Nicole Bauberger’s January installation is made almost entirely of excess plastic bike reflectors diverted from the waste stream.

The main piece in Fish and Fire evokes an abstracted forest fire using just white and orange reflectors.

Reflector-based fish will swim through the rest of the gallery space.

Some of these fish were fabricated with help from Nakai Theatre summer students during the summer of 2022.

The fish have swum through the Dalton Trail Trail Gallery behind Hillcrest for a year before appearing at Theatre in the Bush in September 2023, along with the fire piece, which Bauberger brought into being especially for Theatre in the Bush. This will be their first gallery appearance.

If you didn’t win the ticket lottery for Theatre in the Bush, this is your chance to see at least part of that show.

Bauberger is open to discussing making fish like this with you and your friends for installation at a space of your choosing, as a commission.

The reflectors were gathered for Bauberger at the Cadence Cycle bike shop.

This work is partly inspired by Bauberger’s residencies at Raven Recycling and the concepts she has engaged with there.

Her lantern workshop for Raven ReCentre’s Solstice Parade also featured bike reflectors.

Fire and Fish will glint at Northern Front Studio’s Free Space from today until Jan. 26. Fans can join Bauberger for a closing party at 7 p.m. Jan. 26.

Also, watch for bike reflectors on the 14-foot monsters as part of her work at the (s)hiver installation in Dawson City during the first weekend of February.

With local artist Janet Patterson, Bauberger co-curated Yukon Artists At Work’s 20th anniversary exhibition at the Yukon Arts Centre, and the pair are offering an array of tours and events this month.
