A Whitehorse man died in a fire last Sunday, the Yukon Coroner’s Service confirmed Wednesday.

He was identified as Jacques Joseph Allen, a 74-year-old long-time Yukoner.

“On Jan. 28, just before midnight, the Whitehorse Fire Department and 911 services were notified of smoke alarms ringing in one of the apartments located at 1190 Front Street, a building owned by Yukon Housing Corporation,” chief coroner Heather Jones said in a statement.

“The alarm was coming from the second floor, and by the time the fire department arrived, the hallway was filled with smoke.

“The fire was sourced to one apartment, where fire-suppression devices were successful in limiting the damage to a small part of the living area.”

Allen, the lone occupant of the apartment, was found to have suffered “significant injuries” due to the fire, the coroner’s office said.

He was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy will be conducted in Abbotsford, B.C., next Tuesday.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Yukon Coroner’s Service continues to investigate along with the Whitehorse Fire Department.

“No further details will be released at this time,” the coroner’s office said.

Condolences to Mr. Allen's friends and family. With the hallways full of smoke as reported, were any other residents impacted by this fire? If so what is their current status?
