The COVID-19 outbreak has taken another Yukoner’s life and continues to expand in the territory.
REVISED - The COVID-19 outbreak has taken another Yukoner’s life and continues to expand in the territory.
Dr. Brendan Hanley, the Yukon’s chief medical officer of health, confirmed Wednesday afternoon the outbreak has claimed the life of a fourth Yukoner.
His office does not provide details about deaths from the virus.
Hanley also reported 18 new cases of COVID-19 late Thursday afternoon. This brings the active case count to 107.
Since June 4, all of the variant testing results received to date are positive for the Gamma variant.
The total case count is now 242.
Investigation and contact tracing are underway to verify where cases are in Yukon.
“We know that COVID-19 is hitting Yukoners of every age, from one year to 90 years,” Hanley said in the announcement.
“We are working as hard as we can to provide advice to individuals on how they need to respond to a possible or known exposure to COVID-19.
“I understand that people are concerned, especially parents of young ones, when there is what appears to be a delay in notification.
“What is important to remember is that very young children do not get as ill as older folks. And, we need time to work through who are contacts and who are not.
“It is still just as important that people stay home if ill, get tested if they have symptoms and get vaccinated.”
Hanley was referring to a case of COVID in a toddler at a daycare in Whitehorse.
Several parents and relatives of children attending the facility have spoken to local media outlets questioning the lengthy delays in the government notifying them of the youngster’s illness.
The grandmother of a child who attends the daycare, who asked that her name not be published, was outraged by lack of timely notification to families.
She told the Star this morning a child who attends the daycare was diagnosed as a positive case last Saturday.
Her grandchild’s parents were not informed in a timely manner, she said.
There still has been no formal order to lock down the daycare.
“That order has to come from the government,” she noted.
After six days, her family and others were finally being notified, she said.
She was told some people brought their children to the daycare on Tuesday – because no one from the government’s contact tracers had been in touch with families.
Most of the work of notifying families had been done informally on a person-to-person basis, the woman said.
“The people have been doing the work, not the contact tracers,” she said.
With thousands of people working for the Yukon government, she wonders why a few couldn’t be temporarily reassigned to contact tracing and notification duties during urgent periods like this one.
The Star’s requests for comment on the families’ concerns from the Department of Health and Social Services were not responded to by press time this afternoon.
Meanwhile, 53 individuals in the most recent outbreak have recovered.
“COVID-19 is being widely transmitted throughout Yukon, primarily affecting unvaccinated people and is now present in most Yukon communities,” a news release stated.
“Eleven of 14 communities are home to COVID-19 positive people.”
“COVID-19 is hitting unvaccinated Yukoners hard,” Hanley said.
“We expect the trend of daily cases to continue for a few weeks, and we may see additional clusters and smaller outbreaks.
“Given the heartbreaking news of yet another death, it is more important than ever that people stay home if ill, get tested if they have symptoms and get vaccinated.”
Most of the people with COVID-19 infections are unvaccinated.
However, 12 people with full vaccinations have also been confirmed with the virus.
Meanwhile, Hanley’s office is reviewing its longstanding policy of declining to identify Yukon communities hit by the virus.
In recent weeks, several mayors and First Nations chiefs have made social media statements freely alerting Yukoners to COVID’s presence in their communities.
Doris Bill, the chief of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation, said at Wednesday’s weekly COVID briefing that disclosing the virus’s presence in a community is beneficial because it alerts residents to take as many precautions as possible to avoid contracting it.

Outrageous how Whitehorse is being a part of the "Yukon Communities"( i.e AYC membership), only when it suits them. And A.Y.C. accepts them as a "community" just because Whitehorse membership fee is sky high and funds the association.
The communities outside Whitehorse are made up of real people, with real feelings and concerns. Enough with this favoritism already. Why aren't the membership (A.Y.C.) requesting a total disclosure Yukon wide?

Why does Hanley not name communities that have COVID, but does name Whitehorse? Does anyone know the rationale there?

Hanley says, "COVID-19 is hitting unvaccinated Yukoners hard."
But where are the mass hospitalizations, ICU admissions, deaths?
What does Hanley mean by "hitting hard"? Or, is he just playing fast and loose again?
Re: the person that died . . . was that "from COVID" or "with COVID"? Was that person vaccinated? Inquiring minds want to know.

Another 90 year old died during the Age of Covid and we're scared man, we're all so scared. But the government will make it all better. First they need to lock us all up so we don't get into any trouble. Then when we're all vaccinated we'll still need to be locked up because we're scared that the vaccine doesn't work! Me - I'm scared of the government....

Yukon reported a "COVID-19 associated" death [on April 26th], the second for the territory so far in the pandemic.... Yukon's chief medical officer said the person's death was caused by "unrelated health conditions."
"The person contracted COVID-19 near the time of death and is therefore considered a COVID-19 associated death,"... A Health department spokesperson says the person was not in Yukon when they died, and did not contract COVID-19 in the territory. The Health department says COVID-19 may have contributed to the deceased person's demise, but the infection is not considered to be the cause of death. The deceased was a resident of rural Yukon.
Yukon reported its first COVID-19-related death in October. That person was an "older" resident of Watson Lake who had "significant underlying medical conditions," officials said at this time.

It's very telling that the govt is not equally forthcoming about the two recent "Yukoner... deaths from the virus." Instead the govt continues to ramp-up the fear-porn and treat us like mushrooms, ie. kept in the dark and fed BS.
A responsible govt would provide complete and accurate information instead of edited snippets designed to instill fear and coerce people into taking experimental drug shots without publicly disclosing the potential negative side effects and adverse reactions from those injections.

All in all.. the government, Silver and Hanley have not performed in a responsible manner to a large health issue: covid. Lack of information is a contribution to fear mongering from the health department and happily supported by the Liberal government. A day care and people were not informed. Jeez..children? babies? Shame on you Hanley. I do not understand the Hanley need for secrecy. I think Band leaders, Mayors, are right to just go around him and make the announcements. What is to be gained by keeping people in the dark?
Rest in Peace to those that have left us.. from suicide, from OD, from old age, from stroke, from heart attacks, from kidney failure.. and from covid.

So Hanley, stop with the unvaccinated thing. You report that most were unvaccinated, well as you reported most of these are young people who have only recently been able to get the shot and virtually none have yet been able to get the second shot. So of course they are unvaccinated by your standard as apparently a single shot. This is very disingenuous, and misleading. There were also some under 12 that are still not allowed at all.
So while you are at it why don't you announce that all that have died were in fact double vaccinated, or would that not meet your messaging agenda?
