Just a little more than four years after the Edgewater Hotel was sold, it will change hands once again.

Northern Vision Development (NVD) is set to take over the Main Street hotel on June 1 after entering a purchase and sale agreement with the current owners.

"We have always had an eye on the Edgewater,” NVD CEO Rich Thompson said in a statement today announcing the ownership change.

The current owners approached NVD earlier this year to see if the company – which already owns the Best Western Gold Rush Inn and the Coast High Country (previously the High Country Inn) – was interested in buying.

Thompson said the 32-room hotel offers a similar standard to the company's other hotel interests in the city in its beds, linens, TVs and other features.

NVD officials are hoping to retain ”many” of the 24 full- and part-time employees working there now.

Thompson said they will be interviewing staff over the next week or so to find out who is interested in continuing to work there under the new management.

As he pointed out, there's often a period of uncertainty when new owners take over, and some staff may seek other opportunities.

He said wages will be in line with NVD's payscale, adding no one would see a reduction in their pay.

Taking over the operation of a hotel during the busy summer season, Thompson said NVD will focus primarily on making sure the Edgewater guests enjoy their stay in the early days of its ownership as it assesses the operations there.

He did note the company is looking at reinvigorating the food and beverage services offered at the hotel's lounge and the Cellar Room restaurant.

The acquisition brings the total number of hotel rooms offered by NVD in Whitehorse to more than 200.

Along with its hotel operations, NVD is also a well-known commercial and residential developer. It recently completed the River's Reach condominiums and the Waterfront Station commercial complex.

They are also renovating the former Canadian Tire building on Fourth Avenue to be used as a retail and office mall.

The tender for that renovation project was released recently and will be awarded in the next month. It's anticipated that project will be completed next year.

As NVD gets set to take over the Edgewater, current co-owner Wendy Taylor is reflecting on what's been accomplished at the hotel over the last four years.

When the ownership group purchased the hotel from the Stokes family, who had owned the hotel for 44 years, there was a vision for the business to become a quality boutique hotel, recognizing the hotel's history and Main Street location.

"We got involved with the Edgewater because of our view that it is an important Yukon asset with a great location,” Taylor said in the statement.

Over the last four years, the owners have moved towards that by upgrading the rooms, adding a patio on the deck and other initiatives.

Taylor is also the president of Alkan Air while the other major co-owner, Tina Woodland, operates the local Ford dealership.

Since those other business commitments make it difficult to fully focus on the hotel, the owners approached NVD about selling.

Taylor noted NVD has a proven track record in the city and has shown a strong commitment to the territory.

"We are pleased that during our ownership tenure, we were able to improve the overall quality of the rooms offered, and we are equally pleased to be turning it over to NVD, given their track record of continuous product improvement with the two properties they already operate in this market,” she said.

Bob Graham: That is in fact the hotel across the street from the train station and docks (which we are now rebuilding) The guy you mention digging the hole is Harry "Wig-Wam” Fieck.

Local artist and historian Jim Robb knew him and he and his houses were depicted in many of Robb's stories and paintings. Fieck died back in '77.

More info on Fieck here:

Good one, Arn. I was thinking "shades of White Pass" myself.

Is this the Hotel across from the Yukon River where paddle Boats were dry docked? I lived in Whitehorse in late 50's as my father was a soldier in Army Camp on the mountain! Way back then, the Hotel owner wanted an extension at the back and a great old native said he could dig out the hole for the foundation in 10 days by hand shovel! The owner bet him I think $10,000 that he couldn't do it in 10 days by shovel. My parents would go to Hotel for a few beers & watch the progress.

Darn, if he didn't do it in 10 days & owner would not pay up on the bet!

The native spent the next few days filling the hole back in! What a hoot! Does anyone remember this?

Nice to see two women owning and operating the Edgewater, Alkan Air, and the Ford dealership between them. It took me by surprise a bit, and then I thought, why should that be a surprise? May the trend continue with more ventures!
