The Yukon’s COVID-19 outbreak continued to worsen over the long weekend.
The Yukon’s COVID-19 outbreak continued to worsen over the long weekend.
Government officials report that 117 active cases of the virus are now known.
Dr. Brendan Hanley, the Yukon’s chief medical officer of health, issued multiple updates over the weekend.
The most recent, issued Monday afternoon, stated 30 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been identified since Saturday afternoon.
“There are now 100 active cases in the territory,” the release stated.
Seventeen more cases were added this morning in an update from Pat Living, a spokesperson for Hanley.
“Since June 4, 2021, screening results received so far indicate all cases are positive for the Gamma (P.1) variant,” a statement said.
“That leaves Yukon’s total case count as 212. Fourteen cases have recovered. Twenty-three cases are in Whitehorse and seven in rural communities.
“One new hospitalization, while two previous cases remain in the hospital,” the update indicated.
“If you have symptoms that feel like a cold right now, you should consider that it is COVID-19. You should isolate immediately and arrange for a test,” Hanley said in a release.
“We expect to see many more cases as the virus moves through our unvaccinated population. To get through this, people must get tested when symptoms appear and stay home if at all unwell.
“Isolating people with symptoms, identifying contacts, and testing will bring us through this outbreak. Vaccination will prevent the next one.”
“COVID-19 is now widespread throughout Yukon, primarily affecting unvaccinated people and is now present in most Yukon communities,” the release stated.
“Exposure notices have been sent to additional schools. Staff and students have been advised to either self-isolate or self-monitor depending on exposure. Cases linked to the identified schools were infectious during the last days of school.”
The schools involved are:
• Kluane School in Destruction Bay;
• École Whitehorse Elementary School;
• J.V. Clark School in Mayo
• Holy Family Elementary School in Whitehorse;
• Takhini Elementary School in Whitehorse; and
• Grades 9 and 10 classes at Porter Creek Senior Secondary School.
The Star has obtained two letters from public health officials and the Department of Education over the weekend that were sent to parents.
“As an update to our letter from June 16, 2021, we are notifying you that an additional student with COVID-19 has been connected to Porter Creek Secondary School,” the letter said.
“Although school is now out for summer, we are issuing this notice because the students would have been in their infectious period during the last days of school.
“Under sections 11 and 17 of the Communicable Disease regulations of the Public Health and Safety Act, the Chief Medical Officer of Health for Yukon is directing:
“All students who attended the following classes at Porter Creek Secondary School on June 3rd, 4th, and 7th are to self-isolate and monitor for signs of COVID-19 until Monday, June 21, 2021.
• Grade 10 Food (Day 1, Block A & C, Mr. Susin)
• Grade 10 Careers (Day 1, Block B & D, Ms. Burgess)
• Grade 10 Social Studies (Day 2, Block A & C, Mr. Falkenberg)
• Grade 10 Science (Day 2, Block B & D, Mr. Comeau)
“All teachers and support staff: If you are fully vaccinated (2 doses received prior to May 21, 2021), please monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19
“If you are partially vaccinated (1 dose only) or unvaccinated please self-isolate and monitor for signs of COVID-19 until June 21, 2021.”
A second letter was addressed to parents of students at Elijah Smith Elementary School.
“As a precaution, we are notifying you that a positive COVID-19 test connected to a Grade 6 Elijah Smith Elementary School student was reported on Monday, June 14, 2021.
“Yukon Communicable Disease Control is directing: Grade 6 students: All students in the Grade 6 class are to self-isolate and monitor for signs of COVID-19 until Friday June 25, 2021.”
Hanley issued the following notice last Friday:
“Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) Dr. Brendan Hanley is directing Grade 12 students who attended the F.H. Collins prom event on Friday, June 11, to self-isolate until end of day on Friday, June 25, at 11:59 p.m.
“This direction is issued under his authority under Sections 11 and 17 of the Communicable Disease regulation under the Public Health and Safety Act.
“One of nine new confirmed cases of COVID-19 for today is a student at the school who attended the event. Everyone who attended the F.H. Collins Cap and Gown event on Thursday, June 10, are being asked to self-monitor only. Letters are being sent to students involved.
“In addition, under this same authority, Dr. Hanley is directing students in four Grade 9 classes at Porter Creek Senior Secondary to self-isolate until end of day on Friday, June 25. Letters are being sent to students in those classes.
“If students or their parents do not receive a letter by end of day Friday, June 18th, the student is not required to self-isolate.
“We have identified both these two Whitehorse high schools because of the sheer number of people who are affected,” Hanley said.
“We are seeing other school cases but are so far able to focus our contact tracing and advice to students and parents. Fortunately, we are not yet seeing evidence of transmission within the schools but rather young people acquiring COVID-19 in the community and then going to school. The fact that school is now over is also helping us,” Hanley said.
Meanwhile, with cases spreading into the communities, many of them are asking travellers to stay away – only a short time after the government introduced travel subsidies for Yukoners travelling within the territory this summer.

As we jump through each new 'variant' hoop, or new virus's, be prepared for another one to appear. The plague? THAT was a pandemic. Spanish flu? THAT was a pandemic. Covid? I don't know what the hell this is. Not a pandemic, but because it's attacking the elderly and people with pre existing conditions, it's something, and in this era, we don't let the weakest link die. I do not believe the Governments have handled this well..In fact, they know they didn't. But, it's not too late to put the train back on the tracks. Start with truth, and truth in information.
Those that are at risk, keep protection in place for them. Everyone else, set them free. Evidence is showing, right now...lockup doesn't work, masks don't work, isolation probably works but the side effects are horrendous. For the healthy out there.. choice. You want a mask? ok..you don't? ok.. you want to isolate? ok.. you don't? ok... This 'flu' like disease is too big. It's not going to be contained. But governments ARE going to keep us contained.
Countries that are poor..like India. The numbers break my heart. We didn't get hit in the US, Canada, as hard as other countries because, we have enough to eat, Vitamins for shortages, dental care, eye care, doctors. Along with vaccines, we could have sent food.

@ I said Pardon....
You mention the ‘chicken pox party’.
You’re sooooo nearsighted you can’t fathom that the party was to inflict the children because Chicken Pox for an adult is a much more serious.
Ironic, dontcha think?

I am almost the age you claim to be and yes I remember the measles, mumps, and chicken pox parties. It's funny you make reference to them as my Doctor and I had this discussion recently. He said to me "how did you get vaccinated for Chicken pox etc. ? " I said if my cousin came down with it my mom took us kids over to play so we would get it and be over it, he said "Exactly" Herd Immunity. And for the record, I am fully vaccinated for Covid19 only because I want to travel to a warm destination this winter and that's the only way Trudeau 2.0 will let it happen.

So I’ve done some research on shingles, and I won’t be changing my position. The Mayo clinic, for example, claims that those who’ve had chicken pox as children MAY develop shingles in mature adults. As you have disclosed, those in your age group are at risk if one’s immune system is weakened or compromised (any disease can take hold under these conditions). So, eating properly, exercise, supplementing, and a general positive attitude goes a long way in keeping disease at bay no matter what one’s age is.
However, medical science has also created a shingles vaccine (two in fact: zostavaz and shingrix) for those who cannot maintain immunity the natural way. The Chief medical officer of health has stated that if I take 2 doses of vaccine (one of each is ok as well),
I will be able to return to a normal life (international travel, sports events, bars and restaurants, etc. etc.)
All without itchy, scaly skin and a burning, blistering rash.
Ask your doctor before starting any treatment.......

I can't believe people actually believe some of these nutcase remarks.
Absolutely everyone eligible for the shots should be having them without delay.

To "I said pardon" - I'm in my 70's and no, I don't remember chicken pox parties. Strikes me as very poor parenting. I do remember my daughter getting chicken pox and being very ill. I'm not sure what benefit that "lifetime immunity" held, but we do now know that childhood chicken pox causes adult shingles. So perhaps you might want to revisit your position

So, it's pretty clear that the majority of "unvaccinated people" being hit in this outbreak are children and youth. It's too bad that Hanley, Silver and McPhee didn't have the foresight to get 12-17 vaccinated ASAP with Pfizer like health officials in the NWT did. The Yukon lagged almost a full calendar month behind the NWT in this regard.
There's no hiding from Covid, and we'll be living with it for the foreseeable future but this outbreak shows that the people at the top were once again asleep at the wheel.
We've essentially been getting lucky up until this point. Then with no foresight, they ease border restrictions on a timeline that probably matched up with some Deputy Minister's travel plans, but they forgot that large groups of youth who couldn't have been fully vaccinated would be gathering in the middle of June.

Those who wanted to get vaccinated already are. Those who don't want to get vaccinated will likely not change their minds, and will look for any reason to justify their decision. My sympathy is for those who want to get vaccinated and can't, because of health conditions, or because of age. Let's stop pointing fingers, and just get through this outbreak so that everyone can have a summer

Sounds like scare tactics to me. Can't help but feel like they label the unvaccinated as the "undesirables" .
Seems to be a pretty blatant abuse of power.

It’s worth mentioning that the CDC’s own numbers have clearly indicated that the under-21 population has a statistically zero chance of being seriously harmed by a coronavirus, especially COVID and its variants.
Remember the chicken pox party, when all the neighbourhood kids would go to the spotted kids house and get infected? A young, strong immune system would fight off the pox, and get lifelong immunity at the same time. Looks like there were a few COVID parties now, wasn’t there.....
Any teens that were allegedly exposed to COVID at these “gatherings” are going to fully recover and achieve immunity the natural, old fashioned way.
With Hanley’s push to vaccinate the over-12 age group (and extend further the federal subsidization of his CMO office), an “outbreak” in this age group seems rather, um, convenient, doesn’t it.....
In Hanley’s mind (as per his Johns Hopkins training), the vaccine is the hammer, and the entire Yukon population are nothing but nails.

Does WHO recommend COVID-19 vaccines for children under 16?
The vaccine has only been tested in children above 16 years of age. Therefore, at this time, WHO does not recommend vaccination of children below 16 years of age, even if they belong to a high-risk group.Apr. 20, 2021 because 17 is suddenly such a huge difference.

How did the variant get here? Considering the policy changed on May 24th to allow vaccinated to travel freely in the Yukon with no self isolation period.
Keep in mind the unvaccinated were/are PEOPLE THAT COULDN'T GET VACCINATED. Youth.
So if your vaccinations were only offered to Youth June 1st, that meant an entire week+ of people carrying the virus around and visiting relatives.

So if the majority of cases are involving non-vaccinated people (highest we've seen so far), and the number of hospital cases has not increased....hmmm, better hurry up and get the vaccine so someone gets a bonus check or something. FYI, vaccinated people's attitude and lack of respect for safety protocols (feeling bullet proof) scares me more than anything else.
