Excitement broke out Sunday at the Beaver Creek border crossing after a suspicious package was reported to the RCMP.

The Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) advised police that a possible unidentified explosive was left at the port of entry building.

“The unidentified object had been left by an individual who had attempted to enter Canada from Alaska, but who was ultimately denied entry and confirmed to have returned to the United States,” police said.

CBSA closed the Beaver Creek building and removed all staff.

The United States port of entry at Alcan was also closed by U.S. authorities.

As a result of the closure of border crossings, the Alaska Highway was closed to westbound traffic at Beaver Creek.

The Yukon RCMP Federal Investigative Unit (FIU) and the Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) attended the Beaver Creek port of entry to investigate the incident.

EDU personnel determined that the object was not an explosive.

“The investigation led by M Division FIU is ongoing, so no further details are being released,” police said.

“Yukon RCMP would like to thank members of the travelling public for their patience and understanding as the event unfolded.”
