More prescribed fire work planned for Mary Lake

Yukon Wildland Fire Management staff were set to conduct another prescribed fire operation in the Mary Lake this week.

Yukon Wildland Fire Management staff were set to conduct another prescribed fire operation in the Mary Lake this week.

Today, a test burn was set to confirm whether conditions will allow for the operation on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Like all prescribed fire, this work takes place under strict weather and safety conditions to minimize risk to the public,” Wildland Fire Management said Monday afternoon.

“Crews will use prescribed fire to remove slash left over from last year’s fuel reduction work to make the Mary Lake Shaded Fuel Break more effective and create good growing conditions for the aspen trees that will be planted in the area next year.”

The Mary Lake Shaded Fuel Break is part of the Whitehorse South Fuel Break. This is a strategic fire guard that reduces the risk of catastrophic wildfire to the city and its surrounding subdivisions.

Last week’s burning operations prompted worried residents to call the Whitehorse Fire Department and media outlets to ask why the city was blanketed with smoke.

“While burning takes place, smoke will be visible from the work site,” Wildland Fire Management said.

“Public access will be limited to the area while Wildland Fire Management vehicles and staff are at work.”

This is former Mayor McCheese. I am announcing my intention to run for Mayor in the next city election. I promise to put meat on the table and to not bun-off my responsibilities on the people.

If you are tired of the, I can’t believe it’s not meat politicos then, then vote for me! Lettuce begin a new. Let’s take back our power so the public body can be renewed from our heads to-ma-toes!

Hey make sure the wind is opposite to where our village of idiots sits.
Word on the street is our junkies, outdoor fornicators, public town defecators, and the many other hundreds of lay a-bouts...
Do not enjoy performing their crafts in such a Smokey environment.

...certain our liberal mayor cares more about that the rest of the rubes that contribute to her six figures.

"strategic fire guard"

Hahahaha! Good luck with stopping anything other than a creeping ground fire.
What is the real purpose of this so-called "fire break"? Who really stands to benefit from this work?

If only there was a time of year for this burning to be done when everything was covered with snow and there was already a haze of wood smoke in the air.

If we get as much smoke as last time, I will not rest until your outfit is charged with pollution.
