not already funded through other sources.

The Youth Mental Wellness Grant will help fund projects that are rooted in the 40 Developmental Assets Model, which have been adapted for the Yukon by incorporating the wisdom of elders and rural Yukon First Nation communities to reflect how each asset is defined within those cultural contexts.

The deadline to apply for the grant is Sept. 15.

Applications should be submitted to the Youth Directorate by emailing gord.kurzynski@yukon.ca and chris.nash@yukon.ca

“We are continuing to support local youth organizations that provide valuable programs and services to young Yukoners,” Premier Sandy Silver said today.

“The 40 Developmental Assets Model addresses substance use and other mental health and wellness components while giving youth new avenues to develop healthy relationships and build valuable skills.

“I encourage local organizations to apply for the new Youth Mental Wellness Grant, and I look forward to seeing how these projects will create a positive impact in our community.”

Having never heard of the 40, I read the entire thing tonight. It's a tall order.

Just who is the targeted audience for this program? The following is just a small quote of part of the 40. The one that is going to be the hardest to implement. If some parents did not care where their kid was at 3 a.m., why would they care now? Some parents know their kids have a cd player, or a bike, or bring home a KitchenAide for their Mom, and they say.. thank you! Not, those things are $450. where did you get the money? The 40 seems to be targeted at- "at risk" kids for criminality, rather than at risk kids for suicide, drug use, "eligible programing expenses for initiatives that address mental wellness issues for youth that are not already funded through other sources." It also appears to be FN program, directed; " adapted for the Yukon by incorporating the wisdom of elders and rural Yukon First Nation communities to reflect how each asset is defined within those cultural contexts." (What does that even mean?)

Family support—Family life provides high levels of love and support.
Positive family communication—Young person and their parent(s) communicate positively, and young person is willing to seek parent(s) advice and counsel.
Other adult relationships—Young person receives support from three or more nonparent adults.
Caring neighborhood—Young person experiences caring neighbors.
Caring school climate—School provides a caring, encouraging environment.
Parent involvement in schooling—Parent(s) are actively involved in helping young person succeed in school.

Whether programs are looking at criminal intervention, or mental health, we, as parents, or we as people who have a vested interest in the health and welfare of our community, and our children, obviously need to do something to help families survive 'modern' progress intact.

Meanwhile, I am paying for that in taxes, having fought for over a decade to access anyone or any mental health resource. Matter of fact, I could have used that money when I was being thrown down the stairs as a child. But perhaps I am too whatever you think I am to warrant the help I sought. Best of luck kids, news reported this week that antidepressants are just placebos based on studies from the 60s that were never conclusive and psychology never includes circumstance into one's wellbeing, so take the grants, you will be paying obscenely for the rest of your life to feel nothing...

Like I do.
