BACK IN BUSINESS – After being vacant for the past three years, the local KFC outlet is set to tickle fast food fans' fancy this summer.
Kentucky Fried Chicken, the greasy cornerstone of the southern-style fast food market, will reopen its doors in Whitehorse this summer.
Kentucky Fried Chicken, the greasy cornerstone of the southern-style fast food market, will reopen its doors in Whitehorse this summer.
Local proprietors Peter and Joy Allen purchased the property on Second Avenue for just under $1 million.
The foreclosed property had been shuttered for three years, and the Allens plan to reopen as early as June.
"We looked at it and found that it was sorely missed in Whitehorse,” Peter Allen said in an interview today.
"The response has just been people going over the moon about it.”
The KFC chain is best known for its secret blend of 11 herbs and spices and for the iconic image of its late founder, Col. Harlan Sanders.
It's also the home of the Double Down.
The Double Down sandwich, a chicken, bacon and cheese sandwich, with pieces of fried chicken replacing the bun, was released last year to mixed reviews — some embracing the challenge to "take down the Double Down,” others horrified at the product's extreme salt and fat content, nearly a day's worth of sodium and about half a day's value of fat.
It remains one of the company's most popular items.
"Hopefully, we'll be bringing the Double Down to the North,” said Allen.
"But they only release it every so often, but maybe they will have it out by the summer or fall, and maybe we'll get permission to release it early.”
There is no word yet on whether the popular Toonie Tuesday will return.
Right now, renovating the building is the Allens' first priority.
"We've got some workers inside right now,” said Allen.
"They are going to completely renovate the interior of the building, get it up to the latest specs, just completely redesign it.”
A company based in Kelowna B.C. will be handling the renovations, but will be subcontracting some work to local contractors, said Allen.
Exterior renovations will be done at a later date, he said.
Service staff will be hired locally and through the territory's nominee program.

I've been here 19 yrs. and what I've craved the most is BBQ chicken. Like St-Hubert or Swiss Chalet.
KFC fried chicken says it all, "FRIED"

"Sadly missed"? Are you kidding me??? The last thing we need in this town is another greasy fast food joint! Have you heard about childhood obesity? It's on the rise in this country! Too bad Pita Pit or Booster Juice couldn't have moved in there. Coleslaw is not a salad people. Its covered in mayo. Eat your vegetables and not the Double Down!

You don't need a gaming centre/acrade up here to not be bored. Xbox/Playstation and computers are the reason for obesity in our youth. Kids need to be active and play outside. I'm 26 and things have changed so much in 10 years. My friends and I always found interesting things to do. Fishing, camping, tobogganing, snowboarding and things like that. Imagination is a casualty of gaming/tv world that kids now grow up in.
ps. I don't eat kfc but like everything there is nothing wrong with eating it once and awhile.

Wow, who cares? This town has enough fast food joints. What this town needs is a huge arcade/game center. Everyone complains about kids getting into trouble all the time right? Why? Because they are bored. Give them a real place to get off the streets. And I for one will not eat at KFC. A quick Google search will show you what kind of chickens you are eating. And a practice you openly support when you buy from them.

There's a lot of people that want cheap low-quality, chemical-laced 'food'.
KFC will do this profitably, and the ravens will love the tasty litter it provides.

Far out, I know tons of people wanting KFC back. People who don't like it don't have to eat it. Its not like people eat it everyday, jezzz, so many opinionated people pushing their values and diets on everyone else, just go live an institution will ya, there everything is bland and regimented to your delight. The rest of us will enjoy a bucket. Good luck to the new owners.

We love to try banning everything up here, when does a drive thru ban get proposed?
Maybe when CPAWS or YCS feels like it I suppose.
I never noticed KFC was closed for a couple years.
Guess that is why my arteries are clean and I can see my feet without a mirror.

Why couldn't they turn it into a Dairy Queen? I feel that the delicious ice cream was (and still is) missed far more than the fried chicken. The KFC building would have been a great location for a DQ. Right next to the riverfront and park. Especially on hot summer days with the Farmer's Market, business would have been booming.
I would take a Brownie Blizzard over the Double Down any day.

I hope they clean, not that I will be eating there. It's been sitting like that for years. Who knows what kind of bacteria is in there. Ew. Not to mention that the double down is just a heart attack waiting to happen. Ew again. Why not a different restaurant?
