A Yukon teacher has been honoured with an award from the Canadian Teacher’s Federation.
Pat Joe is a member of the Tagish Nation and the Dak’laweide Clan (Killer Whale and Wolf Crest), and is a citizen of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.
She recently received an award as an outstanding Indigenous educator from the federation, of which the Yukon Teachers Association is a member.
“She is a teacher, mother, grandmother and knowledge keeper,” a news release stated.
“She has been an outspoken advocate for her culture, history, beliefs, and values which she teaches through storytelling.
“Her distinguished achievements in leadership, education and public service have been widely recognized by her colleagues and students who are touched by her passion to deliver First Nation curriculum in all subject areas,” the statement added.
“She is very knowledgeable in the areas of First Nation traditional law, governance and social justice, which is evident in her work with all levels of government.”
She currently works at the Individual Learning Centre in Whitehorse
“To help bring the history and culture of Yukon First Nations to life, Pat has been instrumental in many projects, including “Our Home Magazine”, “From Trail to Tramway”, and “Canyon City”, which integrates the First Nation history, land, and first contact,” the statement said.
“These initiatives are just a few examples of her tireless dedication to deliver authentic First Nation traditional stories that continue to advance First Nation education in Yukon and throughout Canada.”
The release stated that as a former deputy chief and chief land claims and self-government negotiator, Joe “possesses many years of experience in the areas of politics and business.
“A survivor and third-generation student of residential schools, Pat diligently teaches about the legacy of residential schools and the impacts on First Nations.”

No matter what we do, we're not respected by society.

@ my opinion. Several Yukon First Nations have direct connections with the coastal Tlingits, including KDFN, TTC, CAFN and KFN. Of course, the Tlingit nations in the Yukon (i.e. TTC and C/TFN) have killer whale clans. I guess that I should not be surprised about the lack of cultural awareness of many people with respect to YFN culture. However, I am definitely not surprised about your weak [but snide] attempt at humour.

Congrats-- well deserved. As for those of you who diss her culture or 'why does it matter if she's FN?' Clearly you are not FN and don't understand the struggles with culture and acceptance, but you are all too happy to complain about FN whether they are getting an award or in the news for something negative. Grow up, live and let live, and celebrate accomplishments.

This day and age why are we still bringing up someone's race? They are a teacher. If I was Native this would make me mad. I believe this is an insult towards the Native community by constantly referring to as example: businesses' as "First Nation owned". To me it is implying that First Nations or colored people aren't good enough and it's an accomplishment when someone does something good. I'm tired of all this division in this country. We are all humans living the same life.

Great achievment! But why does it matter that she's first nation's!? Clear example of subliminal division.. when we need unity..
