City asked to reactivate anti-racism committee
City council has been asked to reactivate the Advisory Committee on Racism and Discrimination.
City council has been asked to reactivate the Advisory Committee on Racism and Discrimination.
Whitehorse resident Mike Gladish, a former city councillor, made the request at last Monday night’s council meeting.
“Whitehorse is not immune to hateful acts, discrimination, or public policies that may be based in a racist history,” he said.
Gladish acknowledged the anti-racism resolution that the city councils of Whitehorse and Dawson City are planning to present May 8 to the annual general meeting of the Association of Yukon Communities(AYC).
The resolution commits the association to provide anti-racism training on an annual basis.
The resolution demonstrates a desire to act against racist and hateful behaviour, Gladish said.
He said he was told last year a request to reactivate the committee would have to be made directly to city council.
“I am here to make that request,” Gladish said.
“I know that a group of citizens, including members of the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition, former advisory committee members and other Whitehorse citizens are ready and willing to sit on a reactivated committee.”
He said in keeping with the phase “nothing about us, without us,” the committee needs to include concerned citizens who represent racialized groups of people who are marginalized due to social status or sexual identity.
“There are people waiting to take part on an advisory committee so that no decisions will be made about them, without them,” he said.
“They would like to help you make a more inclusive community.”
Gladish said reactivating the committee is an opportunity to engage with citizens who are eager to share their knowledge and experiences.
“It’s an opportunity to act on the AYC resolution,” he said. “And it’s an opportunity to show that the City of Whitehorse is serious about being anti-racist.”
Gladish said reactivating the committee would ensure it’s ready to advise the new city council to be elected in October.
The committee could collaborate with other communities to ensure the resolution is meaningful and not just a promise, he said.
Gladish urged council to bring forward a resolution next month to reactivate the committee. He noted it was formed in 2013 but was “temporarily suspended” in 2017.
Just last month, said Gladish, 150 residents attended a memorial vigil in Whitehorse for the eight people killed in the Atlanta mass shooting on March 16. Six of the victims were Asian women.
The vigil was a demonstration against the disturbing increase in crimes against people of Asian ancestry, he said.
Gladish said one of the organizers of the March 27 vigil told the crowd there were close to 1,000 anti-Asian hate crimes reported across Canada since March 17, including insults, death threats and spitting.
The city is not currently a member of the national Canadian Coalition for inclusive Municipalities, city manager Linda Rapp pointed out when asked by Coun. Steve Roddick.
Council could bring forward a resolution to join the coalition, she said.

I agree with James Dandy. If you have the expertise and knowledge to bid on a contract with the Government - why should the tables be turned to favor First Nations? That is not fair - it racism against anyone who is not First Nation.

Calling people racist is the greatest political strategy ever invented.

Are there any racism resources for people who are disgusted and embarrassed by carpet-baggers who create tsunami of useless laws which decimate businesses and destroy creativity and create animosity among the people in the name of inclusiveness and equality and sustainability whilst fattening themselves all the while?

S: Let's see... How can we make this new law seem like it's coming from public demand so we do not get the flak for it ourselves...
J: Hey, I know, let's just say the "public" requested it!
And they all had a big laugh and went home for the day.

The only systemic racism in Yukon is the Liberals First Nation contract procurement policy. That is plain discrimination anyway you view it.

Having read the article, I just don't see what this committee could accomplish. I agree with the person who said that, if reactivated, the committee should have clear and measure able outcomes established. And let's try to be grown ups - labelling people as racist just because they disagree is just so unproductive and childish.

Nathan Living: So, many of us here would just like to know from what race is all the racism coming from. Could/would you like to shed some light on this? I think that is a fair question. After all, thousands, possibly millions of tax dollars are going into this project. And do you think this will be money well spent?

Thank you Mr Gladish for having the courage to bring this up, despite all the haters out there! This isn’t about the asinine hammer and nail argument: this is about human dignity, of which we are all entitled. And cancel culture has been around a long long time, look at the holocaust and genocide that took place when the Europeans came to North American and destroyed all those beautiful people and cultures! Cancelled them. To death. It starts there. I’m willing to own up and say I probably have ancestry back to those immigrants at the time, but today I know better, please help us find dignity in everyone!

Racists are obsessed with racism.
JJ is correct: When your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Subjected to Racism in Yukon on Apr 27, 2021 at 1:25 pm
As someone who has been subjected to all forms of racism in the Yukon, I applaud this action by the COW. It is easy to say there is no racism in Yukon when you have never been subjected to it, not so easy when it is a almost daily occurrence.
A good place for this committee to look, would be the comments section on this website.

I support this committee.
There is a lot of racism in Whitehorse, Why not lay it on the table and try and deal with the situation.
City staff often consult with First Nation governments as an afterthought, is that a form of racism?

Another "to be seen to be doing" awareness project. These are popping up like mushrooms with little to no value at the end of the day. Is there an action plan? Something tangible or just more people sitting around holding hands and grinding on how bad it is?
Here is a simple test before you spend too much time and budget: How will you MEASURE success? What will indicate your work is having positive results?
Don't get me wrong I am hopeful for a solution to this age old problem, but rather than focusing on race and what makes us all different- why not put your time and effort into making us all equal? I think you may find that not all desire to be equal as they are content in their differences especially if there is a benefit for them of some kind. Best of luck in your work.

Pierre. Same as when the Black Lives Matter and George Floyd/Derik Chauvin thing was happening last year, some folks felt it necessary to put up signs and protest demonstrations in support of them. Sometimes lately, I wonder why I even came up to the Yukon.

Question: Who/what race has to take this anti-racism training? Yesterday, for no reason I can think of, a middle aged FN male, delivered a well aimed loogie at my car door while knowing I was watching. I'm 80. Does that classify as racism? Just asking.

Mr. Facts: So, true. Surprised that hasn't happened yet, I think it would fall under "cancel culture". But, then, what color would it be changed to?

I'm sorry but this is nonsense. Someone in Atlanta gets shot and we need to have a committee to fight anti racism here in the Yukon. It's funny how people of all ethnic diversity come to the Yukon, take jobs and then cry racism. What a joke. A person coming to Canada must be willing to become Canadian, not bring their racist attitude with them. How about trying to get along with people and stop being a victim of yourself? Its absurd to think that Yukon residents hold any racist opinion about anyone. This is the most beautiful part of Canada, stop trying to change our way of life to suit yours. You came here voluntarily - you can leave voluntarily or you can become a Yukoner which to me is the greatest way of life on this planet. Try gratitude and less attitude you might find people here quite accepting.

Beyond silly now.. people need to grow a thicker skin and move on, hatred is world wide, in EVERY COUNTRY, against every colour, against every race.. let's stop pretending its only whites that are racist like we're consistently told by media..

When you are a hammer..all you see is nails. If you are a racist..by God, you see a racist in every person. If you hate, everyone hates. If you are a liar, you don't believe anyone, they are all liars.. like you, if you steal, you guard your stuff, lest someone steal it from you. All of your committees? They aren't going to change who someone is. There is already legislation in place to protect people against blatant racism; that is, decisions made on the basis of color, religions, gender, ethnicity, use those. Is racism a City mandate? If they want employee's to take courses, shouldn't they go to the Yukon U. for courses offered across the territory? If someone thinks another is taking some action against them, they report it to HR, or many, many, many go to Human Rights. I don't see the need in the City budget for more employee's and another useless committee.

So an incident in Atlanta means Whitehorse should set up a committee to cope with hateful acts that occur somewhere else. Sure set up a committee on your own dime and own office space and buy a column each week in the local rags and be done with it.

Asian hate on Apr 26, 2021 at 2:19 pm
So will the Asian community publicly speak out against Muslim concentration camps?
https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/other/solar-panels-from-china-produced-in-concentration-camp-conditions-by-muslim-ethnic-minority/ar-BB1fVAr1
I understand that Asian hate isn't a "positive" HOWEVER "hate" in general isn't positive. The actions of China against Canada (including the 2 Michaels) may feed into the narrative. And the entire Wuhan flu.
