Hit-and-run incident claims a man’s life

The territory’s RCMP are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision late Friday night on the Alaska Highway near Watson Lake.

The territory’s RCMP are investigating a fatal hit-and-run collision late Friday night on the Alaska Highway near Watson Lake.

A 27-year-old man is dead. Police have not released his name.

No description of a suspect vehicle or vehicles has been released.

The fatality occurred approximately two kilometres west of the southeast Yukon town.

At 12:10 a.m. Saturday, a member of the public reported the incident to the police.

Watson Lake detachment and Emergency Medical Services personnel attended the scene.

The highway was closed for a period of time to continue the investigation. It was fully reopened on Saturday afternoon.

The investigation is being supported by the Yukon Coroner’s Office, the Town of Watson Lake and the Liard First Nation.

Investigators would like to speak to anyone who was travelling the highway between Watson Lake and Upper Liard between 10 p.m. Friday and 12:10 a.m. Saturday.

They’re also requesting anyone with dashboard video cameras travelling the highway between Whitehorse and Watson Lake, both west and eastbound, between midnight and 5 a.m. Saturday, to call the RCMP.

Anyone with information about the investigation is encouraged to contact the Yukon RCMP Major Crime Unit at 667-5555 in Whitehorse, at 536-5555 if calling from Watson Lake, or with the local prefix if calling from another community.
