Whitehorse bylaw officers are working to track down the owner or owners of five residential fuel tanks discovered in the McRae subdivision close to the Yukon River.
The bylaw department was informed last Friday about the fuel tanks left in the area.
They received a call from Environment Yukon officials who had received a report from someone who was in the area and came across them.
Senior bylaw officer Tom Wyers said Tuesday officers went to the area to take an initial look.
They determined that before the tanks could be properly disposed of, they would have to look at whether any of them had any oil or fuel remaining in them.
“We have to assess any leaking,” Wyers said, noting that an officer was set to be on the scene Tuesday to begin that work.
Once that’s done, any remaining oil would be drained and disposed of safely, with the oil tanks also disposed of according to regulations.
Wyers noted the city will also be looking at charges under the city’s waste management bylaw around illegal dumping.
In an email correspondence, Environment Yukon spokeswoman Roxanne Stasyszen said because the tanks are within municipal boundaries, they are under the jurisdiction of city bylaw officials and constitute an illegal dumping situation.
It won’t be known if there’s been any spill until after the tanks have been removed, Stasyszen noted.
At that point, there will be an assessment to look at possible contamination.

Yukon Housing is tendering contracts for replacing oil tanks all the time. Just ask them who has successfully bid lately.

Tipping fees? Give your head a shake.
For less than 50 bucks in absorbent towels, fees, and fuel, you can take an empty fuel tank UNCUT to Sally Salvage at the cutoff.
The current cost to replace a fuel tank is over 4k.
The only reason to do this is laziness and greed.
Tipping fees, pah! This isn't an oil change at home or a broken fridge type of disposal issue, it's people being unabashed s**ts.

A significant part of the problem is that according to the CoW Waste Management webpage, unless fuel tanks are purged and cut in half they are banned from the landfill. Nowhere do they define what constitutes 'purged'.
The CoW's waste disposal regulations are unrealistic, difficult to understand, and when combined with unclear or outrageous tipping fees, it's difficult for people to correctly dispose of waste. If it's not simple and easy to 'do the right thing' then people will find alternatives.
The incompetent Sustainability Department is directly responsible for all the problems involving waste disposal.

In the picture at the top of the story I can count seven tanks. Is this a file photo or a pic of the crime scene? It appears some fact checking may be in order.

A wee bit-O- clarity. This article says 5 tanks...more unsolved homicides than discarded tanks.
The state indoctrination site article cites nine tanks...quite a discrepancy...."if" SIS is close to accurate then might be a tie.
Hopefully my within terms points may get across edit free....I dunno?

Yeah that sucks about those oil tanks.
What sucks even more? Might be a tie between unsolved homicides and this number of tanks....in our wee sty.
But hey....there is always wishing...on a rainbow....we might get our priorities in order.
Willful ignorance (imo) contributed greatly to this trend of disposing of garbage and the epic levels of violence we now are conditioned to tolerate in our sty...formerly a beautiful wee wilderness town.

People talking about tipping fees being the culprit, what is the tipping fee for an oil tank?
This person is a complete jerk regardless. Now other people have to clean up after him. What a goof. Also, seven tanks? (I see 7) This was a contractor.

It will cost far more to clean up any mess, haul the tanks to the dump, and proceed with an investigation, than it would have cost to let them properly dispose of the tanks at the dump without outrageous punitive tipping fees. We can thank the myopic Sustainability Department for this.

Check the manufacturer stamps and see if you can find it on file with YTG or COW. Otherwise, you'll probably never find them.

Hey that's my fuel tank on Jun 7, 2017 at 8:46 pm
Arrrgh!
But the poor guy who replaced it is probably just trying to save the dumping fees so he can pay his mortgage in this ridiculous housing price city.....should check for a realtor in the tanks.

It is unfortunate but completely predictable when you penalize people or businesses for doing the right thing.
If you want to create a certain behaviour you do not make it punitive. Much like the return on bottles and cans did to educate and create a certain behaviour.
Now a return on everything is not possible, but how about if we want things to go to the dump we just do not penalize people for doing what we ask. Makes sense to me.

I guessing it's not one of the more reputable heating companies, but one of the less so. Any residents out there have a fuel oil tank replaced recently by a high speed type company?
