City councillor Ted Laking is once again raising concerns about financial pressures on taxpayers – as budget variance reports indicated that costs have gone overbudget on several projects.
At the Jan. 10 Standing Committee on Corporate Services, Laking first raised concerns about the amount budgeted for fuel and propane and whether it was enough.
At the time, he recalled today, indications were that the budget was adequate, as it accounted for potential price fluctuations.
However, the second quarter variance reports indicate the city is now expected to go $301,494 over the original budget.
This is in addition to the additional $459,264 spent on snow removal than was originally planned.
“It’s important to reiterate that when it comes to a number of projects that we are seeing forces outside of the control of the city resulting in our expenditures increase,” he told Monday’s council meeting.
“I think about the almost $301,000 that we are expecting to spend more on propane and heating fuel.
“We have almost $460,000 that was unanticipated for snow removal, and I do not think these increased costs are stopping anytime soon,” Laking said.
“These costs are not discretionary; these are essential items, but this is only the second quarter variance report and we still have some major capital items to come with respect to the escarpment and Marwell lift station.
“So it is important to consider these increased costs because we are going through our budgeting process soon.”
It will be important, Laking told his colleagues, “to temper expectations what will be possible in the budget because our funds are getting tighter and the costs and unexpected costs continue to go through the roof.
“So we need to keep in mind what is essential and non-essential when it comes to spending.”

Ted the populist.
It’s beyond hilarious that this guy criticizes the government that he is elected to.
Ted. Stop regurgitating things you heard at the coffee shop and come up with actual solutions. That’s what we pay you for.
We know what the problems are it’s your job to fix them!

Just throwing this out there...
If council and mayor are representing private companies and consultant firms over their constituents, vote them out. Full stop.

Acta non verba....Actions not words.
All you government officials are full of words and no actions. Pointing fingers all day, just do something already and stop reporting it like you deserve a cookie. You steal enough from the public. I do not care what the topic issue is, just literally do something about it, finish it and shut up about it. All to much to ask from my over priced government.

Finally, finally...it ever so slowly begins to dawn on the vax-addled herd, like a slowly creeping fungus, a certain dim awareness that our money is losing it's credibility and therefore it's ability to call forth a never-ending stream of desperately needed resources.

Good for Ted in continuing to put out press releases on his own. The other Councilors and Mayor would be wise to follow suit if they want to get their names out there for future political runs at other levels of government.
He should however be thinking of solutions and not just pointing out problems. Perhaps the City needs to do less snow clearing in order to avoid debt? Or maybe raise taxes or fees? Or stop filling potholes and doing roadwork? Maybe fire a bunch of city workers?
Also it's a bit ironic that council is worried about increased heating costs after deciding not to build their new city hall admin building which would have been about 10 times more energy efficient and better insulated. Sure it saved a bunch of money upfront on capital, but now every year, the costs to run and heat that building are going to keep going up as it starts to fall apart. That was penny wise and pound foolish.

The new council is a disappointment for sure.
We need more Council oversight and direction of City staff who seem to underestimate the cost of doing business far too often.
We also need someone on Council to explain why some associations always get overly generous support from Council.

Ted, your the fiscal conservative. You're on the council, how do you suggest reining in the spending? Nowhere in the article did you make a suggestion. You just shook up the jar to get the cockroaches fighting. Hardly good leader ship!

There are necessities. Issues that I want my tax dollar spent on. Snow removal is one of them. Hand outs to privately owned businesses, like Mt. Sima, not so much. If people want to run a business, run it without my money. How much is the City spending on 'consultations'? Many, many of the City Hall employee's are from Ontario, used to huge spending budgets. These folks are the advisors to our council. They think nothing of a couple hundred thousand for art for the lobby. Or a million here and there for a couple of parking places.. Crap like that..piddling away our money left and right.
I know, everyone and the pony they rode in on, has asked, every council we've had, "Do you know what spending within our means is?"
The following link has since been removed. How on earth is the relatively small tax base in Whitehorse, going to pay out a debt of $15 million dollars.
CITY OF WHITEHORSE – STANDING COMMITTEES https://www.whitehorse.ca › home ›Jun 20, 2022 — ... Debt. (15,732,019). What is the interest on that? Its got to stop.
Except for Ted. This council is a huge disappointment to me. Especially, Cabot. They want 4 years? jesus, we should be able to kick them in 2 year.

Wow I have asked for variances reports but Mayor Curries would not permit them.
