I met Kevin in Vancouver, we immediately liked each other and shared many beliefs. We spent the night in Whitehorse, had dinner and a very good conversation about everything including our passion for food. It had been many years since I felt comfortable with someone so fast, it felt awesome. When we started working at the Drunken Goat restaurant in Dawson City together it was like magic, we fit so well together, no envy, no jealousy, just good old working together as a team. That night Kevin and I had dinner together and I became tired so I went back to the restaurant and to sleep. At two o'clock in the morning I woke knowing something was wrong and after I checked Kevin's room and he wasn't there. Again this feeling, so I dressed and walked about town. I was about to check the street where he was when I left him, but I remembered our talk about how he was a grown man and how he told me not worry so much and I should get some sleep. Now I wish I hadn't had that conversation with Kevin and I really wish I had gone one more block to where they found him. I'm so sorry Kevin , so sorry I couldn't help or save you brother, please forgive me, your friend for a little over 15 days, your brother forever, Kevin Holden

The accused murderer is not Indigenous. He is the boy of a well known miner and grew up a little wild. He now is in a world of hurt and the other guy is dead. Terrible situation.

one life ended on May 21, 2021 at 10:56 pm

I just read my post 'one life ended' and it doesn't read how I meant it. Too many people are murdered up here and the killer does not face serious consequences. The Gladue considerations should not apply to killing people and other serious violent crimes. The victims who are most often affected in terms of not seeing justice against violent criminals, are Native people themselves. So I was not meaning this as a slur against Native people at all. Just stating that far too often in the Yukon, people are killed and the murderer gets off with a couple of years in prison due to Gladue excuses. Meanwhile 99% of the people with the same excuses do not go around violently assaulting people. I am not native but if I were I'd have a problem with the Gladue thing for several reasons.

Anyway, I didn't like the way my post read and thought I would explain.

About bloody time. Everyone knew who it was the day of, what is going on with the justice system here? 3 years later? Come on people.

Two lives destroyed? One young man embarking on his career as a chef was murdered. The other? He's still alive, and if he gives a good sob story and says he was really, really drunk, and grandpa went to residential school, he could be out in a couple of years.

Sadly I have very little confidence in our courts to mete out the appropriate justice. Yet another weak sentence we can look forward to seeing.

Two lives destroyed. Not to mention, the lives, changed forever, of the people that loved them. Such a tragedy.

What a senseless tragedy!
