Government questioned on students’ return to classes
The Yukon government’s sudden decision to send local high school students back to full-time classes in April was the source of some intense debate Wednesday in the legislature.
The Yukon government’s sudden decision to send local high school students back to full-time classes in April was the source of some intense debate Wednesday in the legislature.
During question period, the government and Premier Sandy Silver were grilled on the decision by Yukon Party MLAs.
Scott Kent, the education critic for the YP, was particularly pointed in his questions.
“As we have said, A Path Forward, which the Liberals released just five days ago, says that, in order to get students back to full-time class in person in Whitehorse, we need to meet a criteria of — and I’ll quote again: ‘High overall vaccination rate for the entire Yukon population.’
“We and so many other Yukoners are just wondering what exactly this means. What number is considered a high overall vaccination rate? The premier couldn’t answer that question (Tuesday).”
The government announced this week that Grades 10-12 students in Whitehorse can go back to full-time classes next month. Since the fall of 2020, they have been doing half their learning online.
“The government must be confident that they will reach a high overall vaccination rate by that time frame,” said Kent. “What is that number that they are trying to reach by next month?”
Kent pressed Silver to explain what had changed in the five days between the release of the modified version of A Path Forward and Wednesday, when the government announced the planned return to class.
He also noted the Pfizer vaccine, which is not being used in any of the territories, has been approved to be used for ages 16 and older.
The Moderna vaccine, which has been used exclusively so far, can only be given to people aged 18 and more.
Kent noted that if the Pfizer vaccine was available, some of the students returning to school would be eligible to be immunized.
“I hate to correct the member opposite, but it wasn’t us, as a government, who said that we would say no to Pfizer,” Silver responded.
“We said that we would absolutely take on any vaccination. We actually even said that we do have the capacity and the refrigeration to do that in Whitehorse.
“We do know that the medical community nationally — I guess that doesn’t matter to the members opposite — said that the most important thing is that it’s hard to transport this vaccine; it’s very fragile,” the premier added.
“However, we never said that we wouldn’t accept Pfizer.”
Official Opposition Leader Stacey Hassard also questioned Silver on the issue.
“So, the Path Forward documents that the Liberals released just five days ago state that, in order to return high school students to full-time, in-person classes, the children must be eligible for the vaccine.
“(Wednesday) morning, the government announced that students will return to full-time, in-person classes next month,” Hassard said.
“While this is very welcome news, as far as we are aware, children are not currently eligible for the vaccine. So, five days ago, the government said that this was a requirement.
“Today, it appears not to be the case, so what changed in just five days for the government to change their criteria on this?” Hassard asked.
As for the rationale for sending students back to school in April when A Path Forward calls for that to happen in the fall, Silver said, “Again, we always follow the recommendations from the chief medical officer of health.
“We believed, at that time, that 75 per cent of the adult population would accept having a vaccination. We still, as the doctor (Brendan Hanley) has said again today — that’s still our goal.
“Now, is that the rate that’s needed to get herd immunity in these communities? The scientific community cannot answer that question today,” Silver said.
“Now, the members opposite can pin that on me as much as they want, but again, Mr. Speaker, the scientific community is cautiously optimistic that the trends that they’re seeing right now, not only in Yukon but in Canada — the rate of vaccination is good enough for us to continue on a path where we will see fewer restrictions.”
Education Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee told the Star in an interview early this afternoon the decision to change course came very rapidly.
On Tuesday, Hanley indicated he was open to discussing an earlier return to full-time studies than had been discussed. Talks on the issue continued through the evening and night before being finalized Wednesday morning.
Initial conversations were launched with schools and the Yukon Teachers’ Association, she said. All indicated they were excited about the opportunity.
McPhee then said the decision was made to announce the news on Wednesday morning during the weekly COVID-19 briefing instead or working out all of the logistics ahead of time.

gee folks I gotta say...South Park has done a fantastic job of illustrating the absolute lunacy of our cultures, our politics, our outta control teachers unions.
Or...we have slid into a parody of ourselves?
Using scripts from (duh) Orwell's 1984, Idiocrasy, completely fabricated mainstream media, some Walt Disney, Animal Farm, PC Crusader talking points, we have reset our moral compass to corrupt Vs. reason & logic. Clearly!
Personally I have had it with self proclaimed gawds of teachers, their unions, the "subject" matter our children DO GET indoctrinated with. When teachers, full time or part time drama teachers morph into political blowholes (as it is a super fine red line) ...it tends to breed caustic commi values in our petri dish of subjects that used to be citizens.

We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teacher, leave them kids alone " ...Roger Waters effin musical genius

Desperate and devoid of substance. Don't we want the kids back in school?
If there wasn't an announcement the kids may go back soon, the question would be ' why aren't the kids going back?'.
Politics is hollow and the YP has that on full display.
I want the ball.....

So for half of the year, the Yukon Party was screeching: "Get the kids back in full time NOW!! What are you waiting for!? This is doing so much damage to our youth!! They can't wait any longer!"
Now the government says "Yeah ok, it seems safe enough now so they should go back in a few weeks time"
Now the Yukon Party is screaming "OMG how dare you get them back in full time so quickly!! This is too quick and they need more time to plan for their return!! You also changed your plan to get them back in sooner, what the heck is going on!?"
So basically there is nothing the Government could have done to appease Scott Kent and Currie Dixon. The Yukon Party decided they were going to be outraged no matter what and that's manufactured outrage.
No wonder so many people have no time for politics. It's just a silly opera at the end of the day.

Everybody is saying the same thing; this government is doing this because they are calling an election. There's been no reason to keep the grades 10-12 out of school and while I want grades 10-12 back full time, this was not the way to do it. Gonna be a nightmare for administrators to organize full time classes for everybody when there is a set schedule now. Should have just done this for next school year. Also, stop trying to get rid of IEP's, and move kids back to the their schools (Wood St programs, grade 8's to FH).

No need to panic on Mar 11, 2021 at 3:59 pm
Hey everybody, calm down. BC has had students in school full time since September 2020. My daughter goes to highschool there. There is no threat to teachers or the public considering where Yukon is at regarding vaccinated percentage of population and case counts (zero). Highschool students need to get back to school full time. They are suffering in many ways. I feel very bad for the students here in Yukon.

Patti Eyre: The YP are only trying to get some answers for the people of the Yukon. But, as always, Liberals and NDP like to hide decisions from the public. I too would like to know why and what caused the Lib gov to change their minds on sending High School kids back to school after the spring break. And I'm sure a YP government wouldn't have kept them out this long. So, what did change the Premier's mind?

Linking vaccines to Herd immunity is a serious change in definitions on Mar 11, 2021 at 2:56 pm
You can mark this day.
From now on herd immunity (even via cdc) has changed the definition to link directly to vaccines. Now we're slipping this language into government. Eventually the definition and understanding will only mean that vaccines are required for immunity. This has never been the case. 1984 meets Animal Farm. Slowly the definitions slip and your freedom goes with it.

Poor Scott Kent, hard to believe he was once Minister of Education. A Path Forward is a document, as such it cannot speak and cannot say anything. It “reads” however. It’s a pretty simple concept but one that eludes Scotty K!
