Whitehorse firefighters spent much of Saturday on the scene of a blaze in Hillcrest that destroyed two sheds and saw two homes suffer damage to their exteriors.

A power pole was also damaged and had to be replaced.

Whitehorse Fire Department platoon chief Dave Dowie told the Star this morning firefighters were called at 7:05 a.m.

When they arrived at the Hillcrest Drive property, they found two garage/shed structures fully involved in flames.

“Fortunately, there were no injuries,” Dowie said, noting that the homeowner was inside the house at the time.

The 10 firefighters on the scene also had to deal with four propane tanks nearby that had to be vented.

A local propane company was able to properly remove the tanks and vent them in a safe area, Dowie said.

Firefighters remained on the scene with two pumpers, the rescue truck and a command vehicle until early afternoon, being back in service at 2:07 p.m.

A number of area residents lost power for much of the day as ATCO Electric Yukon had to replace the damaged power pole. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
