The body of Old Crow elder Freddy Frost was found Friday after a search that lasted more than a week.

The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation made the grim and unwelcome announcement late Friday afternoon.

“Elder Freddy Frost was found this afternoon in the vicinity of Old Crow,” the First Nation said.

“After hearing the news, the whole community assembled at the community hall, then walked together behind the truck as we brought Freddy to St. Luke’s Church.”

On social media, the post stated, “A family member expressed gratitude and thanked everyone for working closely together for these past days as we searched for Freddy.”

Frost was reported missing Oct. 7 after he left Old Crow on his ATV, towing a trailer and 
bound for Crow Mountain.

At times, more than 50 people were involved in the ground and helicopter search, with some coming from as far away as the Northwest Territories.

A funeral service for Frost, 78, will be held tomorrow at St. Luke’s Church, followed by a community feast at 5 p.m.

Air North has stepped up to offer discounted flights to Old Crow today and back to Whitehorse on Wednesday.

Facebook was flooded with condolences and memories of Frost, a venerated elder in the community.

Stephen Mills wrote, “He is an amazing man, and I am so happy for the times I spent with him. My condolences to all family. Let’s honour him. Take care on your journey.”

Jane Park added, “I am so sorry to hear this. Freddy was a great man. Condolences to the entire community and to his family and loved ones.”

Gerry Kisoun of Inuvik said, “Sending prayers of condolences to the family and friends of Freddy Frost, a man of the land, a very good man. I salute your service Freddy.”

Ray Highway wrote, “My sincere condolences to the Frost family. His journey now begins to the spirit world. He leaves a lot of broken hearts but his memories will mend the community’s sorrow. Prayers to you all.”

Peter Gibson said, “Rest in peace Freddy. You definitely lived a good life on your own terms. I’m so sorry I didn’t make it for coffee when you called looking for me. Keep the pot brewing and we’ll do it in the next round.”
