The Yukon Liberal party has named a new nominee for the Kluane Riding.

Luke Campbell was introduced by the party during a Zoom call at lunchtime today.

A backgrounder from the party stated he is a “Champagne and Aishihik citizen who grew up in Shadhäla (Champagne). After going to school in Whitehorse, Campbell moved back to Shadhäla, his hometown, three years ago to reconnect to where he is from.

“I come from a long line of leaders,” Campbell said. “My family are leaders in the bush and leaders in the boardroom. I want to be genuine and speak the truth.

“I have never forgotten where I come from and how I always should reflect on the past to make the future better.”

As an elementary school support worker with the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN), Campbell has connected with many youth in a number of schools.

He is currently the language co-ordinator for CAFN, where he works to revive and enhance the Southern Tutchone language.

Campbell stated he believes his connections to so many of people in the Kluane riding, from youth to elders, will help bring more of their voice to government policies and decisions.

“Luke Campbell will be an excellent representative for the people of Kluane. He has a strong sense of community, compassion and empathy,” said Liberal Leader and Premier Sandy Silver.

“This young man is already a leader, and it would be an honour to welcome him to the Yukon Liberal Party. I know he will be a strong voice for everyone who lives in his riding.”

Party officials said there is a second nominee in the offing – but wouldn’t offer more on Campbell’s prospective challenger.

The Yukon Party’s Wade Istchenko holds the seat.

Guess what arrived on my door step yesterday..and everyone else's in Whistlebend??? Greeting cards with children's artwork from Liberal MLA Paolo Gallina...not sure anyone followed the coloring contest he initiated...but now he is using the children's artwork for his re-election campaign. Way to go Liberals! Vote them out!

@shari maybe you can tell everyone else in Yukon what to do with their lives too? Maybe you can tell my kids what’s best for them?

Congratulations to Luke for stepping up. More brave young Yukoners are needed in government. Some comments here are appalling. It takes lot of courage to step up, no matter what party one person is from. Most of the people who make bad comments do not even have the courage to put their real name.

@Eric , he won't have to work, he will be able to sit back and sponge off the taxpayer for the rest of his life. Every month he will enjoy his pension that all the elected washouts get courtesy of us.

Maybe we should just reelect him until the end of his days? At least we would get something from our taxes.

A rising star in his community. Liberals are lucky he is choosing to move into the political arena with them. Would love to see some fresh energy from Kluane.

The Liberal party member from Kluane? Does this mean that all this time the Liberals had no Klu?

But seriously now... This whole idea about youthful activists in politics is a literal
no-brainer and will absolutely leave the leadership of our Territory without any real clue.

What’s the hurry Currie? We all know that Luke was too young when he went after Darth Vader and he lost his hand as a result... Ahhh,,, The hubris of youth!

Maybe next election cycle we try a couple actual monkeys and Ouija Board.

@Shari on: In case you don't know (which I doubt it), only 6 years in the house and you'll get pension for life, plus dental, etc, etc all thanks to our taxation dollars. I hope I got your blood boiling.

Good for Luke! We need more young Yukoners with fresh ideas in government, regardless of the party they run for. His parents must be proud of him.
And Shari, you're wrong, we do need more do-gooders.

A great way to add to the failure that is the liberals.

@ Eric
He can come and help me cut wood. I got a couple of great lots in Haines junction and a bonus he will be close to home.
Just offering, however he would have to work harder then most people are willing too.

Just curious. As an elementary school support worker, why would this young person with an entire career in front of them think it would be a good idea to leave a position that Yukon needs, our kids need, to run for politics? Thinking they can "change the world" in some way as a Liberal MLA. Advice - let the kid continue to work with our kids. We need him more there than another Liberal do-gooder.
