A woman suffered minor injuries Saturday afternoon after the Dodge Caravan she was driving struck a cow moose on the Alaska Highway just north of Crestview.
Platoon chief Don McKnight of the Whitehorse Fire Department said this morning the driver, whose name wasn’t released, was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital by ambulance to be checked over.
The woman was the lone occupant of the van, and the moose struck the passenger side of the southbound vehicle, he told the Star.
McKnight said a man at the scene was able to obtain permission from Environment Yukon to salvage the meat.
Traffic control was implemented to keep one lane open and traffic moving, he said.
There was substantial damage to the white van.
Communication officer Sophie Best of Environment Yukon said this morning the man who received permission to salvage the meat was at their offices this morning to get the required permit.
He did witness the collision and provided aid the driver, she said.
Best said he has shared the meat with friends and the community.
The cow killed in the collision was lactating, Best said.
Staff have looked over the area for the calf, she added, but have not found it yet.
There was a cow hit in the same area about a year ago, Best said.

Two cows and two calves have been hit in this same spot in less than 1.5 years. Maybe it should have moose crossing signs put up. I believe the cows were hit at night not during the day.
