Mayor Laura Cabott paid tribute to Austin at the start of council’s meeting on Monday.
Austin served four consecutive terms on council from 2000 to 2012, Cabott noted.
“Not many councillors have served that length of time,” she noted.
“Dave was always focused on hearing from the public, working with the community and administration to do his best to serve the community.
“He was a true public servant,” Cabott said before passing on council’s condolences to Austin’s family.
She said many residents who have been here a long time knew Austin, and were aware of his accomplishments.
Austin lived in Whitehorse for 47 years. He was 79 years old.

All the thumbs down on nice comments about a dead person. Really?
Politician's are fair targets. They chose to sit in the kitchen, and they just take the heat. But this person has passed on, and it's bad karma to be so disrespectful. People said something nice about him that you don't agree with.. Just scroll on by.

I dealt with Dave in the 1990’s when he served as the late Mickey Fisher’s executive assistant, and also in his capacity as a City Councillor. He was always straight forward to work with and a lot of fun to be with. Dave will be missed. My condolences to Elaine and family.

I agree with Juniper. Dave was a sweet guy. Patient, friendly, funny and always willing to help. I'll miss him.

One of the great things about serving in public life was the opportunity to work with dedicated public servants, despite their political orientation. Dave Austin was one of those, a tireless advocate for the City of Whitehorse.
