The Yukon NDP has unveiled Annie Blake as the party’s candidate in Vuntut Gwitchin for the upcoming territorial election.

Blake is the director of health and social programs for the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation government.

She oversees the delivery of a variety of social services to citizens, the party said.

An important focus of her work has been supporting children and families as well as ensuring consistent access to mental health services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I always strive to improve systems and supports that have a direct impact on the lives of citizens in my home community,” said Blake.

“I’ve worked on the front line for a number of years, which enhanced my ability to understand the challenges people face in their daily lives.

“I want to use my voice to empower those who don’t feel like the system is working for them and bring people’s voices to the forefront.”

The riding is represented by Liberal cabinet minister Pauline Frost.

“Running in this election is an opportunity for me to advocate for the needs of our community,” Blake said.

“As a young child, our elders taught me to listen and treat everyone with respect.

“No matter the struggles someone might face, we are all human and we all deserve dignity. As an MLA, I will continue to meet people where they are at and always listen to their perspective.

“I want to be able to contribute to enhancing the well-being of my home community for all citizens who call Old Crow home.”

NDP Leader Kate White was in Old Crow for community visits last week. She said citizens are excited to have Blake as their candidate.

“Everyone I’ve met has a story about a time when Annie has supported them,” said White.

“She’s exactly who you want fighting for you in government. Annie gets things done for people.”

Blake is a descendant of the Dagoo people and a Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation citizen.

She is a social worker, with a decade of experience helping people of all ages.

She has previously worked for the Council of Yukon First Nations, the First Nations Health Programs of the Yukon Hospital Corp., Kaushee’s Place and the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate office.

The mother of three teenagers, she said she is passionate about helping youth in her community.

Today’s announcement comes a week after the NDP announced the candidacies of three other Indigenous women who are seeking nominations with the party.

Wholeheartedly agree with EJ. Add to that the carbon foot print of flying to Old Crow for a non-essential trip during a pandemic...…
Not that I would usually see a problem with that, just pointing out the hypocrisy. Rules for you but not for me.

So did anyone else see the video of Kate and her in Old Crow? Kate White was about 2 feet from her without a mask on and I'm pretty sure Annie Blake isn't a part of Kate's bubble! Normally I wouldn't have a problem but it's just the hypocrisy of it. She is a politician telling people to follow Covid protocols but somehow she herself is above such things.

In the NDP's view, everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others.

Any viable option to Frost is a good one. Hopefully, the electorate in this riding is hungry for a change of attitude in government. Arrogance, corruption and no democratic accountability begin at the top. A change of leadership is long overdue.

What, was long time VGFN citizen Skeeter Wright not available to the NDP this time?

Happy to see more FN representation in the government runnings. Even if they are backing the socialist NDP.
